I think Fleck would be a good hire. All he has done is win.

Somebody mentioned Mario Cristobal in a previous thread. The more that I have thought about him, the more excited I get. He has won at both his head coaching stops. He is an elite recruiter with ties in South Florida. He is an oline coach by trade. I have no doubt that he could assemble an all star coaching staff at Auburn.

I will dream about hiring Mario Cristobal until we finally fire Gus in December 2022 after his 5th consecutive 8 win season...

Bob Stoops would probably end up like Harbaugh at Michigan. People seem to remember his coaching career more fondly than it probably deserves. One national championship (2000) and an otherwise pretty okay record in a conference all of us would expect Auburn to be at or near the top of every year.

Am I wrong? I also know jack shite about Fleck.

I keep hearing that Fleck is a rah rah type. Of course, Dabo is a rah rah type, so maybe that’s not a bad thing.

Fleck is 50-35.

Inherited a garbage Western Michigan program and in 4 years went:
1-11
8-5
8-5
13-1

Do think his Minnesota tenure is being overrated. We will see how he ends the year. He took over a team that went 9-4 in 2016 and has gone:
5-7
7-6
8-0

Fleck has been coaching and recruiting the Midwest his whole career. I'm always a little concerned about stuff like that, an "outsider" or "bad cultural fit" can be given a lot more resistance around the south than in other regions of the country, especially when you're not a household name which Fleck isn't yet. Plus let's be honest here, running the program at Minnesota is closer to UAB level than it is to Auburn level

Will be interesting to see who is available after next season.

Jeff Fisher? His daughter went to AU.
Lane Train (Joey Freshwater)
Matt Campbell (Another Iowa State person, Leath, Chiz)
Urban Meyer (pegged for USC)
Jeff Braum (Hot name before, but not so much now)

Any assistants? TRob, TWill? Dell McGee?

She's not the only one. Don't tell me you forgot about Trent already

Urban would be the only one on that list who I feel confident would be better than Gus. Fisher seems like a pipe dream (with a near .500 record, by the way) a la Gruden to UT. I guess his name is being floated for Vandy, though.

Title in 2000

Title game in 2003, 2004, 2008

Countless Big 12 championships.

I think I'd go younger but he'd be a home run hire

So had Urban Meyer...

Is he closer to Dabo or Butch? That's the concern...

Maybe you're correct. I'm sure someone who cares more than me could argue otherwise, so I'll defer for now.

And Urban Meyer was already a household name at the time because of Utah being the original BCS buster and because of Alex Smith, more people knew him at the time Florida hired him than know Fleck now. Plus it's a little easier to recruit to Florida than Auburn

I don't think Cristobal is a bad idea I'm just surprised people think he'd be a feasible get for Auburn. Maybe we could do it, but far from certain.

Stoops, Jeff Fisher, etc...I just don't think it'd work in the long term. I mean, like any normal person I'd be pumped to see what Stoops could do here. But in reality he's retired and I think guys like this are going to trend toward the Jimbo end of the scale more than the Saban end. Meaning I think they lack the obsession and focus of someone like Saban and may not want to outwork Saban, Kirby, etc. in the prima donna 18 year old kid sweepstakes that is the SEC.

Fleck is interesting because he fits the category of cultural builder and hustler. But there is a very thin line between what I'm looking for there and a guy that is not going to be authentic in the long term and just end up looking cheesy as shite. See: Butch Jones. I don't think Butch is a shite coach. I think you can pull off the act of the culture/brotherhood/family thing in college ball (Not NFL, Dan Quinn), as Chizik did for a year, as Dabo has done successfully for several years, etc. But I just don't have a good read on whether Fleck has the stuff to pull it off.

Right now the only guys I'd feel particularly decent about hiring would be some heavyhitter/legacy hire (subject to caveats above) or Matt Campbell.

In a few more years I'm interested to see how Scott Satterfield is faring at Louisville and how Brown does at WV. I'm not necessarily against a Venables or Aranda, I just think it's a crapshoot.

I think it's pretty clear that recruiting is not the issue.

I haven't heard anyone mention it recently, but as I recall Urb turned down an offer from his 'dream job' at Notre Dame to take the Gators gig. So much for his midwest background

That said, Fleck is hardly a slam dunk. I'd make a run at Cristobal if I were looking (which, admittedly, AU will almost certainly not be).

I don't think it's much of a stretch.

Guy went to Miami, coached there for several years, then at FIU, and spent four years under Saban at Bama. He's much more of an SEC guy than someone like Fleck or even Stoops (who's last experience as an SEC assistant was in the previous millennium).

I’d be afraid of Cristobal leaving us for Miami if we did hire him. Fleck is an intriguing guy as well. I still like Les Miles too.
