So wait for weeks after the season ends while he goes through the Playoffs for the off-handed privilege of playing fourth-wheel between LSU, Ole Miss, and Florida for his services? For a guy who already turned you down once?

What could go wrong!

This is how you end up with Charles Kelly as your backup panic hire.

Lashlee just got a contract extension at SMU. He's not going anywhere.

Seems to me, reading what PSU fans say, Franklin is a very good guy but he can't coach.

I really don't think that's the problem. There are a lot of successful coaches running that "style". We do need to find a HC that isn't allergic to being physical and running the ball. We need a HC that can find somebody who can develop a QB.

We gave freeze everything he wanted. We hired him because he beat saban years ago. It was just a bad hire.

For God's sake, no! No more lining up in the shotgun short yardage. No more either throw to the sideline or deep post as our route tree. No more stupid blocking schemes. No more wildcat. No more constant need for the "dual threat" QB.

Get an adaptable offense, hire a coach who can run an organized, physical program and fill our off-field ranks with pro level scouting and analysis.

My one wish is no more coaches who wear visors.

It’s definitely part of the problem. It is an extremely limited passing scheme. We complain about how little we do certain things offensively. How is the scheme not part of the problem?

I like that Key is an OL coach; games are won in the trenches and our OL has sucked for about a decade now. Also, he’s not a play caller so he will hire the best OCs and DCs and let them do their jobs.

It isn't a problem for Lashlee and Drink. Dillingham is doing well with it. Oregon runs the same scheme now. The list could go on. It boils down to being able to develop a QB and play calling.

We need a guy that can surround himself with other good coaches. A guy that comes from the Saban/Petersen/Smart tree. Hell i think id take someone from the Cignetti tree. Somebody mentioned IUs OC and i think he should be vetted at the very least.

The importance of coordinators and position coaches goes understated and that comes from a guy with connections.

If you want to go young with a guy like Schumann I hope the AD is ready to pay top dollar for an OC/QB coach and playcaller for him. Id be wary of his individual connections, but that can be remedied.

Sumrall doesnt excite me

Drink is a hard no

Im not convinced Lane isn't just albino james franklin, would still probably be fine with both.

Schumann is interesting

Urban would bomb hard

Im higher on Mullen than most but AU QB guru juju scares me here

I would unapologetically take Gruden. Somebody's gonna kick the tires in the next few years and I feel like we're gonna wish it was us.

Charles Kelly means we failed miserably

It’s been a problem for them anytime they play anyone with a defense

Missouri also had a big turn around once they brought in Kirby Moore. And SMU hasn’t exactly been lighting it up this year either. Good win against Miami but we are talking about a 50ish ranked offense that is playing a cupcake schedule so far.

Lumping Gus offense in with Hugh is absurd.

Love or hate Gus' offense it was nothing like whatever the fug we watched the past 3 years from Hugh

Good for them. They lost at Wake Forest the week before, scoring 12 points. Their offense has been pretty pedestrian so far this year and they’ve played an absolutely cake walk schedule.

Yeah, I have never understood comparing freeze and Gus' O. They are nothing alike. freeze runs a finesse pass happy O. Gus is smash mouth/run it down your throat.

IF you are looking for a HC that never loses games to teams they should beat, you are going to live a miserable life. saban lost to lesser talented teams. You need a HC that can give you an advantage. Rhett has taken SMU and put them in the playoffs. Drink has made Mizzou a factor. Those two guys can coach their asses off........."scheme" be damned. That is exactly the kind of HC we need.

I think people forget why Gruden "resigned". How do you think that would go over in recruiting? Also, he hasn't done any college coaching since the 1980s and hasn't coached at all in 5 years.

That’s fine. It does nothing to counter the fact that the scheme has some glaringly bad weaknesses. Pretending that it isn’t an issue is silly. Lashlee has done an admirable job at SMU. I’ve never said one thing bad about him nor have I said I dislike him. Merely said that the offensive scheme is an issue, which is undeniable at this point.

They may both be good coaches but your examples, one had to completely hand his offense over to his OC and that’s when they started being competitive. The other, while definitely turned around SMU, did so playing a cake walk and even he, with a returning start QB, is having a lot of issues offensively. Neither of them is a home run, so someone making the argument they’d prefer to go another route that doesn’t involve the offensive system that has clearly been a part of our animal play for many years now, is not an unreasonable position.
