Didn't he basically cancel an interview with them? I can't imagine it sitting well with him that he's essentially a back up plan.

I'd bet money that he did interview and it simply wasn't supposed to get out, hence the backtracking.

Trending towards us getting what will be viewed as the 4th or maybe 5th best hire (depending on Lane/Ole Miss) out of the SEC job openings, even behind Arky. Doesn't mean the hires will play out that way (they basically never do), but maybe a reality check in terms of our perception

Remember when people here didn’t want James Franklin?

Good times.

I think people are just freaking out over nothing. Our search has been over for a while and waiting to announce Durkin makes zero sense

Nathan King 247

ESPN reporting he will make his coaching decision Sunday morning. That lines up with Auburn's expected timeline from him; Auburn reps were expecting that, if he were to be hired, it would be Sunday. Auburn people have been talking around campus about setting up a press conference Monday. We believe that was with the expectation Sumrall would be hired.

Waiting to announce Durkin at least gives Cohen the cover to say he conducted a real coaching search.

What are you on about? This is just completely baseless speculation and humbugism.

You don’t say

That Low article is kind of a no duh. If Florida is out of the Kiffen war, they’d have to put together a deal for Sumerall quickly if they wanted him. Low really going out on a limb there.

Lea and Drink would end up just like the last few, more bad hires and payouts.

If the national media guys are all reporting that Sumrall and Florida are working towards a deal, then that is likely what is happening. Those guys don't drum up nonsense for clicks, they don't have a particular fanbase to appease to.

Why would that report leak today if Sumrall has some super-secret deal in place with Auburn already?

You're right, two guys who have or will have won 10 games in the SEC at garbage bottom-feeder programs will obviously never succeed at Auburn with 3x more resources. We'll take DJ Durkin instead - the guy who got fired at Maryland in two seasons and who literally nobody else in the country wants as their HC .

I would rather have Durkin than Drink, but I would take Lea over Durkin.

Drink sucks.

Both just got extended though, and don't seem to be AU candidates at all.

You don't have to convince me that beat writers everywhere suck at the infowars lol I have been on that train for decades

meta, while i generally have agreed with most of your takes during this search, i contend that ‘winning 10 games at garbage bottom feeder programs means they will succeed at AU with 3x more resources’ is the same logic that stuck us with Freezus

i do concur with your second point though - although i like DJ, nothing in his career leads me to think he’s the right guy for AU now

When he took VaTech they were 116th recruiting class. They are now about to be in the top 25 with the addition of a 4* that’s visiting this weekend
