Interested to hear GenesChin's take on this.
I think I mentioned before that I sort of expected it. The only reason I thought we possibly could keep Murray is that he is a niche fit as a 6'3 PF/C
Murray before McLemore's injury only averaged 20-25 minutes per game with a usage rate around 20%. For a guy who averaged 30mpg and 35% usage rate nationally, that's a big cut
The problem gets worse as Okeke is only going to eat more into Murray's already reduced minutes at the 4. Murray doesn't have the positional flexibility to be ideal options at the 3 or the 5 either.
What that means to Auburn
Assuming Okeke's role swells to 25-30mpg, the immediate concern is finding who will substitute in for the 10-15 minutes lost by Murray transferring
Possible Sources:
- Grad transfer big wanted free trip to Maui + NCAAT
- Purifoy playing minutes at the 4
- Giving McLemore/Spencer minutes at the 4
The bigger concern: Injury risk, not rotation depth
We should be able to easily absorb the loss of Murray from a rotation standpoint. We easily will have multiple players for every position
The problem will become our growing risk of injuries derailing the team.
Weirdly, I think the solution is actually to bring in a grad transfer PG. By doing this, we are 3 deep at every position with players comfortable at that position
PG- Harper/ GT PG / Doughty
SG- Brown / Doughty / Purifoy / Dunbar
SF- Purifoy / Dunbar / Doughty
PF- Okeke/ Purifoy / Spencer or McLemore
C - McLemore / Spencer / Okeke

Nice, thanks for readdressing it.

Alright, now I am officially melting.

Because we lost a couple players who would only have played 10mpg?
Or because we lost a ballhog in Heron and replacing him with a better player in Purifoy

I've been wondering what role Murray would have next season also, even as going as far to say that I could see him being both a starter and having a lot less minutes..
We are still fine.. not sure why some are freaking out. We still have a solid team returning, especially so if Wiley returns and/or Akingbola's early arrival happens.
PG- Harper
SG- Brown, Doughty
SF- Purifoy, Dunbar
PF- Okeke, Akingbola
C- Wiley, McLemore/Spencer
You're right, we need a GT PG..

Akingbola isn't playing PF unless we are in a bad place. Purifoy would get backup minutes at PF before Akingbola
I wouldn't be shocked if McLemore/Spencer see 3-5min at PF + 3-5min of Purifoy and Okeke avg ~30mpg
Dunbar likely will be playing 15-20mpg at a minimum

My view of Akingbola has changed.. He will be a beast, mark my words. He is much farther along overall game wise than I originally thought.. He is super-athletic, great on-ball defender, quick leaper like AkM, great rebounder, great shot blocker, and has a very nice jump shot that is smooth from beyond the arc. Watch his latest AAU Highlights.. He is legit, more than i thought several months ago. It could just be me but I feel we found a diamond in the rough and he is severely underrated due to the recruiting sites' unfamiliarity/history with him. I think he has the ability to contribute right away.
Although, I could be just extremely optimistic..

Why are people melting about us losing a 6’3 PF who was going lose minutes and was pretty much a non-factor when started playing teams with any size?

Desean was a quality depth guy that offered 10 and 6 a game. It’s still a loss even if he was only 6’3. Not to mention Pearl said a couple times that Murray brought toughness to his team.

His minutes might have decreased, but this years team had great leadership. We played a UK team with a significant talent advantage but they had zero leadership. Where did all that leadership come from at Auburn? Was it all Anfernee? I am of the opinion Murray was a part of that puzzle...we may have more talent on the court next year, but it won't shock me if we don't play as well as a team.

You may be right, but unlike last season we have a number of players ready to step up
Not sure we have the same need for someone to step up like Murray did. We will miss toughness standard though

So I'm sure this will upset some of our cranky old fans who believe people shouldn't have fun playing sports but...
Our team is going to have some serious swag next year. Samir Doughty is an all American level shite talker and we know Dunbar lives for the highlight reel + celebration
While last year we played with a chip on our shoulder, next year we will play to make teams quit

Random question - does anyone think that when the news that Purifoy and Wiley got paid that this might have caused team dissention? Might be a dumb question so feel free to downvote this post but I am genuinely curious about this.

If it caused dissension it would have shown in their play and they wouldn't have had the season they did in my opinion.
I say my opinion because I am only an expert when it comes to hedge funds and making billions of dollars, but I sell tractors to keep it real.

Okeke is obviously overtaken Murray,
Wrong. Murray way better than Okeke right now. Okeke has a lot of upside but he needs to grow up fast and stop getting abused in the paint.

Both of them got exposed at different times against different teams. Both really struggled down the stretch. For next year, after Okeke has had a full year at Auburn in a strength program and working on his craft? Okeke > Murray all day.
