I would not have been opposed to keeping Gus another couple of years to get the buyout a little bit lower but he was going to have to go sooner or later. The truly hideous decision was hiring Harsin. He has been gone for a year but the talent deficit remains.

Please list the 6 ahead of AU

I agree with this completely... We can debate details of each but clearly in the last 40 years

Bama
AU/UGA/UF/LSU
UT

No others even come close to those 6. UGA has been more consistent but not as many highs as the others. UF had 2 extremely dominate runs but have been meh outside of those. LSU has been likely the number 2 of the group the past 20 years but they were bottom of the 6 for about 20 years prior. UT had a short run from the late 90's into the mid 00's. Outside of that they have been I guess 4th or so in the east.

Have no clue who he would put above AU of the original 10. Or of the current 12, and possibly the only one of the "new 14" that would slide in with Auburn and that line would be Oklahoma. Texas would probably be on the line with Tennessee. They have had some lean years for long stretches of time since integration.

I break down college history down to different time periods. Pre WWII, Post WWII, post integration, and the 1980-present time.

I would say that Bama, UGA, Florida and LSU would be arguably better over the last 20 years. I’m not sure I would say that UT is a better job though. I know they had their highs but that was 40 years ago.

Auburn is a historically top 15 team. We have some big boosters to spend some money. Our biggest problem are our fans right now. We are a shitshow right now but running through coaches and calling to fire new coaches only makes us more unstable. Saban has dummies call for his head with every loss but everyone knows he’s not leaving until he is ready to. Freeze doesn’t have that luxury. When fans start screaming for Freeze’s head, there is a chance that Auburn is dumb enough to pony it up.

I haven’t missed a block or a tackle in decades.

The fans are not the issue. G-5 roster is the main issue.

Maybe the last 20 but UGA lsu and UF might and that’s a big might be slightly ahead of us. But modern age football from 1980-present it’s definitely tiered like I had it above.

Large State Schools have an advantage over us.

You may not want to admit it but look at how big the alumni base is for UF, Tx A&M, LSU, UGA, UT & bama they are all bigger than we are. They have the state brand. We don't so we have a tougher road to get there and stay there. It doesn't mean we can't get there. It just means it is a lot tougher.

We’ve done just fine not being the named state school.

Just happens that we live in the state with the great college football team in history. I give them credit they perfected cheating under Bryant.

But don’t get it twisted there are very few schools that match us in the last 40 years. Schools above us are Bama Ohio state USC. The rest we can make every argument to be in line with all other programs we are just less consistent. Have to remember UF in its history has never had an undefeated season. What do we have like 7 or 8

Hopefully the ex-AD won't be making any more multi-million dollar hires.

Maybe Haskin gets him an AD job at Boise. They can do winter hot tub meetings

Gus could not crack the current UGA, Bamuh and LSU ceiling if he was still HC. Seems he never won an away game at those three. I think Freeze will be able to handle those three. Maybe not every year but enough times to keep us up there.

And bama doesn’t have a larger alumni base than Auburn. It’s been just in the past 10 years that Alabama passed Auburn in enrollment. So 50 of the past 60 year Auburn had more students and more graduates then Alabama.

Granted Alabama has more “fans” in state and probably nation wide of the younger generation but alumni base absolutely not. Auburn for years graduated 3-4K more students per year then Bama.
