Practice observation posted by Stephen Hooks on ITAT.
This week was the first week of allowed practice during the summer semester. I wanted to see several things.
1. How was the mood of the kids this early as they prepare for what could be a historic season.
2. How had the staff changes affected the culture or chemistry.
3. How had the player additions and subtractions changed the chemistry of the team.
4. Any other observations good or bad.
Practice was divided into bigs and smalls. All smalls took the court first while bigs stayed in the locker room. Coaches present were Wes Flanigan and Chad Prewit. CBP was not present. I spoke with almost all the smalls as they took the court before practice and 100% were in great moods. They had enjoyed time off and all seemed very excited about the upcoming season. Bryce gave me a really nice insight into his Hawks workout. He seemed to really thrive on the positive feedback he received. I get the feeling that he and Jarred picked up a personal boost by their workouts and feedback.
First major thought. Man I like Wes Flanigan. Tough, disciplined, worked out with the kids in all drills. Wes ran the entire practice as if it was his team. He is oozing with skills that the kids are really responding to. He took zero crap yet was able to keep the kids motivated and laughing at times. From this two hours observing he looks to be a home run hire for CBP. He is the kind of assistant CBP needs. I see him able to reach many of these kids deeply while instilling team discipline. We shall see how he can recruit etc etc but so far so good. One final thought on this. Coach Adler who I am very close to gives Wes the highest praise since he arrived.
Daniels was great and the kids listen to him as well. There was a drill where both Flanigan and Daniels were playing and it was delightful to watch. Having two former relatively young fit AU legends on the staff I think will pay off in spades.
Secondly, our kids look sharp. All look like they have taken very little time away from the weight room and the skills practices. Chuma, Samir, Bryce, Austin, Horace and Jarrod looked really sharp. Jeez our starting lineup and first several off the bench are really going to be special together. I will also add Samir has a very special personality. He is vocal, funny and seriously encouraging to his fellow teammates. He stood out as a leader. The kind of fun loving vocal guy you desperately want on a team. Oh and him being a straight up baller doesn't hurt either......
Purifoy had some rust which does not surprise me in the slightest. The kids has so much natural talent that often he is lazy as he has always been able to excel with little effort. He was not remotely as hard working in his mandatory off year as was Austin. He will be fine but he's a step slow and rusty but will be fine by season start.
Jamal Johnson has a LONG way to go. I don't know what Tubby was doing with kids development when he was at Memphis but Jamal seemed to receive little as his body shows little signs of an intensive weight program etc. Luckily he is not eligible so he has a full year to improve in all areas of his game if he ever wants to see game time at AU.
Overall it was a very positive experience. I have seen many a year of these and this one left me most impressed in al areas. Long way to go but foundations are in place. Kids seem to grasp whats possible and we have one great new assistant coach and one great new GA.

J'Von McCormick, one of the top junior college point guards in the country, has committed to Auburn. Big, big addition at a position of need for Bruce Pearl and the Tigers.

That's a comfy 10 man rotation. I'm stoked.

Yep. Definitely filled a need. Ferguson also says that he is available immediately and has two years of eligibility.

J’Von McCormick averaged 18.5 PPG, 5.3 RPG and 6.4 APG while shooting 36.4% from 3 for Lee College (TX) last season.
The Tigers really needed a second PG on their roster with Jared Harper. He’s an important pickup.

Here are his sophomore stats from JUCO LINK
Things that stick out:
Took the most shots in the entire conference shooting at 41%
2nd in assists / 1st in turnovers
Good rebounder and defender (5.5 RPG & almost 2 SPG)
64.8% FT shooter
Should be a good addition as long as he's willing to accept his role.

Sounds like he’s not a good shooter, and plays a little out of control. Hopefully, the defense is solid. Considering he’s the backup, that’s not too concerning

Outside of free throws, he's not bad. Almost 43% from the field, 36% from 3pt. That is plenty good.

Considering Harper was like 35% from both those categories, yea I'll take that off the bench too

This is about the best we could have hoped for from the JC or GT market. Quick 3rd hand scouting report I got on him was he is athletic enough to contribute, good defender and he has a good handle. His assists to turnover ratio is a little concerning but he did play for an extremely bad team and at times tried to do too much. Overall should fill the need and give Harper 10-15 minutes rest.

Agreed. He was clearly the best player on a very bad team. He shouldn't have to force things as much here, which should help the assists to TO ratio. He is exactly what we need, if he can clean that up and accept his role this season. He will still be a threat to score, so when he is in, he will still have to be guarded. Great pick up IMO.

Good coaching should help with that. Hopefully anyway.

NBPA: Tandy beginning to look hard at his recruitment (247)
Feels like the Peal recruiting machine is starting to get rolling again
quote:
One of the more explosive guards capable of putting up big scoring numbers in the class of 2019 is Dekeyvan Tandy. The native of Kentucky had a solid first day at the NBPA Top 100 Camp, and he is beginning to take a serious look at his recruitment.
About getting an invitation to the prestigious camp, Tandy said, “It is a blessing to be here. People from my state don’t get this opportunity often, so I am going to take advantage of it and learn everything that I can.”
When asked what he is trying to show at the camp, Tandy responded, “For me, I know I am a scoring point guard and I need to pass more. This weekend I am trying to show that I can set up my teammates and run plays, and that I can play point guard at the next level.”
On the recruiting trail, several schools are really beginning to lock in on Tandy.
“Iowa State, Tennessee, Cincinnati, Auburn and a lot of other schools as well,” said Tandy.
Iowa State Head Coach Steve Prohm spent time at Murray State, which is near where Tandy lives, and the two have a familiarity. Now Tandy says it is good to be recruited by Prohm, and that he feels the system fit in Ames is a good one.
“Their message is that they want me bad,” explained Tandy of Iowa State. “(Prohm) knows that I can play there, and that he would let me play my game. For me, I want to go to a college that I would have the freedom to play ball, and Iowa State is the kind of place that will let you be you.”
Another school making Tandy a real priority is Cincinnati. Head Coach Mick Cronin has personally spent a lot of time recruiting Tandy, and this has made a big impression on him.
“They are really on me a lot,” noted Tandy. “I need to visit there. I am going to visit there because that is the head coach that is recruiting me the hardest. It is a school I could definitely see myself fitting in.”
Picking things up recently is Auburn. The Tigers have a family connection to Tandy, and they have really begun to ramp up the interest.
“Auburn has really been recruiting me hard,” noted Tandy. “That is the school that has been talking to me the most since they offered. They just had a real good season and were at the top of the SEC, and my cousin, Scotty Hopson, played for Coach (Bruce) Pearl, so it could be a good fit as well.”
For now Tandy says he is in no hurry to make a decision. He had hoped to make some unofficial visits in June, but that doesn’t seem likely, so now the plan is to make official visits during the fall before making his decision.

Also Trendon Watford just got a ton of CBs to Memphis which makes me happy considering Bama was thought to be team to beat for much of his recruitment
