I was going to save some of this for 3 things I know, 3 things I think on Wednesday, but why wait?
Below are a few items I'm hearing from inside the locker room and others close to the program. If you don't want to hear some bad news, look away. I'm not hearing a lot of positive things inside the locker room, so click away if you'd rather go along your day without hearing what players are thinking in private.
- There is animosity in the locker room. Some defensive players have not been fans of Jarrett Stidham for nearly a year, and while that's not affecting play, obviously, the locker room features a lot of quiet corners, if that makes sense. Some players are playing for themselves, though the defense has managed to come together unit by unit, and are held together by Deshaun Davis and Marlon Davidson. The offense isn't the only unit with issues with chemistry, so I want to make that clear, and so did one of my sources.
- Chip Lindsey calls the plays and they're filtered through Gus Malzahn. Simple. Players know it and they think it's strange, leading to some unfavorable opinions of the head coach among players on both sides of the ball.
- Right or wrong, some players don't like Jarrett Stidham's happy, go-lucky attitude. He was smiling wide and skipping around outside the locker room after the game, prompting some parents and players to shake their head and grumble. Stidham is disconnected from the team, save for a few close friends, and a lot of the defensive players are not happy with him, his performances and his attitude. He shows leadership on game days, but the players don't see a killer instinct and his words ring hollow to several offensive players, and it's bothering the defensive players from afar.
- Several players are discussing departures after this season. Malzahn is being criticized privately by a handful of players inside the locker room, which isn't uncommon for any program, but the whispers are audible grumbles this season -- and have been for most of the year.
- Several receivers are frustrated with Stidham. Several offensive linemen want to leave if they believe they can be drafted in the middle rounds of the NFL Draft, but inserting my own opinion here, who exactly is going to be drafted from that offensive line?
- Simply put, there's dissension, albeit quiet, but it's growing and it's clouding the thoughts and actions of players at practice and on game days. There's not a player on offense everyone turns to for guidance, and while the offensive line has been an absolute mess, Stidham has done himself no favors in the eyes of the players.
- Malzahn is unaware of these opinions in his own locker room.
Again, that's what's happening in the locker room. I'm just sharing what I've been told by several people. I'm not taking sides and I'm certainly not altering what is being told to me.
My thoughts:
- I'll be surprised if Chip Lindsey doesn't look for a way out after this season.
- Several players will leave the program if something drastic doesn't change with the atmosphere of the program.
- Accountability is an issue. There needs to be more action rather than talk, in the locker room and in the coaches' offices. If anything, there probably actually needs to be an airing of grievances among coaches and players in a team meeting. What's happening now is not constructive and is bordering on cancerous.
My thoughts... Stidham is a transfer who knows he'll play on Sundays. No surprise to me the locker room is looking at him as an outsider and "privileged". Afterall his father-in-law is the CEO of the Houston Rockets.
I'm sure Malik, maybe even Gatewood think they could do better and are making a stir with some of their comments.
I do agree that Chip will be gone after this season. Instead of being "fired" he will be told to shop around so it doesn't look bad on the university.
What i'm unsure of is if Gus will bite the bullet and hire someone outside of his comfort zone or go with another person that will agree to run his offense. Someone like a Eliah Drinkwitz.
It will be hard to get an elite OC when candidates look at what happened to Chip and Rhett
If things don't improve with the team I could see Stidham grad transferring (assuming he's graduated or on track to) somewhere near Texas closer to his family and fiance'. I wouldn't fault him at all. He would be awesome at TTech / Okie State
This isn't groundbreaking news from BM he eluded to it weeks ago but didn't come out at say it. I wish he had kept this in his pocket or just kept beating around the bush. Not a good look for the program

after what happened with Baylor, sitting out a year, now at his second school, do you think he, or anyone, would want to go through another transfer? I would just enter the draft and call it good if I were him

I didn’t make this thread because I still questioned if Marcello actually wrote it. Does he want to start reporting in the parking lot again?

if true plus along with some of Stidhams fam throwing shots at Gus. it sounds like things are on the edge of getting 2012 bad if they haven't already.
wasn't it around this time in 2012 when Sammie Coates called out his teammates and said similar things?

Absolutely none of this surprises me...especially the fact that Gus is oblivious to the animosity...dumbass!
edit: this is just all part of the process of becoming a basketball school.

It is hard to watch.
Losing a game is ok. Being disorganized and directionless is not.
4-2 is not the issue.
The issue is even when we win, we look like a intramural team as far as organization.
We have spring and fall practice and still take weeks to sort out who the playmakers are.
The offensive line is the glaring weakness, but a coach who recognizes that would adjust gameplay accordingly.
Gus just thinks, “if we make a first down, we will go NASCAR and our inside zone will bust one.”
I am mystified why he is not willing to adjust anything.
It going to lose him his job, but the buyout is enough to keep him comfortable.

The article makes sense but there are a few notes that serisouly make me question whether any of this is real, namely,
1) the part about Gus not having a clue; and
2) the part about certain o linemen seriously considering declaring for the NFL at the end of the season - I can't imagine a single lineman who truly thinks that he would be drafted.
This article might be true, but at the same time Marcello might be full of shite or he might have gotten all of this information from one player who doesn't know shite and is trying to stir things up.

This is a "Gus is getting fired so it don't matter" type writing

On the Scout boards, there seems to be quite a bit of rumbling that it was Leath/prominent booster who pushed the Malzahn deal, not Jay Jacobs
Considering how Jacobs had his wings clipped and announced retirement before the contract, makes sense that he wasn't the driving force.
That said, I still blame Jay Jacobs

That might make it seem unbelievable to you, but you need to learn that all these guys believe they’re going to the league. It’s been pumped into their head since they started receiving D1 offers. Just watch a Last Chance U type show, even though we all know there is no chance some of these guys are playing on Sundays, they believe they are.

So we no longer line up quick after a first down and run up the gut fast?
Posted on 10/8/18 at 6:06 pm to makersmark1
All I need to know from that is what we all knew to start. Stidham is a pussy, and Gus is still calling the plays. As no suprise to anyone with a brain the lack of execution (giving a shite by the offense) has the defense ready to break out the prison shanks.

I believe every part of this story. Now just grow a pair of balls and call it out in a press conference.

I've said it before, in this forum and others, the 1981 Auburn Tigers are one of my all-time favorite Auburn teams.
They ended the season 5-6.
They were out-talented that season by at least 7, maybe 8, of those 11 teams. But they played HARD. They played DISCIPLINED. They EXECUTED. They played TEAM football.
They just didn't have the hosses. Better teams won, yeah, but they knew they had been in a alley-fight to do it (lost at the Iron Bowl 28-17, lost at #1 UGA 24-13, lost at Nebraska 17-3).
But, damn, they were fun to watch. And all of that year, watching that effort and discipline and execution, you *knew* there were better days right around the corner.
The current dumpster fire inspires the opposite.

AU football is a dumpster fire and the only way to save it is to rid ourselves of GM now. Bring in a Jeff Brohm or Jeff Heupel, offensive minded head coaches and hopefully keep our D coaches and recruits. No reason to put off and let AU football slip into a deeper hole. Yes it’s going to be expensive but look at what we just accomplished on our funding campaign. We can do this!

Gus has his issues. We all know that, but Stidham’s camp doesn’t have a leg to stand on. He’s played like shite and isn’t pulling his weight. They can all shut the frick up.
