I don't think the son is the aspect that really matters though, merely the coach's protege.

More of a mixed bag then if you widen it that much. Remember th' Bahr wanted either Stallings or CPD to succeed him. That would have worked out well for them, not so much for us.

I wonder if Pettiford knew.. I imagine part of his decision to come back was to play for Bruce. Not saying I think he will leave, but I do wonder what he's thinking.

I’ve always heard everyone at Auburn wanted Paul Davis to follow Shug but Shug instead brought in Barfield and groomed him and told them that’s who he wanted.

I am seeing other schools had their first day of basketball practice today. Did Bruce really retire on the first day of basketball practice?
According to this we started out first practice less than an hour ago lol.

Must be a wild day in that building.

Someone asked if this transfer from Dad to son has worked before. Only 2 i know of are Murray Bartow for Gene and Pat Knight for Bob. Murray went 103-83 and 48-46 in conference in 6 years. Made NCAA 1 time.
Pat Knight went 50-61 overall and 16-42 in big 12 over 4 years So not a great track record.

That's how Bruce wants to go out? Fine by me but he did a disservice to tbe program he built. He earned the right to burn it back down.

IMO Bruce is going to be around the program for years to come. Just because he isn’t the head coach doesn’t mean he won’t be there and just his presence is insanely valuable.

He strategically exited to minimize transfers and coaches leaving IMO

That's great and all but I believe if we hired a rockstar that earned the job the other stuff would've settled into place and a new hope emerges. Do I think Steven gets us to another F4? No I do not. Considering the ills of basketball forcing us to acquire 10+ new players this year Steven can very easily have a bad year and then recruits can think well "Auburn must not be what's happening" anymore to no fault of Steven at all. And that is when decline begins.

Let's be honest though- absent of full transparency with his kids (someone said this leaked before bis players knew about retirement) he also trapped kids at Auburn to getting coached by the JV coach and that is also not ceremonially cool.

Bruce's status demands a statue but good God dont slight our future just so we can swell his head with more pride.

When can we start recruiting? Lord knows our rivals have been.

1. Tiny sample size.
2. Bartow’s program was already awful by the time he stepped down. Pat Knight took over mid season for a program that was already in shambles.

We have been an elite program for 6-7 years and are coming off a final 4 with what is generally considered to be a good roster even if it is mostly brand new. Much better situation for Steven to step into

Doesn't the window open tomorrow? I guess we will see.

I think Bruce earned the right to name his dog the follow-on head coach at Auburn.

Hopefully, Tommy Boy can sell some brake pads and we don't go outta business.

I have always had the feeling that Bruce leaves at the worst time for a coaching search so that Steven gets the position. Don't think he's be shady about it tho.

I posted this above in the basketball thread on 8/15.

Bruce has earned the right to leave however the frick he wants. He doesn't owe us a damn thing. We owe him. HE made us relevant.......not the other way around.

And leaving while still having a role with the AD and leaving a good roster for the next guy.. could have been much worse
