You and me both. He was a 4* guess he didn't have the best hips. Telling about the two guys we brought in with Keys and Tolan.

Well we are somewhere around 90, we have a handful still to come in the fall and we want another handful in the portal so we will need to hit that magical 85, see 12-15 hit the portal.

We knew it would be like this for the next couple of years til we get the quality layered in.

Let me clarify first that I’m not advocating that these guys go, but wouldn’t be shocked if they hit the portal or even CHF asks them to move on:

Tj
Sean Jackson
Fromm, Deal, or Frazier
Chick Dawson
MJJr
Dylan Brooks
Craig McDonald

Probably gonna have to process some reserve OL and DL just to get space, but will make us even more scary thin there.

Probably see multiple DBs entering the portal, since that’s the most loaded room.

I can't believe he hasn't transferred already

I think Freeze put him in the portal himself when he threw into triple coverage Saturday.

He only hasn’t because he’d have had to sit a year. I’m kind of surprised he went through the spring with the team though.

You would think he can see the writing on the wall…

Once he graduates he can transfer without having to sit. And he is on scholly, so he is probably given a pass til he finishes school. Think about it this way, we bounce the kid, he loses his scholly and is mid semester of graduating, that would be a pretty shatty thing to do, with no reason to do so, we have til fall to get to the 85.

This whole 85 limit, gray shirt, purple shirt, fushia shirt stuff, more complicated than quantum physics to figure out.

Hell, with NIL what is stopping someone just paying for their schooling and have more than 85 “scholarship” players

Nothing if you're good enough to get considerable NIL. I've always thought it will be interesting if that starts happening. If we were at 85 and had some 5* wanting to transfer, pay him NIL and he can pay his own tuition. Simple as that, and the 85 becomes a soft cap.

In this case though, not sure TJ is going to have substantial NIL deals coming his way.

I believe they have to be on scholly to play specifically to stop that. Otherwise you could have a whole other team "off the books". literally the ole days of Bear Bryant, and just shuffle in ones who perform and shuffle out those that arent on a game by game basis, like injured reserve in the pros.

I also like Freeze keeping the NIL at arms length. I could very easily see a booster like some QB in the portal, pony up the money specifically for him and then wear out the coach on putting the guy in, even if he was not performing.

Between NIL and the portal this thing is like Medusa's head.

I agree with a lot of these. However no way Deal is processed. If he leaves it will be purely on him. He's going to get plenty of play this season.

Other things depends on some of what we do get in the portal. I could see Stutts and Irvin possibly testing the waters. I could see Austin Ausberry leaving. Okoli not sure what his role is. Asante could jump to a lower division if he's not in the top 5 linebackers and I'm not sure he is.

I think we have to cut 7 to be at 85. Plus we need some transfers to provide quality depth.

So My List would look something like this...

TJ
Frazier
Dawson
King
Johnson Jr
Brooks
McDonald
Asante
Ausberry
Okoli
Irvin

maybe Stutts

Sean Jackson and Levant moving back to PWO status. Where they can train and eat with the team.

That would open up 13 spots without Stutts leaving.

Auburn has contacted a few Qbs, Chance Nolan (been in the portal since December)

Casey Thompson from Nebraska is a name to watch as well.

Wonder why Thompson’s numbers got worse last season. I didn’t watch any Nebraska games.

Nolan had good numbers in 2021 (. 2600 yds 19 TD vs 10 int) but 2022 was hurt in 5th game and out the rest of the season. Ended with 8 TD vs 9 picks. 54% completion vs 2021 about 60% I can’t remember exact.

Didn’t Casey Thompson already take his free transfer from Texas? Wouldn’t he need a waiver or drop down to FCS?
