Our best shooters are leaving. What the hell?

Good. No offense, I like the kid, but this was mutually the best thing to happen. Roster wise though, we have no natural 1’s or 2’s other than Alexander

I’d rather keep him than have the roster spot.

Is what it is. Just going to continue to be more common

If we get Zep, it’s a massive upgrade

Yeah but we didn’t need to lose JJ to land Zep and they’re different players.

Right but we are also in the mix for the 2 Penn State guys

I guess my point is that he was a productive role guy and those guys are valuable. I’m not losing sleep over him leaving but we’re probably better off with him than without him. That’s just my opinion, though.

Sky isn’t falling and nothing is on fire but I’d like some of the bench pieces to stay for 4 years

Jamal transferring is strange. Unless he’s pulling a TJ Lang and transferring to a school like USF, he’s not going to start.

I’d have liked him fine as a bench piece but I’m sure he was disappointed they don’t view him as a starter. So I guess we kind of agree.

I don’t think he’s a starter either. The downside to the level of recruiting/evaluating/development that we’re at is that most of these guys think they can play more

Blue bloods have dealt with this for a while now. We’re starting to experience some of it

The thing that hurts most from this transfer won’t necessarily be the points (he averaged 9 per game), but it’s the continuity and team chemistry. I think this hurts more than what the stat sheet will suggest

Team chemistry of a unhappy player is probably suspect at best ...depending on how mature he may be.

All I know is if this means Flanigan is playing the 2 then I might not be able to watch.. I'm already losing enough hair as it is.

The 2 and the 3 are virtually indistinguishable for us except for who they guard in the other end. They do the same thing in the Pearl offensive system

A decent breakdown that was found on rivals:

Remaining scholarship players:

Devan Cambridge (G)
Allen Flannigan (G/F)
Jaylin Williams (F)
Dylan Cardwell (C)
Stretch (C)
Thor (F/C)
Chris Moore (F)

Up in the air:
Sharife Cooper (PG)
Javon Franklin (F)

Transferred:
Turbo Jones (G)
Jamal Johnson (G)
Justin Powell (G)

Incoming:
Jabari Smith (F)
Trey Alexander (G)

Scholarships available:
4 if Coop and Javon both transfer
3 if Coop stays and Javon leaves
2 if both choose to stay (unlikely)

Depth Chart (assuming no Coop since everyone is leaning that way):

PG - none
SG - Devan Cambridge / Trey Alexander
SF - Flanny / CMo
PF - Jabari / Jaylin Williams
C - Thor / Cardwell / Stretch

Unless we get someone in or Alexandre is legit we are going to struggle at the 2 and with shooting in particular. The reason I don't want Flanigan at the 2 is because that's usually your best scorer... I truly cannot take seeing Flanigan barely crossing half court and jacking up a 3 like he's Steph Curry while air balling. I want him to have as little scoring responsibility as possible. If he's our 3rd scoring option, great. If he's our top scoring option.. then we will be looking at another year like this past season imo.

I just don’t understand why after 2 years and now his 2nd college he wants to transfer again into another new program.

Is it bc Pearl wouldn’t guarantee him a starting position ? Or he doesn’t want to play PG at all.
Any scuttlebutt? Where are all our ‘inside’ guys? :)

I disagree on Flanigan. His improvement from year 1 to year 2 was impressive. If he makes another noticeable leap he has a chance to be an All-SEC type guy and could be our leading scorer. He had a solid but inconsistent year. I think you are just frustrated with him because of how nauseating it was to watch him play point guard

Agreed. I think he struggles way more when he’s the primary ball handler vs being expected to be our primary scorer. By the end of the year he seemed to have learned how to score without the ball which is really promising. I don’t think we will see near the leap we saw from last year to this year (if we did then he’s an all American ) but it’s clear he’s willing to put in the work in the off season and get better.

Our front court should be very good next year with the length, athleticism, and ability to stretch the floor between Thor, Jabari, and Jaylin, plus having a guy like Cardwell who should continue to become a force down low. It’s just a matter of can we find the scorers we need.
