That point eluded me when I posted. Thank you for that.

If you count 2007 as Saban's first class at Alabama you have to count this past year's class at Auburn as Harsin's first class.
Saban first class 12th in the nation (Shula Saban Mix)
Harsin first class 19th in the nation (Harsin Gus Mix)
Saban second class 3rd in the nation 1st in SEC
Harsin currently 77th in the nation 14th in SEC
Yeah I can see the same trajectory
Granted I will give you we are in the middle of this cycle. I am expecting to finish around 27th and 8th in the conference. So not comparable at all to Saban or any of the Auburn coaches you listed. This will be by far the worst recruiting class since Dye came to Auburn
Why the heck are you comparing Saban to Harsin?
Even with Saban's first 2-3 years, he still was a better well known coach who won a NC while at LSU. At a better pedigree for sure. Ofc, I expect his recruiting to look better than Harsin's.
I just understand why the comparison...I guess you were just responding to someone else's reference to Saban...

I wasn’t the one that brought Saban into the conversation.

TBH if we go out and play sound, well-coached football and lose some games because we just don't have the athletes - well, that'd be kind of refreshing.
Sounds a lot like the 1981 squad.
If the 2021 squad can give me 1981 vibes, I’ll call the year a success even if we have a losing record (like the 1981 squad).

quote:I'm not following on your Dye comment. Dye - from memory - ran off 26 players (including RB Sam Dijarnette who blew it up at Southern Miss) and he signed 40+ his first year at AU and half of that class were getting major snaps in 1982 and 1983. My point is, we'll have a pause with recruiting rankings this year with taking many transfers and the staff being new. But this typically happens during every transition in CFB. The actual specific ranking numbers aren't all that important to me. I'd say already that Harsin and staff do a beter job of trying to balance their positions and roster than Malzahn. To be fair, Malzahn rose from the high school ranks and he was learning that part on the job IMO.

You keep proving my point for me.
The writing is on the wall for this recruiting cycle. If you or anyone accepts it that's up to you. I'm not willing or ready to accept finishing outside the top 20 in recruiting under any circumstances. I gave the only "pass" I'll give for recruiting this past year.

Jay - do you think rankings will be as valid this cycle since there has been less in person evaluation of all recruits by all coaches and media due to Covid?

Yes I think rankings matter not only for momentum and perception but these kids have been watched for years now. The top 300ish would be essentially the same no matter what for the most part maybe a few players missed but our coaches aren’t the only ones that can identify players rated outside the norm. Also you can’t play it both ways that we are not getting kids because of relationships and also that players are not ranked correctly. Look at the teams we are losing recruits to and look at teams we are beating for recruits. That should tell you everything you need to know.
When it comes to the players rated from 300-600 there isn’t much difference. Just depends on how much strength, size, speed they develop on how they impact their team.

I learned a lot about recruiting through my son and his high school football teammates. Anyone can commit publicly to any school. The school cannot comment when a commitment is made. The kids use [edit] it as a mechanism to promote themselves and generate additional interest …and it is really wise of them to leverage the system to do so.
A real life example - Jalen Stinson committed to Purdue before his senior season to generate interest from larger schools. Signed with Duke.

It’s a poker game. You shouldn’t read to much into anything other than signing day. That’s where the rubber meets the road.

I'm not worrying about it in the middle of the summer, Harsin is still an unknown with how he'll do in the season. If he shows signs of not being able to produce or develop that's when you can worry.
