Every school has boosters, yes. Not every school has our booster situation with football and it does make a major difference.

Man I got my arse kicked on here for saying that very thing when we hired preacher Hugh.

Uat had an even worse booster situation than you could ever dream Auburn having. They were able to hire Saban.

Yep. And the only way they were able to hire him was to give him control. It will be interesting to see if DeBoer enjoys the same luxury.
No football coach at Auburn has since Pat Dye left the job... and this is why we hire a Hugh Freeze instead of a Sark or Smart.

Kirby wanted full disclosure of the investigation against us and we wouldn’t disclose it until he signed. He also wanted to coach the NC and we said no.

Lane was a done deal, until his sorority daughter axed the decision. She wanted to stay in Ole Miss. Kiffin actually playing dad. If it was Freshwater he would have said frick it, come and just send her a monthly allowance.
We have a great coach, we need more grown men.. if Im wrong, meet me at Sonic and I’ll buy you a sushi.. make sure it’s the Happy Hour time… I’ve got bills to pay

Isn’t it true that Smart was coming to Auburn if we let him coach in the natty with Bama and TPTB said no?
No. And even if he was, what kind of precedent would that have set?
What he wanted was every single thing we knew about Cam and any other potential violations while the NCAA investigation was still ongoing. How do you think that would have worked out when he took all of that to Saban and the REC? It would have been spun far beyond what it was, just like when Arrington and his Boyz water dropped CPD to death back in '92 by releasing bits of tapes that ultimately said nothing.

The guys with the money are not good at selecting head coaches. I'm amazed they can't "run numbers" on who we be the best fit for Auburn. They tend to select people based on their connections to the program or SEC. They miss on up and comers like cignetti, Lanning, rhule, etc because they aren't good ole boys. It's mind blowing.

The auburn booster boogeyman is more lazy excuse making. Every big school has boosters and if they didn't they wouldn't be able to compete. Plus all we've heard since Hugh was hired was how much the boosters were supporting him and alignment and blah blah, now of course they are the problem again

We would have been hiring Smart in December 2012 and the NCAA had already come out and cleared us on Cam over a year earlier.

You can "run numbers" all day long and be unable to come up with the "best fit for Auburn."
That is because there are many factors other than HC which determine the success or failure of an individual program ... especially one as traditional as Auburn University.
Unfortunately "the guys with the money" don't have the benefit of hindsight like you do.
And BTW, Cignetti (and most other "hot" media prospects)wont even be a name you remember in 6-7-years.

The bammerham media really brainwashed a lot of Auburn fans into believing that narrative.

It's not hard to see other coaches improving the teams they coach. Is that a metric our "coach hiring staff" fails to look at? I can easily look at available coaching records, stats, etc and say "man that coach has taken 2 losing programs and won 9+ games several times. He produced a top 25 offense and recruited well.
We're auburn so let's hire someone that doesn't have that experience. But hey he was an assistant ball boy for auburn in 1987.
Not only that but how do you improve a roster and get worse?

News flash. Every new coach deals with huge turnover and everyone transferring out. The excuse Freeze uses to blame Harsin is expired. Also, anyone could have won the games we did. Not a single good win in 2yrs unless you count A/M trap game. He’s literally won ZERO. No upsets, no great coaching games, just horrible loss after horrible loss. You really couldn’t make the product look worse. But hey we look good on made up recruiting rankings. Freeze sucks and we need an actual football coach that doesn’t start every sentence with an excuse. He literally thinks he’s doing well which is such a joke.

That's what I'm saying. Auburn University and whoever is responsible for hiring football coaches seem to pick coaches based on their associations and not their track records. Freeze is a phenomenal recruiter. I think he deserves 2025 to prove what his recruits can do. He 100% needs to bring in portal guys and adjust his staff. If he fields another 6 or 7 win team in 2025 he needs to go.

To be fair, hindsight is 20/20. Gus was the right hire at the time. He and Kirby were even at best. Kiffin/Sark were tainted with alcoholism and women issues. Saban cleaned them up, but the timing was weird. We weren't competing with Texas for Sark at the time.

This is so false. Kirby wanted the job and was set to take it in 2012 but, he wanted to coach the National Championship game and Jay’ dumbass told him no. It blew up from there. And for the he was waiting in the Georgia job crowd, maybe he was but, show me a time in history when a successful coach has ever left Auburn for another job.

I’m glad we didn’t take Kiffin and I will die a thousand times on that hill
Posted on 12/1/24 at 11:15 am to Nerd
The problem with Freeze is someone told him it was ok to suck at football as long as you sign some bs rank recruiting numbers because Harsin set us back 100 yrs. Same people have been asleep when CFB recruiting /portal changed over night.
