Honest answers? Two major considerations
Their losses were in OT to top 15 teams and almost 2 months ago. Auburn got run out of the gym by 2 non t25 teams inside the last month.
In a top 5-10 team, people excuse a bad game but they expect them to typically take care of business. AU hasn't done that. In the past 10 games, AU has more OT games (3) than double digit wins (2) despite playing ~4 teams who may not even make the NIT.
Even in score sheet "close games" Dayton has been firmly in control under 10 minutes left in 20 / 23 games based on KenPom win%. That's "taking care of business"

That's a fair critique, but I think you are giving pollsters too much credit.
I tend to think it's because they looked really good in a high profile preseason tournament AKA passed the eye test and we don't.

quote:Seton Hall beat Nova (who was ahead of us in 1 poll & right behind in the other) on the road this week. The Hall were right behind us in both polls & jumped us with that win. Nobody else in front of us lost this week so there was no room to move up.
A road win over Arkansas and home win over LSU drops us a spot in the coaches poll. Now 11th in both polls. Go figure.

quote:A game which Dayton was in control of the entire way. Also their 2 losses were to ranked teams & earlier in the season. Gives them more time to slide up the polls. They still have 3 tough games left (2 with Rhode Island & 1 at VCU) so we'll see how they pan out.

Is it the close loss vs Kansas?

But zero marquee wins is the weird thing. We have a better Q1 record and better Q2 record.

quote:Marginally. If they beat URI this week we will be tied there.
We have a better Q1
quote:Yes but neither team has a Q2 loss so that is basically cancelled out. Again the stronger competitive losses to Kansas & the Buffs is a difference maker with our blowout losses to worse teams. That combined with what Gene said & there really isn't an argument for AU to be ranked higher than Dayton as of now.

Except the two marquee wins (read: wins vs ranked teams) which usually is what makes the difference in the eyes of AP Poll and Coaches Poll. Especially when one of them is a blueblood.
Also Dayton vs Rhode Island is @Dayton. Won't be a Q1 opportunity for them.

quote:That's not going to trump a team in the polls who hasn't lost in over 7 weeks & again who has 2 losses to better teams & much more competitive in those games. Also on the blue blood part, While UK looks to be coming on strong they weren't considered an elite team so far this season because of dropping games @ SC & an inexcusable loss at home to Evansville. As further evidence of them not being seen as an elite team so far this season they are generally seen as a 4 or 5 seed now in projections.

quote:Splitting hairs. They are 1 below the Q1 cut line. They could easily be in the Q1 by the time the game is played, & if not, still has a very real shot of sliding in the top 30 with a loss given Dayton is #5 in the NET giving them a SOS boost. I'm starting to think there's an anti Anthony Grant bias being shown in this discussion.

Not at all. I like Anthony Grant, thought his term at Bama ended prematurely. I actually coached his son for a summer.
They just haven't beaten anyone worth a damn.

A twitter thread by Jesse Newell explaining his decision on why he put Auburn at 24 this week.

Right because the two surely can't be correlated...

. . . maybe next year the votes will be given to the best journalist not merely the most awarded.

If jewell is consistent with his rankings then i have no problem with it. I prefer independent thought over herd mentality

Overlooking resume to focus on team strengths just seems to be missing the point of it all.
