He gave me some of the greatest memories in Auburn football. I have watch Pat and Terry to Bo and Brent to Caddy and Ronnie. He almost always had us in the playoff talk in Nov and Dec. 5 of his 7 years before this one we were in the top 10 and in the talk. That is pretty amazing being we play the hardest schedule anywhere. What coach around the country can say that. What coach could do that. I hope we find one that can.

We thanked Gus with 50 MM dollars.

I hated Gus as a coach but he was a great man. Him dancing after beating pitiful Mississippi State didn’t make sense then, but he was doing it for his players, one last time.
I saw a video of him cleaning out his office and it kinda choked me up. The end of the era.He needed to be fired, but I wish it didn’t have to be that way. Especially if we are just going to hire Steele.

He gave me a few good memories, ulcers, and a borderline drinking problem

Agreed on all accounts

Said it at the time, and I’ll still say it: 2013 was my favorite season ever in 50+ years following AU football. Even though we fell 13 seconds short of an NC.
I’ll always be grateful to Gustav for guiding that team through all the ups and downs.

He was above average with some great moments.
I don’t hate him, but he had his chance.
Time to move on and give someone else the chance to lead us to the promised land.
Good luck to Gus.
Enjoy the money.

He gave me more negative memories than great ones. I don't know if it's true that he always had his team in the playoff talk but I do know every season since his first has included at least 4 losses.
He was one of the most frustratingly stubborn coaches I can remember.

Yeah Gus needed to go. A lot of folks in this thread and others referencing Gus and his money. No, his results didn’t warrant his payday, but that contract is ALL on Leath. You could also blame Sexton but he’s just doing his job. Let’s stop pretending Gus is some sort of charlatan and put blame where it belongs.

You should probably prepare yourself. The next coach and all the coaches before him, had pretty much the same record. Like it or not, it is what Auburn has always been.
The big difference Gus gave you was hope for a better thing due to improved recruiting and the big moments that we all enjoyed so much. Lets hope and pray that the new coach can bring us the highs that Gus did. The lows will always be there. Unfortunately

"due to improved recruiting'
He started strong but the last few years haven't been up to those first few years. But recruiting matters little when the final product was so inconsistent.
The big moments were also very problematic. So many times Gus won big games with ridiculous wing and a prayer moments. Yes they're memorable but I'd rather my team not have to rely on miracles for the occasional big win.

Same here. I think I reached the peak of my drinking problem around 2015-2016

So true man. Who would say no to that contract extension? It like he held a gun to their heads. My main issue with Gus was our record against our biggest rivals on the road. Uga has no business beating us even in auburn every year.
Out of all the other Sec coaches Gus was the only one who gave saban fits so that’s a complement but he lost too many other winnable games and had poor Olines nearly every year. Not to mention how he would destroy every QB we got. I’d have a beer with him anyway but I just don’t want him coaching AUBURN anymore.

Are you Mrs Malzahn?
You’re such a little tender bitch.

A lot of people need to take a reality check.
Auburn is historically, roughly an 8-4 -ish program -- punctuated by the periodic memorable season.
We just fired the coach that was an instrumental part of 3 of those memorable seasons -- including the only National Championship we've won in most of our lifetimes, and a second NC appearance.
I agree that Gus had reached his ceiling here, and that we all want to take the next step. But if you are going to fire him, you have to hire a clear upgrade.
And you have to thank Gus for raising the bar, in spite of facing the most difficult competition an Auburn coach has ever had to face.

Mine too. I loved 2010, don't get me wrong, but to come off of the 2012 season and win games like we did was magical. I will always be thankful for Gus for those memories even though I know he needs to go.

As a student from 2010-2014, I can say without a doubt that 2013 was so much more fun and memorable than 2010. Great take.
