All I need to know is the verifiable information that Harsin was the guy that got hired came from Pete Thamel and Bruce Feldman before a word came out of our insiders mouths about him.

They know nothing. They’re not on the inside of anything.

It happened. Who in their right mind would tarnish Kevin Steele of all people like that for no reason? If you look at the history of coaching hires at Auburn by these people, Kevin Steele being buttered in as the successor follows the playbook to a tee. He was approached prior to Malzahn even being let go and told to assemble a staff *wink wink*. Also, Rodney Garner is a fricking slimeball and he better not be back.

But it didn't. You seem to emotionally invested. To answer your question...agents and pay site insiders.

Again, I agree we probably tried to get him. However, history will tell you when Auburn tries to get a similar Power 5 coach it always ends in a raise for said coach. I am glad we tried though. I don't care that he used us for his own benefit. IMO he was never ours for the taking. It just doesn't make much sense for him.

We just got a guy to walk away from his alma-mater wherein he basically had a lifetime contract in an "easy conference" and we're still questioning why a guy from South Florida who wants to play big-boy football would be interested in leaving Oregon? Mario Cristobal was there and we fricked it up. Its okay, but he WAS there.

He walked away from a Group of 5 job. If you can't see the difference between that and Oregon there isn't much reason to keep discussing this situation. Mario was offered and he said no. Because there is almost zero upside to him leaving Oregon for Auburn at this point.

There is literally no credible evidence that Mario was even contacted, much less offered.

If I never hear from another AU "insider" again, it will be too soon.

The only three guys confirmed that we spoke with were Harsin, Venables and Napier. The only two we strongly considered were Harsin and Venables. Those are known facts and anything outside of this is pure speculation.

Yeah, I have no doubt we went after Venables hard. Apparently he was given a few days to think about it, which might explain why Harsin wasn't hired quicker.

Murphy did comment on Steele earlier in the week. There was a plan by some to have him hired but that plan was never accepted by Greene or Gogue.

My fil just recommended I listen to his podcast about Harsin. I gave it a go.

My god. It’s not good. He’s pretty cringeworthy. Do people really take this guy seriously?

Yeah it’s rough. I’ve tried to give him the benefit of the doubt but dude’s a snake oil salesman and not a good one. Loves a vague statement too.

Yep. And I'm pissed and embarrassed that I began my meltdown which only escalated when I was under the impression that Napier turned us down.

If you look at only the KNOWN factual information, this was an incredibly successful search and hire.

I probably chose my words poorly. I believe using the process we looked into it which Mario used as leverage. He wasn't "offered" IMO but there seemed to be enough info about an attempted back channel contact. It also might have been agents spinning it for Mario and using our beat guys to get it done.

There are probably lots of coaches we contacted via their agent to gauge interest. I'm sure ADAG, like most, has a short list of coaches he'd reach out to in the event of an opening.

His folks contact a coach's agent, agent says "yeah, my guy would be interested" or "no, not interested", BUT that agent now has leverage to go to the current employer and say "Hey, Auburn's interested in Coach X. What can you offer to make him stay?"

And thus, coach gets paid, agent gets paid. And agent tips off beat writers who then put that info out there.

It’s Kurt Crains kid. I doubt he knows too much but he’s pretty spot on, on his recruiting predictions. I don’t listen to the podcast much but his auto text for recruits is nice since I don’t follow as much as I once did.

yep, that's what I meant when I used offer. It was a poor choice of words. Semantics.

No worries. It's a messy world when you get into coaching searches, especially when there's this much money involved.

Well it still seems Steele got used as clickbait material and that’s not cool at all. He’s been a good coach and a good guy for AU.

I hope people unsubscribe to paywall message boards and stop paying these guys paychecks.
