Nike stock is down 53% over the past 5 years.

I think Knight is a practical person. I think with any coach he’d love for them to stay but he’s not going to hold them hostage by throwing stupid money at them. It also helps that they have a very well established program there that will attract a great coach and they can keep chugging along.. Oregon isn’t this untouchable program that everyone thinks it is.. the travel sucks, especially if you have southern and midwestern roots like Lanning. You’re really a cog in the wheel who will always be overshadowed by Nike and uniform combos. You can be great but you’ll never be legendary because it’s a program you simply maintain. You didn’t build it.

And now for the reality. Nike money has not kept one single coach at that school. Every last Oregon coach has left the program for other offers.. People have this misconception that Knight is just going to throw dump truck loads of money at a coach if other teams come calling, but that’s simply not the case
Mario Cristobal left Oregon to go back to his Alma Mater, in his hometown, so he could coach his old team, and be close to his dying mother. And even then, he agonized over leaving Oregon.

Any coach that could win a natty there would be a legend, because they have never won one. Oregon is Auburn’s bitch, but people here think Auburn couldn’t pull their coach if Cohen really wanted to.

sssshhhhhh, that doesn't fit his narrative.
The one who left willingly before Cristobal went to be an NFL HC.
We can compete with anybody money wise. We are Auburn. Coaches are falling all over themselves for our job. Look at the long history of big name HC's we have hired.

Oregon has made it a point to be considerably more aggressive in doing what it takes to retain coaches, for the literal reason that you just brought up. So whatever happened before with coaches leaving is not going to apply any longer. They will just match whatever offer you put out for Lanning.

I read something recently that Auburn seniors have only seen 4 SEC wins at home in their 4 years. That is sad. Bring in Sumrall and let’s ride!

We would have a much better chance with any of the top tier coaches. Granted, it would be harder to convince any of them to take the job but if LSU can offer Kiffin 90 million dollars then Auburn should be able to make a similar offer to Dan Lanning
So you’d target (1) Lanning who told Bama and everybody else last year to eff off or (2) Kiffin who turned us down once already and has created a complete circus this cycle?

Why do you consider Sumrall to be the apathy choice
I clearly worded my post poorly. I simply meant that I reached the point of apathy years ago. Be it between having to work every Saturday to us just being terrible, I just couldn’t invest as much of my fall life around Auburn football as much as I’d like to.
CJS may be the next best thing since sliced bread. He could be our next Pat Dye or our version of Urban Meyer. But he could just as easily be our Napier, Butch Jones, Tom Herman, or Bryan Harsin2.0. There aren’t really any sure fire candidates. I’ll get behind whoever we hire until he gives me a reason not to support him.
Just for once in my life I’d like to see us make a truly splash hire in football like Bruce Pearl was in basketball.

If tweet fails to load, click here. I believe that Sumrall is only one of four coaches that have had at least 9 wins in each of their first four years as a head coach and that is after Tulane being decimated by the portal both years that he has been there. He turned around a terrible Troy team instantly.
He has totally rebuilt this years roster and has average talent there and he is still winning. He has them sniffing a playoff berth with that talent.
You could probably get him for 8-8.5 million.
Hire him and put the extra money that you would save on Durkin and a solid offensive coordinator. That would give you enough to bump Durkin if you wanted to and 2.5 million for an OC.
Or you could spend 10-11 million on Drinkwitz alone.
No brainer.

This and this. Stop with the splash hire nonsense. We see now if a head coach had kept his arse out of the playbook the coordinators would have probably had us in the playoffs.
Sumrall is perfect for what we need, some friggin disipline, and a no nonsense approach to holding players accountable for the paycheck they are receiving. He sets the culture and deals with board, school adm, recruiting, and management of the overall administration of the program. NIL will handle the lion's share of recruiting, a winning program will handle the rest.
The game has changed fellas, aint no Lombardi or Bear coming back. Sumrall, two good coordinators and we rolling baby.

Brian Kelly was a splash hire at LSU.
Jimbo was a splash at Texas A&M
Prime was a splash at Colorado.
Riley was a splash at USC
You can count on one hand the number that are maybe guaranteed.
Lanning?
Kiffin?
Day?
Kirby?
And they ain't moving. At least not to Auburn.
Who would you classify as a splash hire that Auburn could get that is guaranteed to succeed?
I give Jacobs credit for being willing to hire Pearl but do you really believe he would have came to Auburn if not for his situation?

Im hearing Lane is a done deal
Posted on 11/23/25 at 4:10 pm to FlyDownTheField
Ok.
Bring him on.
Just remember that we will probably be dealing with what Ole Miss is in three years.
Lane is for Lane and he will bolt again when the next shiny object appears.

I don't want Lane. But I'd be intriqued by him at HC if he kept Nix at OC and Durk at DC

Anyone that doesn’t want Lane is suspect lol
