Stiener was infuriating me

Watching him blindly chase the rbs out into the flats as the qb ran behind him for big gains was sickening. He did this multiple times during critical points of the game. One time he chased him all the way out of bounds while Daniels ran right behind him for a 15 yard gain. Stiener never once turned around to acknowledge where the ball was.
At first I said damn he dumb but he kept doing it and that's when I realized he was obviously coached to do this. frick where the ball is going just turn your back to it and chase the rb.

Combine that with not wrapping up in the backfield and yeah. He had an awful night.

Steiner was doing what the coaches told him to do on those plays. Turning your back to the ball is not natural for a run first interior linebacker. He was told to do that in practice.

Surely coaches aren’t teaching that. That’s against football 101. We need to stop trying to reinvent the wheel.
The ball carrier is always the immediate threat and Steiner should’ve been taught to take care of the immediate threat first.

He’s a back up that has to start. Great for him, but TWill didn’t recruit well at the end and Harsin didn’t bring in any portal help. It’s killing us!

Is Tisdol even on the team anymore? Wasn't he a pretty good prospect out of HS?
Something is going on with the LBer group in their coaching. It's not like we are completely devoid of talent at the position. There are several 4 star kids in the room.

Yea I can promise you he was coached to do that. Same thing where you see a LB occasionally crush a qb carrying out a boot fake or something. Sometimes guys are coached out of specific sets to ignore all else because they've popped a big play off of it several times.

Correct that was Steiners man covering the TE and not the QB. Someone else was supposed to take the QB.

But to turn his back to the play and completely ignore the ball was driving me crazy. Happened at least 3 times. And it wasn't like the RB or TE was streaking downfield with him chasing they were in the flats where all the action is where you have to keep an eye on the ball.

I refuse to believe coaches are telling our players to take the pitch man, not the ball carrier.

You play your responsibility doing otherwise breaks down being gap sound or zone sound in coverage.
Steiner had what 14 or 15 tackles. I think we are looking at the wrong linebacker and placing blame.
I love Owen but it’s time to use him as a backup at OLB he isn’t an MLB

I thought Steiner played well with a few exceptions. Pappoe is the guy who surprised me. He missed tackles, was out of position multiple times, and made some real bonehead plays for a senior leader.

That has been Pappoe his entire career. He seriously needs to drop about 15 lbs and try to play an in box safety role at the next level if he can. Specialist safety and special teams and he can make a solid living for 4-6 years

Yeah but are coaches seriously telling players these days to go after the pitch man not the ball carrier based on assignment? That was never taught when I was in HS. It was all about the first guy making the ball carrier pay if he pitches the ball. The next guy cleans up the pitch guy.
As for Steiner, he has sucked too. Him and Cam Riley had been grading lower than Pappoe prior to last game. Pappoe had been the highest graded linebacker around 60… Steiner got a bad rap last game because of the announcers but he was already on the shite list

Coaches have always taught to take their responsibility on defense. If your guy is the pitch guy you take him. Regardless of what the QB does that’s someone else’s responsibility.
It’s not like youth basketball where you stop the ball first on a fast break. Each guy on an “option” type play which this was has a responsibility. Steiner’s guy was the pitch guy in the flat. Who was supposed to take the QB I don’t know because on 3 plays no one came into the screen on tv to see. Just like defending the triple option, someone has the dive, another the QB, and another the pitch. Anyone that doesn’t take their guy results in a huge play. Just like a DB in man on man coverage if a QG is scrambling around it’s your job to stay with the WR not come off.

That’s inherently stupid then and it made Steiner look like a God damn fool and even the announcers couldn’t tell you what the hell Steiner was doing.
If the guy that is responsible for the ball carrier gets tripped or blocked someone else has to take care of the ball carrier. It’s team defense. Don’t just let the ball carrier roam down the field until the guy that’s responsible finally catches up.
