I can only imagine how much the area has changed since you grew up there. Hell, I have been visiting for 20 years and it’s changed like crazy.

It's definitely not the small town I grew up in!

Thanks for tolerating my reminiscing

Small update on Battie, he was still intubated/sedated as of a few hours ago. Going on 4 days now.

Depending on how extensive the cerebral swelling it is, they might have him sedated until it can decrease. To get a fully grasp on brain activity..

With all that said, I don’t think it seems good either

AL.com update says the perp is claiming self-defense. Self defense led the POS to wildly shoot and hit at least 5 persons? This is starting to stink bigger than the Rod and Paula Bramlett murder!

Ridiculous.

What happened to 3 strikes?

They haven’t announced that he shot all of the victims, have they?

No not to my knowledge. Its hard to get good information beyond the name of the deceased and Brian being one of those present who took a bullet.

While I completely agree, not being out at 3:30 am with a gun isn't a very high standard. In my life, my friends and I have done that zero times.

The fact that you are getting down-voted for this is fricking crazy!

I wasn't there and do not pretend to know what happened, but if, for example, there's jawing going on, possibly back in forth, and the Battie brothers confront him, which parties were acting in self-defense could get really murky.

Again, nothing good happens at 3:30 in the morning, especially in a parking lot. Go home. Go to bed.

I'm sure I'll get downvoted, but with a small dose of common sense, none of this happens at all.

Tragic situation. I do hope Brian recovers.

Exactly what I said earlier. Since they were all packing, we dont know who got things started. The guy standing there or the two who approached him.

Either way, a bad deal for everyone all around. It is just too typical these days. I can not imagine that my life means so little to me that I would put myself in that kind of situation

Things certainly got more murky since those brothers fired shots. We have no clue which bullet from which guns hit the 4 or 5 victims.

It is easy to throw the blue/orange glasses on and say this guy, who had a bad rap sheet, just blew them away but honestly, none of us know.

Two guys walking up to you carrying at 3am. What are you going to do?

I see things like this up close every day. I am a special education teacher and work with mentally ill children and teenagers who have run afoul of the criminal justice system. I have lost count of the number of kids who have been murdered or who have killed someone.
It is hard to understand if you have not seen how these kids live. Most come from homes where every adult has a lengthy police record. Most have suffered from mental, physical, and sexual abuse. They have seen their older siblings get shot. Most don't expect to live to age 21.
Sometimes things turn around. I have seen some graduate from high school and get jobs. Those successes are few but are why I keep trying. I have been doing this for 3 decades. I am not the same as I used to be. I am vigilant about locking doors and making sure that I always have a gun handy even though I live in a very safe place. I get anxious when people walk behind me and don't go out at night very much. Forgive the lengthy diatribe. This topic hits close.

I can not even imagine what you have seen and honestly, probably dont want to see it. I think for most of us, it is easier not to see it in order for us to just live our lives. Cudos for you doign that and putting yourself through it. I just dont think I have the empathy for something like that. Certainly one of my biggest character flaws. Probably just easier to sit back and judge.

Jk

I am a believer in family at a young age is one of the biggest isses with people who get caught up in this kind of life. Having a solid family early on can really help mold a child. I was fortunate to have that. A lot are not

I saw a interview a while back where a guy who had shot someone was being tried for murder. His claim was that he never had a chance as a child and the biggest reason was because hid dad left early and his mom just could not handle him and his 3 brothers.

They then asked him about his life and he said he had 3 kids with 3 different ladies and he didnt live with any of them. At some point, that cycle has to change in order for real change to happen.

I know it sounds easy looking from the outside but I think it is true. Who will make those changes?

I think you provided the answer. All of us should call out destructive behavior when we see it, especially when it impacts others in a way that is harmful. People don't want to judge but ultimately I think we need to.

LRB thank you for the work you do. One of my best friends job right out of college he went to be a counselor at the little juvenile prison in Birmingham right outside of Trussville.

It changed him as a person because he worked with sexual assault victims that became violent assault perpetrators. He would tell me stories that the inmates would tell him about being the victim and the criminal. Absolutely abhorrent behavior.

If this situation turns out to be one of those… “put sum respek on my name situation” I’ll lose my mind.

How many more black young men have to die because they felt disrespected. As mentioned just take it and go home alive who ever it is.
