I would take Will Muschamp in a heart beat. Hopefully, he would stay for 3-4 plus years, at least.

I just don't see a major P5 program knocking on his door and offering him an HC job, anytime soon. Hell, he couldn't even get a DC job after his USC stint. In all fairness, and I think Muschamp would agree with this, he should've stayed at Auburn for at least another year or two. Much better jobs would've opened up and he'd have more DC accolades under his belt.

True, but would you want to work under Gus for that long?

Speaking of, what's Steele up to these days? Hell, I'd take him back in a second!

Steele ran a ton of man coverage. What were we doing when Felipe Franks threw for 300+ yards and 4 TDs? Mac Jones and his 5 passing TDs? Or when Northwestern throttled us 35-19 and their QB threw for the most yards he did all season? Did man coverage help us stop Texas A&M's run game? Is Smoke Monday getting lost (in both man and zone coverage) new? Is the problem the scheme or the overall talent level? We haven't had a pass rusher since 2017. We haven't created turnovers ever. Last year we had the worst 3rd down defense in forever.

Still better than what I've seen for 3 1/2 games this year. We just had a walk-on rb, gash us for a half, toting the rock straight up the middle. WR running uncovered all over the field. Our DL was pushed around and back by GA ST.

All the talk about QB play has been dominating the conversation, but the defense is where our massive liabilities lie. Talent is down and we are running the wrong scheme for the talent we have.

I sure, as Hell, hope Mason can recruit, because from what I've seen he's not all that good at coaching them up.

20 years of losing in Baton Rouge will do that.

I hate that I didn't get in on this sooner.
For the record, I despise Mason's defense. Soft defenses have no place at Auburn. I hope he finds another job and soon.
I had enough of this torment when Gene Chizik was HC.

Is Mason's contract for 2 years or 3?

If it's 2, he definitely will stay through 2, but if his defenses don't show improvement, then Harsin would have the luxury of moving Schmeddling into that spot after Mason's contract is up.

What type of D did Ellis Johnson run when he was with us? I thought it was that bend/don't break scheme...that eventually got him fired too.

I really don't want Muschamp, unless he plans on staying as a DC for the rest of his career. But I do like his recruiting and most of his D philosophy...

But for now...I will be patient for a new DC bringing in a totally different scheme, that definitely has to have time for players to mesh...

Yeah Harsin already used is get out of jail free card with the WR coach. I can't think of any time a first year coach fired multiple coaches after year 1.

I think Mason will improve albeit in small steps. Our dline is just not that good. Having zero pash rush will make any secondary look bad eventually.

We'll take our lumps this year on D but get some transfers on the dline in the offseason probably at LB too to ease the learning curve of losing Zakoby and Pap

And why is that?

Because he will cut and run after a year even with a 2.5 mil coordinator contract. He's flaky and unreliable at best.
