Are we too critical of our defense and Pete Golding?

Hey guys new poster here. My question is are we giving our defense and Pete Golding too much of a hard time? I see everyone gawking over Georgia’s defense but when we played them last year they looked slow and discombobulated. I think it’s time to accept that great offenses will score and unfortunately we play in the SEC west and will face many good ones. Anyways would love to hear y’all’s feedback and ROLL TIDE!!!!!

yes. We are top 10 nationally in most areas when I see stats posted. it is hard to be like the 92 team with all these teams who spread them and throw the ball quickly to avoid sacks. RPO's are hard to defend. Even NS said so the other day

Good morning Mr. Golding. No, we are not too critical but our defense has been been good this year.

Most people aren’t complaining about the defense much. It’s the offense

Hard to say. With all we brought back on that side of the ball I expected a pretty dominate unit from start to finish all season long. We haven’t had many chances to truly evaluate but October will tell the story. Sark was absolutely owning him with his opening couple of scripted drives but Sark will do that to most people. Defense definitely kept us in that game, albeit against a hobbled backup QB. I’m no Golding fan, but I’ll see how the October schedule plays out before calling for his head (again
)

I feel like Golding has gotten our run defense back to a good place and getting the signals in isn't a mess anymore. My two big complaints with him are the idiotic delayed blitzes on 3rd and 13 and those stunts that ask a 315 pound DT to run like 20+ yards to get to the QB. He has cut back on that crap this year. So far.

Agree with Robot. My biggest complaints in the past were communication and how lost we looked in certain games for multiple drives. So far so good with both those things, which is to be expected with a veteran group but still has been very crisp. Sark dialed us up, but as noted above, Sark will/has dialed a lot of folks up.
Our run defense has gotten better and better since 2019 and is absolutely elite again this year.
Our specialty stuff seems to kind of suck (blitzes, twists, etc), but it could just be I only remember the ones that don't work.
All in all, Pete isn't a problem. I think he's gotten better at things he struggled with early on and is a solid DC.

Let's wait until we play another team with a pulse.
It's still early this season, 3rd and Golding may still be a thing...

If you’re talking about the Texas game no. They played undisciplined and our DBs which were supposed to be a real strength were getting burned badly. Stupid penalties mainly by our best player out of frustration was a significant problem. That’s coaching either from a talent recognition problem or a technique issue. That said I have no problem with Golding as far as what he calls. It would be nice however if we made adjustments in the fly and not at halftime.

Our cornerbacks were the single area of the defense that was a question mark due to youth and inexperience, and Sark went after them.

We were #1 in the SEC and #7 in the nation in 3rd down defense last year.
We're currently #2 in the SEC and #8 in the nation in 3rd down defense.

Pete was young and inexperienced when Saban hired him and has gotten better every year. In todays game , our defense is fine and usually gives us a chance to win each week…. Pete is doing fine and is a heck of a recruiter

The timing on this post and then this RBR article is pretty convenient.
Stop Whining: Alabama's defense and Pete Golding are really good

Defense has been good and rushing offense has been pretty good. Young receivers will come around imo, and the offensive line may jell with a new coach. It's pointless, though, to try to reason with the whinos.

Very true. I also think if Georgia had played against Texas they would've had similar struggles. It's hard to play man coverage against Sark.

Lol no I’m not Pete Golding. Just a fan making an observation.
