Easy to please was firing Gus much later than we should have

And then the next two coaches neither made it through 3 full years. The one before him we fired a year and a half after a national championship. It is absurd to say the reason the program is in the shitter is because AU fans are "easy to please". Frankly we are an extremely difficult fanbase to please, we are just a very loyal one that shows up to games. The reason we are in the shitter is because we had one booster and President give Gus an absolutely ludicrous contract extension (when the fanbase was already largely ready to move on) that hamstrung our next hiring, coupled with an AD that went rogue behind everyone's back. None of that has anything to do with the fanbase being "easy to please".

You boys find us a coach yet?
Posted on 11/21/25 at 11:12 am to NewYrkTiger
I'm with you. Brohm is a good but not great coach. He had 4 pretty bad years at Purdue before he had 2 years that by Purdue standards were very good. That's not as good as Drinkiwitz at Mizzou who a lot of the same people would go ballistic if he was hired. His tenure at Louisville isn't anything special either. Petrino never lost more than 3 games there his 1st go around and had 2 1 loss seasons so this idea that what he's doing is unprecedented is ignoring reality.

Well, that's the nature of coaching hires. No one is a sure thing. Most of them end up being bad hires. Going for the splashy name doesn't actually increase your odds of success, it just helps assuage some folks' feelings.

LOL.
You mean back when Louisville was in Conference USA?
Gee, isn't that an important detail that you are missing?
Dude conveniently cherry picks Petrino's "first tenure" as a reference point (why not the second, more recent tenure hmm?) but fails to note that Louisville was a G5 school until 2014 when they formally joined the ACC.
I'll correct your work for you: Petrino was 77-35 at Louisville in the ACC (68.75 winning %). Jeff Brohm is currently 26-11 (70.27% winning %). So Brohm is putting up a marginally improved winning percentage vs. Petrino, however you also need to account for the fact that Petrino had prime Lamar Jackson starting at QB for two of his seasons.

To complicate matters further Sumrall’s biggest supporters here don’t even seem excited about the guy. There’s no frick yeahs, no trolling the rant, no shite talking or dancing bananas
I think you attribute this to the fact that he’s not been hired yet.

When I say easy to please, I'm speaking directly to the fact that most auburn fans are very comfortable with mid tier coaching hires. There's really no push to pursue higher profile guys. Kiffin three years ago is of course an outlier, but he is also a much hotter commodity today than he was then. Had three years ago not happened, I very seriously doubt we even bother throwing our hat in the ring this go around. It's easy to say you want to compete at a high level like Bama and LSU, but every time that opportunity comes around we aim low.

Partially
But I think most AU fans are realistic about this cycle.
There was a clear top pick. That top pick clearly believed the other two SEC openings were better than ours (or so it seems). So we knew our station and mostly hypothesized accordingly.
If anything it's probably a sign of how dampened the AU ambition is. LSU's fans think Saban is coming back, and our boards are half-filled with arguments for Charles Kelly.

I'll just put out there we have yet to see any factual information that Kiffin is interested in LSU or UF. Everything you just posted relies on message board post for a baseline.

Sure, to the extent we have no factual information about anything at all in coaching searches that are ongoing until they sign and are announced.
But pretty much every writer for every board and every CFB writer in the country would agree that LSU and UF are targeting Kiffin and he's likely to either go to one of those schools or stay at Ole Miss. Even the Ole Miss writers say that.

Because Petrino wasn't the same coach after the motorcycle incident. Brohm also isn't coaching in the same ACC that Petrino did in his second stint and he's about to have 4 losses in the weakest ACC ever. You can lol and scoff all you want. He's a good but not great coach with a limited ceiling that isn't getting hired by Auburn.

Maybe. I'll also point out Kiffin and his record is terrible. He had to come back this weekend vs a really bad UF team. He has only won the Conference USA title as a HC. To say he is a clear cut top coach is laughable. If you want to argue that we should be going after Lanning, then I would agree. Outside of him, you have to cherry pick information on Drink, Sumrall, Kiffin, etc to find separation.

Kiffin’s success at FAU & Ole Miss is simply undeniable. He’s immature and an a-hole and no he doesn’t have SEC titles or natties on his resume yet but he has proven to be an upper tier HC

As much as I dislike Tuberville I will admit, he made a lot of players that were average at best and made them into great players. If you would have bet me that we would have three top ten picks in the draft I’d have bet everything I owned against that.

Buster Faulkner needs to be looked at. He has #1 offense in CFB right now.

Has he had more success than Drink or Dilly? What in his record makes him the clear cut favorite this cycle?
