Hugh Freeze is hiring DJ Durkin to be @AuburnFootball’s DC, sources tell ESPN. It will be Durkin’s fourth different stint as a DC in the SEC. He was at Texas A&M the past two seasons, Ole Miss the two seasons prior to that and Florida in 2013-14.

Solid hire in my opinion. Ole Miss was ranked in the 100s in defense when Durkin came in. He worked miracles with them. A&M’s defense has been very good, they certainly shut us down. I would say more than any other team other than NM State. He was once national recruiter of the year. Saban admired him enough to have him observe practices after his dismissal from Maryland, and almost hired him this offseason before retiring.

Excellent hire from both a recruiting and on field standpoint if so.

Time to get to work now. Let’s get the players evaluated, set the scheme, see what we need in the post spring portal and get after it

I wonder why it took so long. Was he not our first choice or were we his backup plan?

19th in total defense in the country while having a mediocre offense and a crap head coach is a standard for a good defense however.

If we have low turnover for two years, I think this will be the best recruiting staff we’ve ever had top to bottom.

Glad that's over. Seems to be a good hire. He has a solid resume. We could have done worse.

My guess is Kiffin was number 1

But that is purely speculation with no sources other than tea leaves from on3 info.

Don’t love the hire, but we could do much worse.
