I keep seeing people saying that they've been broken by Gus, and that's cool....but....

You weren't broken by Chizik? Tubs? Bowden? Only Gus broke the fanbase?

Gus has been directly involved with 2 NC runs, 3 SECC runs, 2 Heisman finalist, 1 Heisman winner....but he broke the fanbase?

This isn't a Gus suckoff...I'm just wondering what Gus has done worse than the others?

Ya we haven’t quite had a 12 or 08 season yet so I don’t get that saying either.

It boggles the mind. I think some of our fans read tRant more than they should. Gus has had some head scratchers. But I have had as much fun watching some of his games as any in my life..............and I am an old dude.

People live in the here and now with little revisionist history. It’s really that simple

Honestly, I think it's cause he is so close to being great, but just can't quite get there. It inspires a more passionate anger upon failure than if he just kinda settled into mediocrity like other coaches we have had.

Sure, but I think most of us can admit that outside of 2013 and 2017 being an Auburn fan isn't very fun under Gus. Getting mauled by your rivals and/or losing winnable games against teams we care about (LSU, Clemson, UGA) is a drag.

I'm not sure if it is accurate, but it "feels" like the SEC is now usually 1-3 good teams and everyone else can't compete with them, whereas it felt like in the CTT era the Big 6 (and beyond) could knock each other off in given years regardless of who was at the top of the order in a given year. Arguably that made average years more enjoyable.

I think it’s more his personality mixed in with him having what the heck moments losing when he shouldn’t and his stubbornness on adapting. His personality doesn’t attract people. For example Tubs has an attractive personality that he’s made himself into a person that even Bama fans will vote for senator. I couldn’t see Gus having that kissing babies Politician like personality.

I think this is pretty close. With the accuracy of recruiting rankings now compared to the early 2000s, there is much less parody in the league. Teams like UGA and Bama who consistently finish in the top 3 in recruiting every year are going to be perennial contenders no matter what. Teams like A&M, Florida, and Auburn who typically finish middle of the pack in terms of recruiting rankings in the SEC will end up going 8-5, 9-4 etc every year.

Teams like UGA and Bama just don’t get upset

I will take that bet.

I am as big a Tub fan as there is..............but he had an abrasive/smug personality.

Most politicians are that way and Tubs can put on a face for anybody. JMO what we see with Gus is what we get. I don’t see him as the guy putting on different faces for different people just to seem more likeable.

His offense has broken me. I get great joy in watching our defense play. Watching our offense i'm always saying to myself what mickey mouse triple fake reverse is coming next.

I just want a pro-style offense that spreads the ball around, makes qbs look good, makes wr's look good, etc.

Agreed. And it doesn't just apply to Auburn. If LSU-Bama is one sided or UGA has no competitors in the East it just makes the season less interesting.

I find that to be a SEC problem, not an Auburn problem.

And besides....WHO WILL WE GET THAT IS BETTER??

I think it’s a combo of things. Tubbs coached against a much inferior ‘Bama and an SEC at more parity. Chizik honestly wasn’t around long enough to break a fan base, IMO. But I agree with auburnnyc. To me, Gus gets a more passionate anger because I think some fans (not all, as this board clearly shows) think he could be great based on his best seasons and consistent recruiting, but when he does head scratcher things or is stubborn beyond belief, they rage because of wasted potential.

I agree with Pettifogger.

Some years we are soooo close and gives us hope for the future. But then the next year, we get gang raped by our rivals. Apologies to any gang rape victims out there .... looking at you Prison Mike.

His offense is very much a high school offense in that it relies on scheming players open. He's counting on being able to reliably get 3-4 yards on the dive play against a balanced defensive front, and then to be able to outsmart the opposition via scheme once they adjust to that. And that's really hard to do at this level.

If you watch Clemson and Bama and Oklahoma and OSU it's more scheming your best players in position to make plays even when the defense is in decent position. They count on winning 1 on 1 battles.

Well it's an Auburn problem if we're only infrequently part of the top group.

I laid out some thoughts yesterday about why Gus may be more replaceable than one initially assumes. To be clear, I'm not convinced this year is the time to make a change nor am I eager to do so. This is theoretical and I'm holding out hope that we can grab 9-10 wins this season.

But is it really that high of a hurdle to replace 8.7ish wins/year (8.2 over the last 5) at Auburn? I'm not sure it is. Kids are about to start school who've never seen Auburn lose fewer than 4 games in a season.

We're paying close to top dollar for very, very pedestrian results with the occasional highly competitive year. And as previously mentioned, we fell off a cliff in 2017. If we have a mediocre year this year, as understandable as that is with our schedule, it's going to seem like a very long time since 12 wins in 2013.

Well, no. The difference between Gus and a lot of college coaches is that he rarely puts it on his players to win a one on one.
