Why are you singling out Auburn? That is also true for Clemson, USC, Alabama, Ole Miss, Miss State and probably a slew of other schools. Georgia is the 2nd most populated state in the (original) SEC footprint. All of your high school grads can't go to UGA or GT. The schools aren't big enough.

Can they leverage that into a solid degree and solid career? Of course they can. But they still couldn't get into UGA.

I'm going to let you in on a little secret. After your first entry level job making $50-60k/year, employers don't give a damn where you went to college. And most entry level employers don't care either if you didn't major in something super specialized or specific to the job. Your poly sci degree at UGA doesn't give you a leg up on the Auburn kid with the same degree just because UGA may be more difficult to get into. The shite-posting about what different state schools are ranked is always hilarious for me to read. No one in the real world cares.

Probably because Georgia and Auburn play this week and this thread started as a trash talking game week thread

If you asked college grads in the region to pick between Atlanta and Birmingham, Atlanta would win in a landslide. It'd probably be 80-20.

That said, I think Birmingham is undervalued and I could certainly make an argument for living there over Atlanta. It offers a nice quality of life, at least in a few places.

Maybe, but we can thank Georgia for Biden.
Nope; you can thank the vote counters from the hood in the ATL and the dominion voting machines for that. BTW, Georgia and the ATL are two different things, and in these days that's a good thing.

Sure, because Atlanta is a fun place to be for a single kid right out of college. As people get older and priorities change, living in a big city like Atlanta isn't high on everyone's list. I wanted no part of it after I was done with grad school, and have since moved away from Nashville as well to the burbs and haven't regretted it for one minute.

With no real beliefs, no real deep care for the state and just vassals for whatever Trump told them.

The days of Johnny and Sam Nunn are long gone. I will say, I didn't vote for either and won't because of the nature of national politics in the Senate/House and how each party is BASICALLY just a monolith.........but both Warnock and even little boy Osoff have done about as good a job of staying under the radar and doing enough bipartisan stuff as you could hope for. Part of it is self preservation, but I've read and heard a lot of really good stuff about Osoff's office and how responsive they've been to everybody (South Georgia republican mayors for example). That's doing your job.

Yep - and has improved in the last decadeish. It really is one of those under the radar middle sized cities (Chattanooga is another).

Lots of them in the South, to be honest. And most of them would rather stay under the radar to avoid the hordes escaping other parts of the country

Yes. But the reality is Atlanta would probably win by a large margin in most age brackets. I don't say that to claim Birmingham sucks - my point is Birmingham is undervalued and most people turn up their nose at it but haven't spent any time there. They just know it's a city without a lot of widely-discussed features in a small state that most perceive as backwards.

Anyway, this is about the idea that people want Birmingham over Atlanta because of perceived crime issues in Atlanta. I just don't think that's a thing outside very small anecdotal batches of evidence.

What do you have other than your anecdote?

Again, kids aren’t applying to UGA, not getting in, and deciding to shell out $200k for Auburn for the college experience.
A lot more going to places like Ole Miss or Miss State.
A lot of the metro Atlanta kids going to Auburn (like mine does) are there because their parents are alumni

I'm not talking about all Auburn graduates, I'm talking about the Georgia high school kids that couldn't get into UGA so they went to Auburn, then come back to ATL area when they graduate. Does that fit the description of the three people you know? If so, I'm right. If not, then your point is irrelevant to my point.

I would take Auburn schools over 98% of Atlanta metro schools

Correct - and that's a double edged sword. We have other parents we are around that came here from Michigan or New York who are lovely people, work hard, add a ton to the community. Then we have others from those same areas who just basically talk as if they are here on a vacation and how shitty it is and how Ohio State is awesome that I wish would just move back.

Good and bad, but those people would never move to Birmingham while they do move to Atlanta (which is, like I said, some good and some bad).
