I have a feeling that this is really the year Gus is gone, usually by now the administration would have already came out to say Gus is our coach moving forward. They need to move fast being signing day is coming up.

I'm worried the answer is so obvious and clear cut (we're not buying out a winning coach in a pandemic for 21 million) that the administration thinks it's silly to release any statement of support. In their mind, there is nothing to address.

Who is everyone? We all knew it was only liberals screaming for a politically correct hire.

In fairness, he actually made way more sense (at the time) than 5-19....

I heard Charles cheerleading Gil the most, thankfully we ignored him.

Given how new HC’s work at Auburn, he probably would have also managed to have an incredible season or two just like the rest

I was lurking on ITAT at the time, there were a lot of “Why did we hire this loser when we could have had Turner Gill?” posts.

In fact I was of a similar mindset, until news broke that Chiz had hired Gustav as OC. Remember thinking that was a homerun at the time.

Seemed like it was up until 2015 or so.

I wasn't excited about either of them...We won because of Cam and a few others on that team..We almost lost some games that year...Good Run but big drop off...

It wasn’t a bold prediction per se, but with there being at least 900 on that thread and 99% celebrating his signing you really put yourself into the lion’s den.

Amazing how the truth stirs up Auburn folks at times.

But yeah it really grided their gears.

I am not sure what happened to Gus. He kept DC's constantly guessing and the opposing D on their heels. At some point he lost 3/4 of his playbook.

Nothing. The problem is he is running in the same plays he was running in 2009 and 2010. Only now Gus inability to scout and develop an OL and qb are showing through.

What is the exact date that Gus’ buyout drops to $21 million? The day after the regular season December 13th? Sometime in January?

He cashed in with a gimmick that has long been figured out, its really not that difficult to understand. Its not hard to look good when no one knows what you're doing. Rule changes with substitutions hurt too, but if you actually think about it, any offense that depends on "running plays fast" to operate is a complete gimmick to begin with. If you were to actually analyze his earlier offenes today, you'd see that there were already cracks showing. For example - that Chris Todd offense put up yards and points against weak teams, but was FAR less effective against every good team we faced that year. So even way back then before it was all figured out, his "tricks" were already considerably less effective against good opponents. Then, flash forward to the Cam and Marshall offenses - doesn't it seem strange that in both cases it took Malzahn literally ~3 games to even figure out what he had in his hands? That should have signalled that he's really not very good at even analyzing his own offensive roster - and we've seen that in one shape or another every year since then. Coaches who are truly "gifted" offensive minds don't show the level of inability to self-evaluate that Malzahn does. He also shows little to no ability to alter his offense depending on who he's playing - which is another thing that clearly proves that he faked his way to success.

He's like a guy who figured out a new opening strategy in chess that no one has seen before. Yeah - for a while it has people scrambling and making mistakes. Now everyone knows what he's doing and there is no counter response because in fact he's actually a pretty average chess player.
