Due to being out of town with my son. I was expecting to see Buchner be the worst performer in the first half based on this board’s take, he wasn’t (although it clearly wasn’t great).
Order of terrible performances:
1) OL - what an absolute disgrace. With Buchner as QB, we ran 11 designed runs. Only 2 of those got more than 3 yds…against a horrible USF defense…that wasn’t stacking the box with 8 defenders (only 2 more gained 3 yds, so 7/11 were 2 yds or less and 4/11 were no gain or negative…just horrible).
2) Jermaine Burton - the first pass that didn’t move the chains was behind him, so that was on Buchner. But the 2nd pass that would have been a huge play on 3rd down, he not only gave zero effort to try and get a foot in bounds, he literally jumped out of bounds on purpose while shaking his head trying to blame the QB. Maybe the ball goes off his finger tips if he drags his feat, but as the announcer said, you have to try and keep the feet in even if you fall while trying to make the catch. Terrible effort. The third pass was the worst and most costly. TD pass hit him in the hands. Even if the pass was a little long, any receiver hoping to get drafted in the first 2 days lays out to make that catch. Absolutely no excuse to not haul that in, and the game is completely different if he does. Buchner probably plays the whole game in that case. Burton has been seriously underwhelming.
3) Buchner. While he made virtually every read correctly, he had at least 2 pretty bad passes to open receivers. The first behind Burton and the swing pass ahead of the receiver causing him to have to dive and get 0 yds. You might be able to add 1 or 2 more off of the bootlegs where he had a defender in his face, but I blame that more on #1 and #4 as explained below.
4) Rees - naked bootlegs against a team with undersized, fast defensive ends that are crashing hard and don’t have to respect our run game?!?! There’s a reason why the 1 read option play where Tyler pulled it and got the first down worked…because the ends were crashing all game. Bootlegs work against slow defense ends that are squeezing the run and can’t beat the QB to the sideline. 2 completely wasted plays. How do you attack undersized ends? Run right at then with power football!!! Which takes me back to #1…what a disgrace by our OL to have only 2 successful runs out of 11 attempts against this defense.
My wall of words and rant is coming to an end, but Buchner wasn’t our biggest problem last Saturday and 3 of the 4 will still be contributing on Sat. Hoping we turn this around, but I’m going with “cautiously pessimistic” for the rest of the season.

While I agree our problems go beyond whoever the QB is, Buchner has a noodle arm and isn’t accurate. Not a good combo.

You're not saying anything new. This been debated to death.

Most opinions indicated Buchner was the reason we sucked in the first half with OL as a secondary blame, and very little mention of Burton’s abysmal effort.
But apologies for wasting 2 min of your Friday night :)

The pass tp Burton on the sideline he had absolutely no shot. The long ball to the end zone was close but he was running hard to get it. Buchner’s ball gave him like a 5% chamce to make an incredible catch. Putting either of those on the reciever is crazy.

I disagree. I watched the deep ball to Burton about 20 times. It looks like it hits him in both hands, if it doesn't hit him in both hands, it goes between his hands. I also think Burton should have been able that. I don't think Burton could have caught the sideline pass, but I do think he should have tried. The announcer was spot on. Burton decided not to try. I think his effort was no where close to where it needed to be, along with most of the offense. And that is on him.
But, on the flip side, Burton has never shown that he has an elite catch radius. If you're going to throw to him, it needs to be more accurate than Buchner was throwing. Complaining because Burton didn't make those plays is pointless. He has never made those plays. Not for us, and not for UGA. The QBs spends tons of time with these WRs. They all know what their limitations are, and they need to play to it. I think Buchner threw that pass as hard and far as he could and Burtons speed made it close. So while I think that he should have had that, it's probably too much to expect of him. I would expect it out if Prentiss and a few others. He is who he is at this stage of his career. He is a high floor low ceiling WR.

That should be good enough to get some playing time during mop up time. Get that guy off the field with that effort and attitude. I’ll take a young guy that makes a couple mistakes while giving 100% effort any day over a veteran that’s half a$$ing it when he knows better!!

Yea whoever is playing QB isn’t the real problem, but unfortunately the solution would be a lot easier if it was. The QBs are terrible but things are running way deeper than that.

I agree 100%. Our 3 best WRs right now are Malik Benson, Kobe Prentice, and Isaiah Bond - with Amari Niblack playing Flex/TE
Also really liked your breakdown. A lot of good insights into what was ultimately a complete shite-show on offense.
I think it's going to be a long season on offense, unfortunately. Everything seems to be disorganized, the play-calling is bad, and it seems to me like we don't have our best guys at each position.

I agree with that lineup.
I also agree that Burton should have had that sideline pass or tried for it. The announcer was right and my gut when I saw it was the same. He gave up on the play.

The O-line is most definitely the biggest concern, but Buchner is the answer to none of the questions. I was so excited for the potential change; and then he comes out there and throws like I would left handed. I am very, very right handed.

Nice try Mrs. Buchner. No one is interested in seeing your son and his comedically bad arm play another snap in crimson and white.

Buchner may not be the answer, but neither is Milroe. He may win a home game against Ole Miss, but he has 0 chance of winning a game against a stout defense like UGA in Atl.
I’d rather take some lumps with Lonergan, Simpson, or someone else who has a shot at processing a defense later this year or even next year. If we suck right now, then invest for the future. Think the team is running the show on this one and they chose a guy who quite literally was the point differential between winning and losing against Texas. If Milroe takes us to Atl and beats UGA, I will happily come back and say I was wrong.

Agreed. RG3 is an idiot for saying he could have got a toe down. There was no way Burton is reaching that ball without jumping out of bounds.

We don’t have a QB on our roster capable of this given how the rest of the team is playing.

I think it's incredible Buchner can be that bad.. I mean his throws were easy yet terrible.. he had mainly quick passes so he wasn't even bothered by USF rush.
Yet people will come here and make excuses for him.
When we don't make excuses for Milroe and say "this guy is limited but at the moment he is the best we have" that is unacceptable and delusional.
I mean damn take away the players names and just look at their stats. How can anyone defend Buchner??

Like how many times they hit defenders in the hands with a pass? I’ve looked at those and Milroe is incredibly adept at doing that. Some they catch and turn into points; some they drop and let our receiver catch it in the end zone while a penalty calls the TD back.
No one defended Buchner…we are just hoping to see someone who has the chance at learning to make better decisions with the ball and still use the full playbook so we have an opportunity to beat a good defense. That doesn’t appear to be Buchner, but it sure isn’t Milroe either.
I’m sure Milroe will beat Pete Golding and win the next game or 2. Everyone will feel good again until we play a competent defense…and then the passes to the other team or 8 man fronts will rear their head. Just wish we were investing in a guy who gave us a chance…even if that chance is next year.

Has anyone actually defended Buchner? I’ve seen way more people that think he’s the worst of the 3

Who made excuses for Buchner? OP was just stating that he thinks others were just as crappy (OL and Burton).
I actually agree the OL is our biggest issue but Burton was not.
Again, you try to make it about you and act like you are the smartest man on the board.
