We going to disrespect him and all of UF by blowing y'all out that day and having no one left in the stadium to see the tribute.

He was such a hero and person admired by UF that they paid him minimum wage to cut grass.
Revisionist History, is not real history. We will respect him as much as you did, which is not at all.

My guess is Tom would want his music to speak for itself and be left alone to rest in peace.
I understand he is from Gainesville and is obviously very popular. But this just reeks of a money grab, especially when Gata announced the inaugural "Tom Petty Day" with co-branded merchandise. Gata's intentions are clear - capitalize on the tenuous, at best, relationship between Tom Petty and Gata for capital gain.
Furthermore, Gata's attempt to create a "tradition" by forcing fans to waive their lighted phones to "I Won't Back Down" is tacky. It's the exact opposite of what Tom Petty would've wanted - something genuine and meaningful. Sure, he loved it when fans sang along at his concerts, but he never suggested they do so. The last time I checked, traditions in this conference arise organically, unless you're Aggie.
In sum, I am ashamed of Gata. They are dishonoring a great musician's legacy.
EDIT: Apparently Gata and the Petty Estate are donating all proceeds from the merchandise to local charities, which is a great move. I assumed they weren't and made an arse out of me.

lso… I happen to know his favorite city in the US was Houston. He said it a few times when I saw him in concert at the Summit. A friend of mine saw him in St. Louis and he said St. Louis was one of his favorite cities to visit. By my count Gainesville not even in top 2!!!
Every once in a blue moon an ag makes me laugh due to a well crafted post. Kudos!

I think all UF has to do is have better communication with LSU before the event. Make it clear what they're planning and when they will do it. That was the issue last time, if I recall. They always seem to leave LSU in the dark until the last minute, and then get upset about it.

Urban legend in Cenla is that he attended ASH for a year and supposedly there’s a pic in the yearbook. Maybe Ellick can claim him too

Tom Petty sucked. His voice was annoying.

LSU's disrespect turned a one time tribute into one of the coolest traditions in college football.
Thanks LSU!

This is a weird melt. The money is being raised for the Tom Petty Estate to donate to local causes.

In anticipation of 'Tom Petty Day,' the university, in partnership with the Tom Petty Estate, will launch a capsule collection that celebrates the late singer and his connection to the university and his hometown.
The Tom Petty Estate is donating its full proceeds from the sales of Tom Petty Day X Florida Collection merchandise to give back to underserved communities in Gainesville, and Kids Count and Family Promise have been designated as the recipients this year. Kids Count supports education and early childhood interventions with an emphasis on literacy, while Family Promise works to bring families out of homelessness by providing housing and employment resources.

How did LSU ever disrespect him?
When Tom Petty died, LSU was Florida’s next home game opponent. They planned a Tom Petty tribute after the 3Q. LSU’s band was informed of this, and LSU’s band said we play this song as soon as the 3Q ends and it lasts this long. UF admin said “no problem, play your song, we’ll start the tribute as soon as you finish.”
When the big moment came, LSU’s band was playing its usual song at the end of the 3Q but someone in the UF pressbox started the Tom Petty tribute to early. In true rock n roll fashion, LSU’s marching band refused to yield. What followed was some epic video caught and shared on twitter of many toothless, methhead, jort wearing Florida fans yelling at the LSU band while many in the stadium booed LSU’s band.
Full video, but there is better footage from the LSU side

I hope we don't back down and do the same thing we did five years ago on our way to victory.
