2022 and beyond expectations

So this board is dead, but we’ve got the spring game coming up, so let’s talk football as I don’t care as much about basketball or baseball. I wanted to see what the board’s pulse was for the coming season and even further. At the end of last season we had a pretty good split of people who believed in Jimbo, and those that didn’t and I’m wondering if the off-season has changed any of that.
I’ll say I was definitely a Jimbo defender to end the season and still support him today, but the leash is getting awfully short. It took Dabo a few years to get Clemson rolling, but even they had a conference championship win within 4 years (and I don’t care that ACC is weaker than SEC). Jimbo is heading into year 5, what do y’all expect this year?
Copy and pasted from a post I made a week ago on the rant, my opinion is: “I’m expecting around a 9 win season, which still isn’t good enough for where Jimbo has been recruiting and how long he’s been here now”
QB and the offense in general is just such an unknown, losing Elko to call the defense…. I think we can out talent teams easily still, but in close games we might still be in trouble.
Long term I think he’s gotta win a conference title within the next 2-3 years. You can’t build stability hiring and firing every 3-4 seasons like the sips, but at some point Jimbo has had all the tools, plenty of budget/support, players, etc. and plenty of time to do something with it all. When do you draw the line and say, the game has passed him up?

I still believe in Jimbo.
Looking forward to the spring game, I need some A&M football in my life

You cant just over look the fact that Dabo only had to go through one maybe two tough teams when on any given year we have to beat Bama, Auburn, LSU and now the Mississippi's are rolling and so is Arky. So the weaker conference thing is a big deal. That being said I agree with you that the next 2-3 years something big needs to happen. My expectations are 8-9 wins this season just given the youth and question marks in certain areas. QB play could be really good this year and maybe we exceed that number.

If Fisher can figure out the QB position, then he could absolutely meet expectations. Our preseason bowl this year is actually the Sugar Bowl in the preseason guesses. I just want to see what Weigman could do in this offense sometime in the next couple of years. I expect one of the three to transfer before the season

I still believe in Jimbo, but there is a ton of pressure on him this year. Anything less than 10-2 and I will be pretty disappointed. And I agree on winning a conference title in the next 2-3 years. The circumstances weren’t great last year with injuries, but we’ve now had enough recruiting cycles where the depth should be built to have no excuse. I think he delivers on both.
I am interested to see what the offense looks like this year - there shouldn’t be limitations with what looks like a deep QB room, easily the best we’ve had on paper since he’s been here.

It no doubt is, and Im not arguing that it isnt way harder to do in the SEC, but at the end of the day how are coaches judged? Conference championships and National Titles. Not how many division titles did they win, or how many "close seasons" did they have.
Harder conference or not, Jimbo cant go a decade (the original contract length) without winning the SEC, just cant. Hes heading into year 5 right now...

I agree, within the next 3 years he needs to make a legit run at it or win it all. After that the seat might start getting hot?

I think King and/or Weigman will be good enough to lead us to the playoffs. We should see 10 wins this year and then 2023 and 2024 should be legit playoff contenders.

He wins 10 regular season games in 2022
He wins a national championship in 2023

I've been burned so many times with A&M teams failing to meet expectations that I simply don't have any.

Remember two or three years ago when Arky and Ole Miss were considered sure wins? And then they got new coaches. This is a tough conference and no team is OK with being a sure win for another team. There will be tough challenging games next season. I hope we win some of them.

Both of those football programs improved and are hungry

Yeah, it’s silly to discount the fact that we share a division with 5 programs that consistently recruit better than Clemson’s closest divisional competition.
If you swapped A&M for Clemson we’d have won the ACC Atlantic every single year since Jimbo arrived.

We dont play in the ACC, we play in the SEC. And Jimbo has no skins on the wall except 1 NY6 bowl win, thats it.
Again, I dont want to come off like I want a coaching change, I still think he's the right guy/our best option right now, but he's running out of time/excuses.

We also wouldn’t have the talent we have or the coaching staff we have if we played in the ACC. It’s a stupid hypothetical. When you’re shelling out the type of money we are eventually there needs to be tangible results. We are approaching that point

When do we (if ever) start talking hot seat? What's that point?

My battered aggie syndrome won't let me have expectations. It took almost 20 years to get to this point, and it's not ideal, but it does make football season easier to tolerate.

We also wouldn’t have the talent we have
The truth is that one class alone isn't going to make us talented. The media wants to create an "all of nothing" narrative on this 2022 class because it makes good headlines. But deep down we all know it's going to take at least two more top 3 classes to get to Alabama and Georgia's level.
We're not there yet. 2022 alone isn't going to make us elite. Quit falling for that narrative. There's still a lot more work that needs to be done.

The truth is we recruited at a very high level the few years before this as well, and those are all his classes. I’m not falling for any narrative or saying we need to win a national title this year. The bar does need to continue to be raised though as time goes on.

If we go 8-4 again this year I think the heat is probably turned up going into 23. Who knows after that.

We have. But those classes haven't been necessarily elite. We're still being out-recruited by Alabama and Georgia (two teams we have to get past on the way to the playoffs).
The talent gap is still there in several positions.
