Link: Yahoo Sports on 12 Team Playoff
Under the new format, the six highest-ranked conference champions will receive automatic bids. The field will then be filled out with the six highest-ranked teams remaining.
The four highest-ranked conference champions receive a first-round bye to the quarterfinals. In the first round, the matchups are No. 5 vs. No. 12, No. 6 vs. No. 11, No. 7 vs. No. 10, and No. 8 vs. No. 9. The first-round games are not played at neutral sites, with the lower seed having home-field advantage instead.
So with the PAC dissolving..
I hope they change the wording to 4 or 5 conference champs.
Top 4 Seeds (in some order)
SEC Champ
B1G Champ
Big 12 Champ
ACC Champ
(all get a bye)
Plus most years
3 SEC Teams
3 B1G Teams
2 G5 Conference Champs ?? wtf
Questions
Do the other 2 conference champs get the 5 and 6 seed? That will be really fricked up.
3 Big 12 Champ (bye)
vs
6 G5 Champ hosting 11 SEC?
4 ACC Champ (bye)
vs
5 G5 Champ hosting 12 B1G?
Seriously.. that’s kinda messed up..
the 11th and 12th seeds would have a really good path to the final 4
Even if you put them at 11 and 12..
5 and 6 are hosting them?
so 6 then plays the 3 seed?
Gimme that 6 seed all day long.

Remember this is more about trying to recreate the Cinderella story aspect of the NCAA basketball tournament. Yes we will know it’s statistically unlikely that a 10th ranked Utah Or Arizona ect. Will knock off a Georgia or Ohio state but 10 million people who don’t follow either school will tune in to see if it might happen
We will ALL watch and advertisers will pay big money to show us their products while we watch. Mostly blood baths but every now and then there will be an upset that makes us keep watching them all.

They can’t do this anymore. The PAC 12 doesn’t exist and the Big 12 is essentially a G5 at this point.
Need to just get rid of auto qualifiers

I get that, and I’m okay with a cinderella component.. but it’s just kinda screwy how it is gonna play out.
3 seed Arizona (Big 12 Champ) gets a bye
then plays
6 seed SEC team hosts 11 seed Tulane
That’s a pretty good path to the Final 4 for that 6 seed.
Whereas the 1 seed has to face the 8/9 winner which is gonna be the 2nd or 3rd best teams in the SEC or B1G?
Just think there are going to be some problems with the way they set it up.. but you are right, we will all soak it up and watch it.
A lower level team is gonna get a whole lot better if they make the playoffs every year.. which is a good thing. SMU shouldn’t be joining the ACC imo.

Am I reading this right. In the 5- 12 game it’s played at 12’s home stadium….?….

The 5-8 seeds will be the host.
lower meaning closer to 1
I am not sure if the 5th and 6th conference winners will get the 5th and 6th seeds or if the bottom 8 are seeded by a ranking.

Maybe, but the main thing this will help with is taking at least some of the bias inherent in the system out. Plenty of schools never get a good chance to get to top 4 even when they have a equal record on paper. Others start slow, but then very well maybe a top 4 team at the end of the year, but have no hope based on a loss. Yes, any playoff allows for some unexpected result, but if you can win 4 straight games against top competition, then I am fine in calling you a champion.

It should be 8, so the regular season is still incredibly important.
1 and 2 automatically get into Semi finals
3 and 4 automatically in quarter-finals
Winner of 8 v 5 plays 3 seed in Quarters
Winner of 6 v 7 plays 2 seed in Quarters
1 and 2 automatically get into Semi finals
3 and 4 automatically in quarter-finals
Winner of 8 v 5 plays 3 seed in Quarters
Winner of 6 v 7 plays 2 seed in Quarters

It’s going to change they already said so nothing your typing even matters .The people who are thinking the Big 12 won’t be getting automatic qualifier with that big of conference are just stupid fuxs.

How I think it should be:
1 SEC
1 B1G
1 Big 12
1 ACC
1 Group 5
7 Wildcards
I’m okay with 4 highest ranked Conf Champs getting a bye
1st round matchups should avoid rematches and avoid conference matchups, if possible.. move a seed up to 2 spots to accomplish this
field should be reseeded after Round 1, including the conference champs
1) to get the best matchups
2) avoid rematches already played, if possible
Reseed after Round 2 to do the same for the final 4 teams
I think the reseeding is important if they can figure out a way to do it without bias. Perhaps computer composite rankings that are proven without bias. AP + Coaches have bias..
perhaps add a rule for adding up to 2 more teams when the teams at 12, 13, 14 etc are all too close to make a decision..
in that case, perhaps only the 1 and 2 seed get a bye, or you could have a play in game..
I think it will be 16 teams in no time, with no byes.. after they see how popular the home playoff games are.. the teams with byes will wish they had those

Most likely; it will change to 5.
However with the Wazzu and Orst lawsuit. I’m curious if the MWC doesn’t become the the PAC and retain its autonomy.
I think it’s gonna get interesting.
But the traditional G5 leagues are absolute getting at least 1 champion in. With that I think it’s a better chance that Boise ST and Tulane find the playoffs more often than some P5 programs; teams like UCF, Houston, and Cincinnati have actually made it less likely to get in the playoffs for their schools.

5 from the Big, 5 from the SEC, top 2 others, let’s play.

Not sustainable IMO.
Fun but not sustainable

There will be some auto qualifiers this time, so actually this is not correct.

I thought the demise of the PAC12 meant this format was likely DOA?
Posted on 9/25/23 at 8:25 am to BigBro
It should not exist. There should not be any byes in college football.
