I know we do our best to keep politics off this board, but I saw this editorial on the Plainsman's website and I'm floored. When did Auburn students become like this? Why would anyone think a land grant college in a small(ish) town in the deep south would be anything but majority conservative?

A plight with the Auburn Family

quote:

When I saw the disparity among the white sea of faces in my lecture hall, Auburn radicalized me.

When I saw a man, peacefully protesting, beaten mercilessly at Toomer’s Corner, Auburn radicalized me.

When I saw the long-standing Oaks of Toomer's rolled in celebration of Trump’s win, Auburn again radicalized me.

What truly are the traits of the Auburn Family? Have we finally seen what they are?

Auburn and the pain brought by those who attempt to stifle minority opinions radicalized me to love unconditionally and to use my words to speak for those who cannot or are not yet ready to speak out.

Though I love Auburn deeply, the veil of ignorance was lifted off my eyes in October after seeing how quickly hate could overpower the town's judgment. I learned quickly how those I serve at my job, young or old, student or local, could quickly act with hate.

When and to whom was this alleged beatdown delivered? Vids? Precursor actions? Sounds like more fake BS.

The only real hate is the intolerance of the Left and their hate of the Constitution.

My guess is it was the pro Hamas demonstrator who got his arse whupped the day they used chalk paint on the gates at Toomers.

Plainsman has been like this for a while. They had a very similar editorial when Trump won in 2016. Ultimately, when you have journalism majors, who will more than likely be very left leaning students, surrounded by very overwhelmingly conservative student body, they are going to use this as their outlet to vent.

When I was was a student editorials in The Plainsman were about issues that impacted the University and student body as a whole. I remember Lee Davidson writing about Bobby Lowder's undue influence as head of the board of trustees and Lowder threatening to cut the paper's funding if she wasn't replaced as editor.

Again, Auburn is a large, public, land grant university in the deep south. By default the majority of students and the citizens of the surrounding area will be white conservatives. However, the student population is large enough that lgbt students, black students, Hispanic students, and international students can find and form peer groups that give them a very positive college experience and get a good education.

If, as a student, you want your college experience to be one where the students and faculty are overwhelmingly liberal and progressive attitudes and lifestyles are celebrated and on full display, you probably should choose another institution of higher learning...one that is most likely some combination of private, in a large urban area, or not in the Bible Belt.

No, I think he's saying don't come to Auburn expecting Berkley, just as a good ol' boy from south AL should roll out to Berkley looking for Auburn.

Auburn has always been among the most conservative campuses/student bodies relative to other southern universities. That's nothing new.

I still think a minority student can have a wonderful experience as a student at Auburn, but that's just based on my anecdotal experience, YMMV.

Exactly. One of the many things I love about Auburn is that you are able to get the full SEC large school experience without having to be a certain type of person, as opposed to say a Bama or Ole Miss where you are either in the Greek system or you are considered a second class student by a good many people.

But you have to know the demographics of the school/town and if they fit with your personal beliefs. If they don't, you can't go crying about it when they don't change. It would be like getting pissed because Byron's Smokehouse has never had Kung Pao Shrimp on their menu, don't have it on their menu now, and have no plans to add it in the future.

I don’t know what the author expected from Auburn, as you’ve expressed, however…

It’s a college student’s editorial in a college newspaper: who cares? It not the first or last pointless editorial that’s appeared in The Plainsman. It means nothing about Auburn students as a whole.

Cynthia Tucker used to write the same kind of articles in the 1990s.

We also laughed at the articles.

As a foreigner and a person of color who came to AU two weeks before 9/11 and spent 4 yrs there, I never had one bad experience anywhere on campus. Neither did my large circle of close friends in my community. No one tried to baptize us or pulled us into Bible studies and I always felt like if I just minded my own business, I had a good time. Pizza Beer and good company was free flowing throughout my time and it never felt like it was some uber conservative place with religious zealots.

All of this are just emotional reactions to the elections. I am uber liberal but the country has spoken and they want to shift the direction we are headed so I accept and reconcile with it and move on and just live my life in the best way I can.
