Imagine thinking this is a good thing for the sport.
Crusty old folks want it done the old fashioned way. “Kids be dammned. I want it to be like the old days cause I like that better!”

Imagine how selfish you have to be to be against a college kid making a decent salary while the kid is putting in more work in a week than most paper pushers on this board.

I would guess that a lot of these kids come from household incomes less than $50k a year. Now, a kid can help provide for his family while also getting an education and playing a sport.

If the money is there to pay these kids, what’s it matter? Isn’t it all about helping the student athlete in the end, regardless of a fans personal preference?

I could absolutely end up being incorrect about this, but I don’t see it getting to this level. That would be $85 mill/year with the majority of that going to players who do not contribute. We know individual players are at that level and their payouts will likely continue to rise, but I just don’t see a business making the conscious decision that they’re going to give the backup kicker or fourth string DT a million dollars. But that could just be me being naïve.

This would be only reserved for the top 5-star recruits and it’s already happening…Ewers, soon Manning, etc.

You can think the players should be paid while also understanding the game is changing for the worse.

I personally think this could’ve been handled so much better… some system couldn’t reasonably been established years ago that slowly brought along NIL… instead, the NCAA basically just said ‘frick it’ 8 months ago and threw their hands up after congress/supreme court bitched.

Players have always been paid. You guys were just ignoring it so you could enjoy Saturdays in the fall. What is not ethical is organizations reaping large revenues and not cutting their labor pool in on the profits. You can't provide basic needs and call it good. NIL will ultimately spread the wealth of talent around and that is good. Your Bama's/OU/USC's have always paid in Chargers, free LA mansions, "car lot" jobs, and now the rest of us will too.

Speaking for me, my complaints have nothing to do with paying the players. They should be paid.

My problem is with the seemingly unregulated "no salary cap" free agency we now have.

You're delusional if you think the vast majority of these kids are putting in anything the same academic shift as the general student.

They get free education which is worth an absurd amount of money in itself, free lodging, free food, free clothing, free "tutoring". They lack for nothing. And all for having to work out a few times a week and attend practice for 4 months out of the year.

Poor kids.

Like others have said I'm not fully against increasing compensation in some way, but this free for all that's been implemented is going to be terrible for the sport. You think it lacks parity now? Just wait.

This will only get corrected after it has destroyed the interest of probably 80% of fans.

We are in for some rough years. But, if interests wains in college football, I would think those TV contracts will begin to shrink as well.

Until that time, we probably have to play the game as well as possible.

There's going to be growing pains, but this is one way to save college football from being a G League type thing where schools don't matter anymore and all the good players just bypass college. I think it looks great for an athlete to just bypass school, but that's just setting up MOST of those athletes for failure since they won't be getting a backup if their sports career ends in that G League type setting. Sure they could go to a college potentially after that (not sure the rule here for amateurism), but at a point it would be past their prime opportunity.

I don't necessarily like that the NBA did the whole you can bypass college and get in easily in the past, which to me spurred the need for the NIL allowance. I did think it was wrong to completely limit student athletes from having some sort of per diem which to me also led to this.

I honestly hope this doesn't turn into an arms race and the NCAA sets a limit on what can be earned in a year, I think 50k is fine--still crazy to me for a college student. That just makes a lot more of the tracking into a nightmare. The problem I see there is just an outside-the-NCAA offering a little bit more than that limit.

I'd argue it's basically turning college into a G-League.

Again, I'm not under any delusion that is hasn't been trending this way for a while but there is now zero loyalty to the school and it will be about who can pay the most and if another opportunity comes along just hop in the portal and see ya.

For or against paying players. It's here now. I'm glad we are in the game. We don't need to fall further behind the rest of the SEC.

As i've said previously, FBS has become NFL-Lite, with smaller salaries and more teams.

I'm not naïve about how corrupt the sport has been almost since its inception (if you ever get a chance, watch the 1933 Pat O'Brien movie LINK ]College Coach. a highly sensationalized but reasonably accurate depiction of what CFB was like when it first started gaining popularity). But the one-two punch of NIL and the transfer portal has permanently altered the game almost beyond recognition.

Add to that the insane coaches' salaries boom and the "CFP or the season is a failure" mentality taken on by a significant percentage of the fans and it's just not that much fun anymore.

Sure, I still follow AU, and I probably always will. But the passion just isn't there like it used to be. Which is probably a good thing for me

We could pay all 85 football scholarship players $50,000/year

That's going be like bringing a cup of water to a forest fire.

I think this would be good for us.

Most of these players know they will never see any NIL on their own NIL. Only between4-10 players will be marketable for larger NIL deals.

So, if all players can pull around $50,000 a year from NIL, and then those marquee players can add to it from other companies that what to be associated with those type players, then it is a win/win for the players AND AU>

"Mark Emmert volunteered that the NCAA is currently investigating several schools for NIL violations."

That didn't take long.

It sucks, but I'd rather the kids be getting $ than fired coaches in a buyout or some stupid waterfall jacuzzi in an athletic lounge.

I spoke to my buddy Nick, and he assured me there is nothing going on at Bama. So I will not be investigating them.

For a lot of them, it will ruin any chance they have at getting any kind of life after college football if they dont go pro. Which most of them wont

You are talking about kids where a lot of them can not handle any kind of wealth once they turn pro mustless coming out of high school. It is going to be a financial nightmare.

I have zero jealousy. Its more about how it will effect them and how they go through college thinking it will always be there.

I read up on this yesterday.. Seems like a good idea. My one problem with it is a tiers. A $1000 tier, didn't list the middle tier, and one for $25... The $1000 tier is pricing most fans out. And I'm sure compared to the 1k tier that the $25 tier is going to be almost worthless.. get some stickers or some other cheap shite.

Texas has their big time donors writing checks. We are betting on $25 donations. This should go well.
