I always thought that on an option play that the LB/DE's responsibility is the man with the ball (usually the QB) and its the safety/CB's responsibility for the "pitch" man.

Is that no longer true?

I don't know what is or is not being taught but there was one play where he wasn't chasing anyone he was in the middle field and had no idea where the ball was as the ball carrier ran right by him.

That, combined with the instances discussed in this thread, leads me to believe his awareness is just really, really bad.

This happens with him a lot or he goes with the fake and puts himself out of position.

Depends on the scheme and personnel... I promise you that watching what Steiner did he was taught/told to do that and probably drilled it 20 times in practice last week.

I haven't watched all of LSU's games, but generally if the back has broken big plays in the past and is really good, there will be a focus on taking away the pitch and making the QB turn upfield. Puts a hit on the QB and avoids a big play as you should have more help inside. If you allow that pitch and your CB/Safety misses a tackle it's off to the races.

Their RB was a walk on. The QB leads their team in rushing. He ain’t Stidham.

BB, that makes the most sense.

We were taught to try and make him pitch it early before the QB could turn the corner.

in other words. We never had a linebacker run out of bounds while the ball carrier ran right past him.

Yea trust me I'm not trying to defend the staff coaching him to do that. I'm just saying he was coached to do that and there are reasons staff could make that decision.

Depends on scheme and whatever actual play is called on defense. If the secondary is playing man, then the CB has to run off with the WR and likely has no idea where the ball is because his back is turned.

I played CB in HS and for one game we went to a cover 3 to put an extra man down in the box with a safety. They kept running a counter option play to my side where I had been taught all week in practice and film sessions that I had the pitch man. Well, they ended up blocking it different than they showed on film and absolutely gashing us the entire first half. We go in at halftime and the secondary coach tells us we are doing everything like we were taught but we gotta change it up to where the CB to whichever side they ran the play to was just supposed to eat up a block on the pulling guard to free up the LBs to clean it up. Worked like a charm, but sucked balls having to get mauled by a guy with 100 pounds and a running start a couple times every possession.

This exactly. If anything it's being assignment sound which seems crazy sometimes when it's not working but that's what adjustments are for.

Taking on a pulling guard as a CB would be awful haha
