If Golesh was required to keep DJ Durkin, this program is broken completely.

If Golesh chose to keep him, that’s ok, but defense needs to improve for DJD to keep his position.

Personally, I wanted a more defensive minded coach with a CEO approach. Sumrall was more along those lines, it seemed to me. Golesh puts me more in mind of what we've been chasing since Tony Franklin came to town: a scheme that solves recruiting challenges. (Thanks, Saban) And I fear regardless of how good a coach he may be, that mentality may just be the absolute wrong fit for Auburn.

Golesh started as a defensive coach.

Buster was all in coming here with Sumrall. It was a done deal until Cohen renegotiated Dunkin’s contract.

Only fix for that is go to a Reduced Instruction Set (chip) if the possessor is too slow.

Here's the ball, you need to run that way, and about 3 touchdowns later he should be able to pass every now and then.

it seems pretty obvious that last years team was mainly there for the paycheck, as evidenced by how many of them left for greener pastures

you cant say “this isnt a rebuilding job” when you struggle to identify anyone who would start at another non-Arkansas SEC school

It is...That is why I said it SHOULD be getting the ball out before 2.5 sec. If he can throw it by then if not then run or roll out to buy more time.

Auburn absolutely missed out on Jon Sumrall. I may be biased because Jon
is an alumnus of the same high school as me, 18 years later than me, but I saw him play in high school. Jon was a difference maker on his high school team, very competitive and tough as nails.

Jon is building a team at Florida on both sides of the ball starting from the line of scrimmage out. He brought in a top notch coaching staff and has support of key people, including the old ball coach, Urban Meyer, Tebow and others. Florida gave him the keys to car and told him to drive. He reminds me of a young Pat Dye, who he gave praise after the win against Auburn . Jon's dream job was probably Auburn or Alabama since he grew up in the state but Florida is a top notch program with unlimited resources. He may not go undefeated this year but Florida will competitive this year.

Auburn on the other hand has a booster problem, too many cooks in the kitchen who want to stir the pot. I almost long for the days of Bobby Lowder, almost.

Personally, I am sick of the see how many plays we can run a game high school offense. Elite linemen hate this offense, I rather watch a team that dominates both lines of scrimmage.

A Florida message board was talking about Sumrall and the Auburn job and they said Sumrall mentioned a "scenario" that went down but never mentioned Auburn. They said he talked about it months ago in the offseason. I'm paraphrasing but they said Sumrall asked the interviewer "How would you feel if you were a coach who played defense at this level and have always coached defense but at the very end you're told that you have to keep a defensive coach and that coach will make the defensive decisions and call all the defensive plays? Wouldn't that be a slap in the face to you? Here at Florida, that would be like them telling Steve Spurrier that he has to keep an OC and that guy will call all the plays and will coach the QB's. Do you think Coach Spurrier is going for that? Hell no. He won a Heisman when he was a QB. That's a slap in the face."

Btw, I watched Marty and McGee interview all 16 SEC coaches at SEC Media Days. The SEC Network replayed them over and over. Sumrall also tells another issue he had but didn't name Auburn by name but it's very familiar to what we have heard before when we fired Chizik and then Kirby Smart told us he wanted this job but also wanted to coach the SEC Title Game and if they made the NCG, he wanted to coach in it as well. We told Kirby he couldn't and we needed him at Auburn to recruit and he ended up staying at Bama and we got Gus. Bama won the Natty over Notre Dame that year and Kirby has said that was his favorite moment at Bama, winning the Natty and dominating Notre Dame. Btw, Saban let Kirby take the UGA job at the end of 2015 but also let him get ready for the playoffs, etc at Bama. Saban said Kirby did just fine and Bama beat Clemson for the Natty AND Kirby took Glenn Schuman and other defensive coaches from Bama with him and Saban still let him do both jobs. Not Auburn though.

Anyway, Marty & McGee asked Sumrall about why he chose Florida and he said the biggest reason was because they allowed him to finish his time at Tulane. He said "You may think I'm bs'ing but I'm not. I get coaching offers every year and turn them down. This year I was serious about taking a big job and I told teams that if my team gets to the AAC title game, I am coaching them. If my team happens to get to the playoffs, I am coaching them. If you can't allow me to do that, I'm NOT coming to your program. That's why we coach is to win titles and coach in the playoffs. FLORIDA was the only school that allowed me to do that."

So if you can read between the lines, from Sumrall's own mouth, we may have been stupid in 2 different ways: forcing DJ Durkin on him AND telling him he needs to come to Auburn immediately instead of coaching Tulane after the regular season. I will say, Golesh himself has said he did his interview with Auburn after the Iron Bowl that night (his game at USF also was a night game that night) and it was by facetime. He said he accepted the job at 1:30 a.m. the night of the Iron Bowl and had never met the Auburn administration until he flew to Auburn. That lines up with the rumors of Cohen giving Durkin more money without telling Sumrall. Then Sumrall finds out around Thanksgiving and tells his agent, Clint Dowdle, to tell Auburn I'm out. Then Auburn was stuck with Durkin to be HC but in the 1st half of the Iron Bowl, Auburn was getting blown out and our boosters and Cohen were freaking out that "we are gonna get blown out AND have to present our fans with their new HC tomorrow, the same coach who got blown out last night by Bama."

And luckily Sumrall's agent Clint Dowdle called Cohen during the Iron Bowl and said "I have another client who I think would make a good coach for you, Alex Golesh." Yes, Sumrall and Golesh have the same agent and Golesh literally dropped into Cohen's lap. Auburn thought Golesh accepted the Arkansas job but he almost did. That is how fricked up Auburn was in all this. We hired Golesh only a few hours after knowing he was available and our boosters and AD never met him in person but still hired him.
