This was the beginning of the end. 2015. After 2014, everyone wanted a balanced attack. Not sure why. Our run game was doing just fine. I prefer a run heavy team. No hiding that. Plus, Malzahn has no idea how to run the type of offense he has been running against this level of play.

His biggest mistake and it’s why he should be replaced.

It’s like hiring Mike Tyson and asking him to read to you.

Not sure I’d call it “established” just yet, but the first half looked promising. Not sure why quit in the second half just to watch Nix miss.

IMO, we need to be running the ball as much as Tank/DJ can handle. A run-heavy team. This is not a passing team, our QB is questionable and the o-line looks bad in pass blocking.

I want a balanced offense. One that can win with or without a dominant run game or dominant passing game.

To only want to run, will not win us those games against strong defenses. They will stack the line, an force you to score with a passing game.

Great post.

I think our “run heavy” offense worked so well because we had perfect personnel for it those first two years. And Nick managed to burn opposing defenses enough with the passing game that they couldn’t sell out against the run.

Since then we have never had the kind of key players to run that offense, so we no longer have that identity. I don’t know if Gustav is too stubborn, or just can’t recruit the kind of players that would make it work anymore.

TL;DR version. The offense is the exact same.

You’re welcome.

We are not recruiting those type players. Its not just that we dont have them, we are not looking for them. That is on Gus and like I have said in the past, it is why he will be removed in the end. And it should be. He had something he was good at, he could have built on that instead of letting outside noise and his ego mess it up.

I have never liked this style of offense with him. Never have, never will. He can not run this style of offense at a high level. Easy to see

Either his ego or he was not strong enough to stick to his guns. Not sure if it was one of those things or a combo of both of them.

You hate the pass blocking, just wait till you see the run blocking!

Got to give you credit - you’ve been beating this drum since 2015.

I thought he had proven he was capable of adapting his offense to available personnel based on his two years as OC at Tulsa and his first year as OC at AU. For awhile in late 2017 it appeared that he could.

Then 2018 happened. Everything since has pointed to the accuracy of your opinion.

We had 200+ rushing int he first half against Arkansas. It’s the only bright spot on offense right now.

I actually think he did a good job last year when he went back to calling the plays. I know we were not strong but the play calling for the most part was not the issue. I was actually surprised that he hired Chad and went to what we are doing this year. I was hoping he would keep calling the plays and it would be all his.

Last year was a learning year with his going back to play calling, a new Offensive line and a new QB. I didnt think it was terrible, just bad at times and unfortunate at times.

This year, it has just been bad all around.

Lol we aren't good on offense. We won't be good on offense and Gus is still our coach.

This is the most Gus article ever in that he probably really thinks he has an established ground game now.

I know. one good game running, in the rain, doesn't equate yet to having a running game...but...

One difference is I feel we do have some better guards to work with than Horton and Harrell.

Another is Tank. If the line can give him a crease, he will make the second level miss or break a tackle. He is a lot like Mason was with that ability to extend the run.

It seems this idea gets traction every year.

Gus is in year 8. Two full recruiting cycles. We really don’t have an identity. That’s the main issue. I don’t care if we are spread, run and shoot, wishbone, I, pro set, etc. please just find some plays we can execute with our personnel.
