Question regarding OL play

Its been repeated, and rightfully so, the interior of the line struggled with stunts and twists.
Two of the three played for years together at USF.
Our center is supposed to be well schooled and he is the one calling blocking assignments at the line.
Our defense in practice the last year certainly showed them these same looks many times.
So why the confusion? Im not expecting them to blow holes in the line, but how can you keep missing who you are supposed to at least stand in front of to prevent 11 tackles for a loss.
The good news is, if they are telling OL recruits they can play early.....they aint lying

Baylor’s DC stated, they spent a bundle to get them, then spent all fall putting together a plan to defeat Auburn.
This Auburn mindset has a condition at Auburn since Gus. But seldom has a DC put together a dedicated scheme designed to beat the opening opponent.

Understand that. But Golesh talked about preparing for opponents in this new era and they look at the opponent's film, the coaches film from their previous stop, the players from their previous stop.
Just seems our OL should have had better awareness.
I will say some of those sacks were "coverage" sacks or Brown just did not find open receivers, he held the ball for quite a while many times.
The issue I saw was the lack of being able to run the ball. Course part of that goes back to the fact we were not stretching the field much in the passing game.
Course thats why the coaches make the big bucks, lets hope they earn it.

The left guard was particularly helpless. I remember Plazz getting a lot of love in the off-season. Might be time to see what he can do.

That sounds a lot like coping.

I took it as a skill issue and Baylor just being better than us on the interior. It sounded like they knew their assignments but were just too slow. Am I off the mark?

Our tackles did great last game which is a surprise in itself. It is the tackles, not the guards with a the most tape of getting turnstiled.

Offensive lines used to develop within a program. Bring in 18 year old. Maybe they graduate HS early, go through spring/fall/winter workouts/ second spring/fall/workout/third spring/start as RS sophomore in fall. We all knew their names and hometowns back then.
Now with NIL/portal, it’s develop now or leave- from player and coach point of view.
It must be really bad in G5. Any player with decent tape will move up to P4.

Outside of QB, they are the most important group on the field. And there just isn't enough of them. You can't stack a whole roster full anymore.

Gus formed his schemes on a specific style offensive line player. Auburn linemen weren't'’t taken in the NFL.
Since that moment in time…..Harsin, then Freeze added to the collapse. By not correcting the situation. You simply don’t go to Auburn to be an offensive lineman.

They weren't the problem. The LG Jacob Strand was the worst rated lineman out of all of the lineman to play.

A mediocre QB can win given enough help from the rest of his squad. As evidenced by our past QBs blossoming elsewhere. Seems to me it takes a far better QB to make a bad OL look good than it does the other way around.
Although I might go with DL in order of importance.... using that old adage about D's winning championships and the O winning games.

Not OL related but DL...
Where in the world is Joe Phillips? Is he hurt or something because he was third on the depth chart when it came out due to JJ being injured.
When Womack and Murray got hurt we had absolutely no one to rush the passer bc Jared dropped back in coverage 30 times and Sigler wasn't getting it done on the edge.

Joe Phillips just never seemed to turn the corner on development. If they had to put in another person I would wonder if they used Riddick on the edge or even put in Jaquez Wilkes.
On the OL, I realize Strand graded the worst but the other two were not much better. Lots of others on the bench Im certain there will be some shuffling this Saturday to get things right. Least I hope so.
Reminds me of Daytona many years ago, Rusty Wallace leading most of the race and there is about 20 laps to go, his pit said ya got enough gas to finish, Dale Earnhardt pitted, took a gulp of gas two tires and made it back out on the track, and he gained and he gained, on the last lap Rusty recollected and said....
Your worst nightmare, running on fumes, four bald tires.....and Dale popped up in my rear view mirror.....this aint gonna end pretty.

They put on the Auburn uniform.
I don't know why but we've had piss poor o line play for most of the last 15 years.

When we ran offenses that were about controlling the line of scrimmage rather than trying to scheme around it, we had pretty good lines.

For sure.
I think we got scared as a program when Saban started dominating recruiting. It's why we went with Tony Franklin and then Gus. We wanted innovative offenses instead of relying on pure skill and talent.
I don't think that's a bad move necessarily, but you still need to compete in recruiting.
