is there such a thing as a throw away season?
Yes.
At this level (college) you are also a student. Getting your tuition covered. With your reasoning, teams like Vandy would not even get players. Pretty much every season is a throw away for them. They play for the love of the game and a scholly.
There are many great athletes in the NFL that never made it to the post season. Like Dick Butkus, Gayle Sayers, Takeo Spikes and Archie Manning.

I’d be interested if these types of upsets became more common after the transfer portal. Less talented teams with continuity and experience can outplay their recruiting rankings.

I don’t mind looking at positives (if any), but people who forget history usually repeat it. So I hope the team management takes a hard look at this loss, and learns from it enough to not repeat it. I just hope we don’t lay an egg when the University of New Mexico comes to town next year.

NMSU is good and would beat multiple SEC teams this year. At least 4 of them.
and its only cost us $30,000,000* worth of HC salary since 1/1/21 to get there
(* that is NOT counting Gustav’s buyout)

Hot Tub vetting and analysis has consequences.

So how many 4* do we have starting on offense right now? I think I heard 1.
I don't consider NMSU our worst loss. I think USF holds that title. NMSU is not a bad team. Kill is a very good coach and has his team going. Their Duel Threat QB Diego Pavia is not a bad QB and would take him over Thorne from his play this year.

I think a lot of the consternation is due to the fact that Freeze got his arse handed to him by the same team twice in a row with two different teams. One would think he would know better and prepare the team with more talent than Liberty the second time around.

I’d like to throw 2006 thUGA out there. They sucked and Auburn was primed to win the SEC and play for a natty.

If that is the stanky leg game then you are correct.

Wasn't that the year they got ranked in the top five at one point?

I don’t recall the stanky leg, but it was a home game. It was on Jefferson Pilot because everyone thought Auburn was just going to destroy them. Instead, it was a beat down. Bye bye playing for the SEC. Bye bye playing for the natty. We got to watch Florida (who we’d beaten) win both. That was the last straw with me and Tubs. The team looked shell shocked. I saw the same thing Saturday night.

Nope that isnt the stanky leg game. Stanky leg game is when Georgia turned their sidelines into a dance party and stanky leg was a prominent song.
I actually forgot about that pathetic 06 game. IIRC Brandon Cox threw interceptions early and often. Tuberville went soft with Cox he progressively got worse as the years went along.

You are right but I'm certain stanky leg was played.
I am still bitter about that game and we have done nothing but stick our asses up ever since.

That was the year the offense went stale under Borges.

Freeze is in year one and there has been zero maturation up to this point from a player, coaching, or team identity standpoint.
Does this reflect more on the players or on the coaching staff, including and especially the HC.
I have never seen an Auburn team so bad that not even one player or one aspect of the team emerged as a bright spot for the future or as an over achieving hero.
Even in 2012, players like Jonathon Wallace came in and did everything they could, even if the entire deck was stacked against them.
Next year is probably going to be even worse.

I saw the try hard in Wallace in 2012 for sure but I hardly saw upside with him.
I see some players trying. Faulk even. He at least went after the QB that slammed our DB
