Well, I hate that it’s come to this but I’m finally off the Gus bus. It’s like the saying “I’m not angry, just disappointed.”

I’ve been a supporter bc he runs a clean program, doesn’t embarrass us off the field, typically recruits well, is a great ambassador for AU and loves the school and his players never give up on him. I also believe he is 100% good dude and respect him for working his way up from a high school football coach.

He was key in 2010 and 2013 was a magical year, and 2017 had such potential to be one too. We can talk different records against rivals, bowl victories and individual games that left us scratching our heads. And I see where folks are coming from.

Yes, 2020 is screwed up and perhaps not having a spring season led to someone of our current troubles. But we looked lost against UGA, the Arkansas game was a debacle and yesterday felt like a gut punch after our first few drives (I really felt good about the game after the first several series).

Now, for who we could go after, I don’t know. I do get tired of the cries for the flavor of the month coaches or after someone has a big win or looks good in one game, e.g. Kiffin (btw, do not and have never wanted him at AU). Auburn people were calling for Freeze yesterday on Twitter. I don’t know how to feel about that. Also, it has to be considered that Gus was a flavor of the month and we see how that’s worked after 8 years.

The other issue I saw brought up was how would a buyout (even if paid by donors) look during the global crisis. Btw, it doesn’t matter what you think of COVID, there are certain optics and the school has to be careful of its reputation (this is coming from someone who does this for a living).

I don’t know what the answer is, but I no longer think it’s Gus. I just hope that whatever happens we don’t see the team give up this season and that the PTB make a smart decision.

I know, tl;dr

Gus has never lost the team so hopefully that continues. This team is very immature tho and seems to have a lot of look at me type guys.

My only issue with posts like this are that if you are done with the coach which is part of the team why do you care how the team does. Half this board openly cheers for us to lose and look bad doing it so they can get their wish to get a new coach. I want to win as much as anyone. I want to dominate as much as the next person but I will never put my wishes over the team. I'm a true fan and as I've said before until Gus is no longer our coach I will support him 1000 percent. That has nothing to do with sunshine pumping or a Gus lover. It's just the way that it is. We don't make those decisions to hire and fire coaches.

I've never rooted for Auburn to lose, but Gus has caused me to become apathetic about the program. I don't care that we lost, but I also want us to win. It's a weird place to be as a fan. I doubt we move on Gus this season, but I do believe we have seen enough to know he can't get it done in the current environment.

Because even if he’s fired, CGM will have the chance to coach again if he wants it. Might not be as high profile as AU, but there will be opportunities for him. The players only get so many years of eligibility and they deserve the best.

I am in no way rooting for the team to lose (never have, never will). I don’t buy into “it will speed up his firing.”

Until yesterday, I’ve always had hope that we have a chance in every game. With the exception of a handful of games, the team typically is prepared to play and they play hard. Play calling on the other hand seems to be what hampers our success.

I also don’t think this is a rebuilding year. Our offensive line has been rebuilding just about his entire tenure.

The reason for my post was also to be level-headed when it comes to voicing a replacement. There are a lot of bad takes online. People want Sarkisian? Look at his record at USC. If he can’t do it there, what makes people think he can do it at AU.

I have vacillated, especially since 2018. I too think Gus is a great guy who runs a clean program, but yesterday's lack of leadership showed a foundational crack that I don't think "gets fixed" with a staff change or a rallying of the troops. He's lost as a CEO type, and his waffling as a play-caller turned CEO turned play caller turned CEO is the sign of an indecisive guy who is not cut out to be the head coach of a P5 team that competes for a conference title with any regularity. He just doesn't have it, bless his heart.

Auburn has made him a very rich man. Good for him. Now its time to move on.

Gus is a good man that used to be a great coach. I loved that man and still do. He has become an average coach. It is time to part ways.

This! In past years, it really bothered me for a while, when Auburn would lose. This year, it's like I've come to expect it. I'm getting closer and closer to just not giving a shite.

The one thing we know about Gus is that he will do just exactly enough to not get fired. 5-5 here we come

We will get in a shootout with Ole Miss next week, could go either way. Probably whichever team turns the ball over less.

Those next 3 games though look like typical midseason arse whippings that Gus loves to rally the troops. Home vs LSU, at Miss St, and home vs Tenn.

Then we will get bitch slapped by Bama and choked out by TAMU to finish 4-6 or 5-5.

Unfortunately, I agree with this. We’ll be favored against Ms State but that’s it.

Who knows? I had USCe penciled in as a win. I still don’t remember the name of the USCe QB. We just got beat by a bunch of scrubs.

The Mississippi schools are the toss ups because those games could go either way. Gus has never beat Pruitt. That’s a loss.

I don’t think anyone here actually wants Auburn to lose. They’re just tired of the same ol shite every single week. Nothing changes.

I've supported Gus, not as vocal as some, but I understood we hired an inexperienced coach, he's going to need some on the job learning. I respect the way he's run the program in his tenure and I believe he's completed enough on the job training to adequately judge results.

We have inadequacies (o-line, QB development) that just are not improving. And Gus has had time to prove that he fails to adapt and innovate. The arms race is moving on without Auburn. Time for a change.

ETA- I will never hope Auburn loses, but I have accepted that this year is going to be painful.

Thoughts on candidates-

Hugh Freeze is diet coke Malzahn except he cheats.

Lane Kiffin is like dating a stripper, fun and terrifying.

Cristobal, I have a hard time believing he would come.

Are we sure Bruce Pearl doesn't know a little football?

I agree and don’t want Freeze or Kiffin. Sure as hell don’t want Meyer, a name that gets thrown around.

Not sure if Cristobol would come or PJ Fleck.

I like Josh Heupel (and yes realize they lost yesterday) He was a successful QB and coached successful QBs and coached under established HCs. He has experience in SEC and has recruited in the South.

ETA: looking online and strong feelings from fans that Heupel isn’t a good coach due to inability to win one score games. Don’t know enough about UCF to say if that’s coaching or not.

Two Mississippi school and one of LSU or Tn.

If these idiots decide to keep running the ball instead of trying to be Air Raid Lite, we could win those games.

You can judge a coaching staff almost wholly on whether the players play hard. AU plays hard for this coaching staff, sans maybe Ellis Johnson's stint on the defensive side, and that was fixed. Coaching and X's and O's is almost always overrated unless you are doing things that run counter to your strengths and talent. If I have a major complaint thus far, it would be that Nix is averaging 35-40 attempts per game and not rushing more as a team, when the strength of our OL was thought to be good run blockers and average pass protectors. I think Morris probably overestimated Nix's assumed performance for 2020, but it will take the whole season to make a judgment on that decision. Nix is simply not very efficient right now and has some flaws he needs to correct.

If (insert name here) were to replace Malzahn he'll win 65%-70% of his games at AU as well on average. Just like most of our history.

This might be one of the best posts I’ve read here this week. I’m in the same boat as you. I’m grateful for Gus leading a clean program and staying out of the headlines. Genuinely believe he loves Auburn and will likely retire in the community some day as well. But his time as head coach has to be coming to a close.

Long time AU fan here. I started watching Auburn in 1982, when I was in 4th grade. Even when we had Pat Dye, I knew that we couldn’t win them all. But, I enjoyed watching us be competitive and go toe to toe with everyone. You might beat us, but you would know that you’d been in a fight.

With Gus, we roll over and play dead. Georgia has whipped us like a rented mule. We don’t look like we belong on the same level of football as them, most of the time. When Bama beats us, it’s the same. It’s not close.

I’m ok with losing from time to time, but, for goodness sakes, punch them in the mouth too. Make them work for it.
