Offensive coordinator Chad Morris may have brought a new and possibly improved offense to Auburn, but without any sort of run game, it’s been hard for him to demonstrate his changes.

For two straight games Auburn struggled on the ground, so its opponents knew it could lock down on the passing game. In week three, Auburn finally got its run game going against Arkansas. As a result, the Tigers were able to establish some sort of offensive rhythm.

With the rain coming down, the Razorbacks knew that the Tigers would try to run the ball, but they still weren’t able to stop them. That meant that once the skies cleared, the Tigers had both running and passing options available to them.

“We’ve been talking all along about, you know, just needing to be balanced,” coach Gus Malzahn said.

quote:

As the Tigers started to throw it more in the second half, the numbers on the ground dropped. With both halves skewed heavily towards the passing or rushing game, the Tigers weren’t quite as two-dimensional as they would like to be.

In the first half, they had 215 rushing yards to 45 passing yards, and in the second, they had 44 rushing yards to 142 passing yards.

Even though they were held to 44 rushing yards, the Tigers' rushers still presented a threat, which helped open up the passing game.

Taking away the two times quarterback Bo Nix was sacked, the Tigers ran for 59 yards. Running back Tank Bigsby had four rushes for more seven yards or more, and his presence alone made a difference.

“It makes my job a lot easier when he’s running the ball like that,” Nix said. The Razorbacks had to keep an eye on him, even once Auburn started focusing on its receivers downfield.

quote:

Tight end J.J. Pegues also adds another element to Morris’s offense. Pegues has lined up in Wildcat multiple times now.

He did it twice to help Auburn gain the yard or two it needed for a first down against Georgia. Against Arkansas, he demonstrated he can make more explosive plays than that. After taking the snap, Pegues spun out wide and picked up 11 yards.

Since that package has proven successful, Auburn will continue to develop it. Pegues also has the ability to block and to make catches, so when he’s on the field, the defense must be wary, even if he’s not lined up in Wildcat.

“He’s a very athletic guy that I think could be a real good piece of the puzzle for us moving forward,” Malzahn said.

quote:

Another tight end, Brandon Frazier, could add another element to the game once he returns from injury. Although he’s not quite as big as Pegues' 300-pound frame, Frazier is large.

Yet he has really “soft hands,” Malzahn said. He, too, could be a receiving threat. As players return from injury, Morris will have more and more options, Malzahn said.

With a very young team and a new coordinator, the players still have to get used to each other and to their coach.

“We got three games under our belt for coach Morris to know about our guys and everything that goes with that,” Malzahn said.

quote:

While Nix is in his second year, many of the players he can turn to are not.

Bigsby is a true freshman, as are a number of the receivers Auburn has put on the field. Auburn has used numerous lineups, Malzahn said, and the challenge of that is reflected in Nix’s low completion percentage.

The offensive line is also very inexperienced. They’ve struggled to protect Nix and give him time to go through his reads, and, until the Arkansas game, they’ve struggled to protect the rushers.

Once the young catch up to the speed of the game and become more comfortable in the offense, Morris will be able to get a little more creative. Installing a new system takes time, something that’s been in short supply ever since the COVID-19 pandemic hit the country. But with the run game established, things may start to go more smoothly for the rest of the offense.

Excuses. Why does it always take GM weeks to figure out the offense? This team is not good and all things point to a disappointing season

Good? maybe. perfect? not at all.

The expectation at this point is everything should be perfect every play and win every game by 20.

I said before the season we wouldn't be able to know what this season is like until it's over.

Any other team/Coach would get a "grace" period after an OC change. If you think our offense or offensive play calling is anything like Gus last year then you should lose your right to opinion.

Gus would have never thrown the ball in the second half he would have continued to pound the run. We ran for 200+ in the first half and it appeared Arky didn't make any alignment adjustments to start the second half. Should have continued to run the power and the counter that was having so much success on especially the counter to the right side of the line.

I think it is important to establish a balanced attack.

Just bc we were gouging them with runs, that is the perfect time to work on your passing game.

To just want to pound IS getting back to a Malzahn offense.

That is what we are trying to get away from. Sorry, I was glad to see them try to open it up with the passing in the second half.

The results? HEck no.

But the OL is not going to get any consistency if they don't work on pass blocking too, right?

Im not sure what you want this offense to be? The old Gus of about 70% run? I don't

I thought you for sure want to see a diversified offense with route trees and passes to other weapons(TE, RB) and seam passes, curls, slants, etc...

Without the spring, and the limited full practices due to positive COVIDs on the team earlier, then learning on the job is the only way....especially with a new OC and new starting OL.

This hasn't hampered Bama or Ole Miss in any way. Just saying....

Because he waste the preseason camps with walk-throughs and playing favorites instead of holding competition for playing time.

The Midget being the starting RB tells you everything you need to know about Gus' fall camps. Same reason why we can't feild a competent OL and it has to change after on the feild failures.

Or Arky (entirely new coaching staff) or LSU (who replaced their genius QB coach/play caller, their starting backfield, their two best WRs and 3/5 of their starting OL).

I prefer more passing then Gus was doing but I can find a lot of good in a lot of different style offenses.

Like I have mentioned before next coach has to bring in a pro spread philosophy to get the players you need to compete. Chad is more pro spread then Gus but both rely on spacing more then matchups. Only matchup they seem to work towards is Seth when you could work multiple matchups. Then they always work their wrinkle play. Like pegues in motion to block on the screen. Then next time later in the game same formation same motion and he fakes the block and runs the wheel route. In reality he’s probably not the player you want trying to catch a ball 25 yards downfield. Just my opinion of course.

But back again I love multiple styles of offense. The offense I ran in high school and as similar to Gus but I went zone blocking only with a TE. Could either flex or hand in the ground and I had multiple pistol sets for stretch plays. The route trees aren’t that multiple in high school it’s usually trying to put a linebacker or safety in ways to exploit them making them commit to one route or another. A lot of two man routes essentially either in the middle or some like a outside stop route, curl, button hook. With the slot running a corner route. Simple like that and easy to read for a high school qb. If not there take off running lol

You may be right...but I don't know if ARK or lSU had returning OL starters.

That's where it starts. And we all know Kiffin is an Offensive genius and I figured he would have their offense clicking.

I wish our offense looked more consistent. Is it possible it starts with the QB and he is struggling to adjust too?

In the end...we need to see improvement offensively or we will be looking at the same problems we have had over the last multiple years, even with a different OC running it.

This may have been discussed somewhere and I just haven’t seen it... didn’t know where to ask, but since this thread is about the run game and expanding the offense, it seemed appropriate..... but where is MAR? For two years, we’ve heard about his athleticism and ability, and he hasn’t seen the field one time this year? Is he hurt? With worm out and Joiner transferring, it would seem that opportunities would be there. Tank is a STUD, but there are/were times where he was gassed. Seems to me we would give MAR a chance and develop talent when we can, rather than ride one horse in to the ground which we’ve seen from our retarded HC many times.

He is the new Devan Barrett...if he stays, expect him to end up on defense within the next year.
