I don’t think Gus has a scouting issue at QB. I think he just wants the wrong thing.
Gus’s major flaw is that he wants his QB to be a blank slate when they get to him. The more a QB knows about the position the more he has to unteach. Super raw, sky high upside players are his wheelhouse.
Nix was practically gifted to us which is great because I’m not sure he would have necessarily made Nix his top priority at the position.

Cam was as raw a passer as they come...huge transformation in a short period of time.
Yall are acting like Cam was trash and Gus made him great
Cam was unbelievable at every level including @ Blinn. True Gus's offense was ideal for Cam's skillset but Gus in no way "developed" Cam.

But we’ve also found some diamonds in the rough (Cam, NM)...so I don’t think Gus’s eye for talent can be questioned either.
Cam was not a diamond in the rough. I'll give you NM though.

Talent? No.... Ability to play QB? Gus has major issues in that department.
Jonathan Wallace, J3, JJ, Trotter, The fat white kid, Woody etc.

Thank goodness for Stidham (another transfer) and Nix

I truly feel the need to slow everyone down on Nix. Though very promising, he has not played a down yet

Yep. I think Gus has been slowly getting away from this luckily. He just isn't a QB coach. His refusal to let his QB's get coaching elsewhere was so unbelievably stupid. I think Lindsey has really helped in that regard. Gus knows how he wants a QB to run his offense, and that is great. Use that knowledge. He doesn't know how to grow a QB fundamentally IMO.

247 had one as well that was a little different. Had Joiner listed as backup HB. Actually had Joiner listed a lot of places

Dang man. Why not give more warning? You put his name right next to the alert. Ruined the suspense.

what are we expecting out of Montavious this year? Can't believe he's already a senior
Posted on 8/20/18 at 3:31 pm to SECdragonmaster
I wonder if Marshall/Siposs will be situational. Wouldn't surprise me if Marshall is listed as the official starter and comes in when he have a short field. Bring Siposs in for all the other punts until if/when he improves enough to take over full time.

He’s looked like a senior citizen since he was a freshman lol but it’s crazy that time has flown by like that

quote:Our third game that year was on the road, on a Thursday night, facing one of the greatest HCs in CFB history, leading a P5 conference team ranked #20 coming into the game, who would end the regular season divisional champs and ranked #9 before losing their conference championship and their bowl game and finishing ranked higher than us at #18.
BUT, of the first five games, LSU was probably the most formidable opponent.
quote:Our 2014 schedule included 7 teams that ranked in the AP top 10 at some point during the season (we defeated 3 of them), and our bowl opponent was ranked #11 at the end of the regular season.
And some how we ended up with the status quo of an 8 win season
Of course we also lost to two different teams that season who had been beaten 59-0 by the last P5 team to play them prior to them playing us, so there's that

I really hope he has a breakout year. He just needs to stay healthy for once.
Interesting that both projections have Siposs as the starter.

5 Auburn players who gained, lost most during Fall Camp 2018
quote:
Gain: WR Matthew Hill
All of Auburn's freshmen receivers earned early praise during fall camp but Matthew Hill might have the fastest path to the field due to his position. Hill is at the H/slot/3 receiver role, where Will Hastings was so effective last season. With no proven players at that position, Hill may not need long to see significant action on offense and he's among the players working on both punt and kickoff return.
quote:
Gain: RB Asa Martin
The lead running back role was never going to be contested and JaTarvious Whitlow entered fall camp in the No. 2 spot and locked it down, but Asa Martin carried momentum from what was a solid spring as an early enrollee and is in contention for the No. 3 spot at running back
quote:
Gain: C Kaleb Kim
Kaleb Kim opened fall camp as the first-team center and remains the projected starter, so how did he gain? First, the players he competed with during the spring, Nick Brahms and Tucker Brown, were not factors in the position battle during fall camp.
Then when Mike Horton was taking reps at center and Calvin Ashley was at right guard, it was possible for Kim to wind up the backup once again. But he proved worthy of being the starter and should be in line to do so.
quote:
Loss: QB Joey Gatewood
Joey Gatewood lost when Auburn signed Cord Sandberg. Adding another competitor in the quarterback room for 2019, when the Tigers will also have Bo Nix, makes for a fierce competition in the future.
In the short-term, it also means one will get to work with the third-team and the other will be with the scout team.
When he was live during fall scrimmages Gatewood played well, so he's far from out of the picture.
quote:
Loss: Buck T.D. Moultry
T.D. Moultry entered fall camp as the projected starter at Buck and he could still end up with the job, so how did he lose? With Nick Coe splitting time at Buck and defensive end it puts Moultry's grasp on the starting role in jeopardy.
Defensive line coach Rodney Garner also demanded more from Moultry.
"T.D.'s just got to keep coming," Garner said. "He's got to really get that track mentality out of his head - oh my ankle don't feel good today, my hamstring don't feel good today. That's football."
quote:
Loss: RB Malik Miller
Malik Miller entered fall camp among the players with the most to lose and unfortunately he did. A minor injury, which Gus Malzahn described as a "soft tissue issue" set him back early in camp and true freshmen Asa Martin and Shaun Shivers moved ahead of him and Harold Joiner is also contending for reps.

Completely disagree with this. Cord Sandberg will never come close to seeing the field. Joey Gatewood is miles ahead of him as a player and a QB.

Yeah. That was pretty stupid. Especially when they go on to say how well Joey played in the scrimmage.

We got some stud QBs that can paint with balls if one can lose ground even though he played well.

Dumb. And they listed two banged up young OL as 'lost,' Brahms and Hamm, who will both likely be starters in future years. How does 5* signee Calvin Ashley getting beat out not make the list? How about guys like CBs Broussard or Malcolm Askew?
