I'm not a big fan of Thorne, but he does have a decent arm. Just don't know if he really moves the needle much but I guess a trade of him for Finley is fine.
He threw for 3,200 yards, 27 TD's, with 4 rushing TD's in 2021 on a P5 team.
Doesn't move the needle much? What are these posts lol? Our QB's are Oregon's former 3rd/4th stringer who couldn't break 50% completion last season, a completely unproven redshirt freshman, and LSU's former 3rd stringer who just finally left lol.
Payton Thorne moves the needle a lot.

He left Michigan State because 1 WR got drafted and 1 transferred out, and realized he had nobody to throw to. Who on our roster would he be excited about?

Nice to see that you didn't use his 2022 stats and conveniently left out that he threw an INT in almost every game he has played. That is a problem so I can see why people are not that hyped with him...

Doesn't auburn have 12 qb guru coaches on staff? Maybe they can work they shite out!

JUCO OL Markell Bell is set to visit next weekend.

I’m not in love with Thorne but that whole offense went to hell last season after Kenneth Walker III went pro
Sadly, we don’t have to be excited about a QB for them to be an upgrade over the current options

I didn't use his 2022 stats because it turns out that he was playing through multiple injuries for much of the season. You can easily look this up yourself.
But if you want to play that game; his "down" 2022 stats are still better than any of Bo Nix's seasons at Auburn. This was an ~8 win team under Bo Nix even with poor supporting talent.
Thorne's passer rating in 2022 was 131.2. Robby Ashford last season? 107.0.
So again, this is a massive upgrade even if you want to conclude that 2022 was his "actual" talent level. The initial post I was responding to made the claim that this doesn't move the needle. I guess that depends on what you think moving the needle entails. Does this make Auburn a Playoff contender? No, this team is far too weak to play at that level regardless of who the QB is. However, to make the claim that this isn't a MASSIVE upgrade from Ashford/Finley is truly moronic. This is a highly successful P5 starter with a ton of experience. Robby Ashford was Oregon's 3rd string QB even before Nix transferred there lol.
By the way, Thorne has attempted nearly 400 pass attempts in each of the past two seasons. His interceptions are relative. It's not the best ball-security, but this isn't a guy who is attempting 250 passes a season. Interceptions are a part of challenging the defense through the air.

Do you think the QB playing through injury has any impact on the offense? Or is it just the RB leaving lol.

Freeze and Montgomery would get him to improve, which is what is needed to showcase to future QB recruits. I agree he is a massive upgrade to the current QB room, that shouldn't be a point anyone argues

And Thorne has two years.
Plenty of time to get Walker White ready

I think it’s a mixture of both. Injuries/Walker leaving. Luckily we have a pretty good RB room playing behind him.
He’s a huge upgrade over anything we currently have on campus.

I don’t know his life story so frick off, prick
Just pointing out he didn’t have much to work with last season

That’s the takeaway. Every QB after a bad season has injuries reported afterward. Welcome to football. That’s the narrative around Ashford currently
Don’t know if he was hurt last year but it sounds like he’s healthy right now. That’s the biggest ding on Thompson right now. Walker leaving really handcuffed that offense and Tucker seems lost trying to sort it out.
But yeah, these guys are better than what we have so I don’t see why why it matters what was causing Thorne to regress

Auburn fans are an insufferable bunch.
Still haven't grasped that they have a 3rd string tard as the incumbent starter, and here we are, a near ~30 TD, 3,000 yard passer with almost ~800 pass attempts over the past two seasons "doesn't really move the needle"
. He threw too many interceptions?
A P5 team won 11 games with this QB. He was very good in 2021 (advanced stats back this) and even if you want to claim he regressed (hurt or not), his 2022 season is better than anything Auburn has fielded at QB in recent memory.
There is always something with Auburn fans. We actually could have had Casey Thompson last season, but the argument from quite a few was that he wasn't good enough and why would we want a guy who got pushed out at Texas?

Not really.
The narrative around Ashford is that he was buried on Oregon's depth chart for two seasons, would have been buried on Auburn's depth chart had Calzada not been injured, looked bad for all of fall camp last season causing him to lose to TJ Finley (ie: well before any injury took place), and even looked underwhelming his SR year of HS (hence why he dropped from 4-star to 3-star).
The difference here is that you actually have a full P5 season of well above-average performance over nearly ~400 pass attempts.
Ashford may have been hurt, but even prior to being hurt what was he? He was a 3rd string QB who got pushed onto the field due to unforeseen circumstances.

I agreed with you but did so with a different reason and you still busted out the holier than thou/know-it-all routine. Lighten up and take a deep breath and you might realize you’re one of the dickheads you hate
