Same here, I used to wonder how all those Muslims die in those human stampedes come pilgrimage time, but I certainly see how it's possible, it's like being in a slow powerful wave that's pushing you around and you have zero control over it other than to try and get out.

I was a kid (maybe 11 or 12) at the 1989 game. That mob scene at tiger walk was the most out of control I have ever seen. Got separated from my dad and granddad and re-united with them an hour or so later at the car. I literally got trampled and crawled on my knees trying to get out of it, but ended up at the front where the players and coaches were coming through. I was actually relatively safe there, but I do remember being seriously scared in that hysterical mob that was '89 tiger walk.

I was at the 89 game. That was the most amazing energy I ever felt at an Auburn game. Bama was gonna lose and everyone knew it. Tiger walk was insane.

Energy was amazing that day.

There is a funny quote from Dye about when he met Curry before the game. Dye says he was surprised because Curry thought bama had a chance to win. Dye of course said he realized when they got into the stadium after Tiger Walk that bama was in big trouble.

My granddad was a pretty big man, 6'2 or so but never that emotional or made a lot of noise at games. That day was different. He had anger in his eyes and hate in his heart and was loud and scary. Only time I ever saw him like that before or after.

Auburn people were treated like 2nd class citizens by the gumps back then and it was waaaay worse when Bear was alive. My wife truly hates Alabama. A lot of people who grew up then know the sentiment. When bama finally came to Auburn there was no question they were gone get their arse beat. All that emotion from the entire auburn nation came out at once. Never seen anything like that tiger walk. amazing.

Those bastards were in our house. No more of this neutral field bullshite. Bama and Georgia got a lil taste again in 2017.

That was my first Iron Bowl. Loved how they had to come over the loud speaker to keep the students from throwing the uprights over the wall of the endzone on the Alabama buses.

Me too. I was in the Navy at the time and drove down from Norfolk VA. I had 2 season tickets back then that my family happily used for me... except for THAT GAME. The only thing that would have kept me away from that game was sea duty and I had shore duty at the time.

I sat in the student section because you could still sneak in there at that point in time.

^^^^^this

I only went to Alabama twice a year (one was for Thanksgiving). Being around my gump cousins/Uncle made me despise bama at an early age......I have never outgrown it.

Oh shite, was that the game the goal posts got passed up to the top of the student section end zone? I had forgotten which game that was. I was at the game it happened but forgot who it was. I was in section 9, row 38, seat 11 at the 89 game (still have ticket stub of course).

From what I recall, several thousand students got on the grass in the area between the fences and the stands behind the bama bench and ran from end zone to end zone after we kicked that last field goal. I don't remember people actually on the field that game.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't that the 1997 Iron Bowl?

Whichever game it was, I remember the PA announcement via "your announcer, Carl Stephens" (who was also the voice of the SEC Championship Game until his passing) requesting that the students "please not throw the goal posts over the side of the stadium".

Edit: I just read the post to which you responded. I can tell you for a FACT that the goal-post incident didn't occur at the 1989 Iron Bowl.

Yeah, I think that was the 1997 game with the Scissim (sp) fumble. Pretty sure i was a student the game that happened and i was a student in 1997.

So what kept you from tossing it over the side?

P.S. Also there was no way for the students to throw anything on the Bama buses since the Bama buses parked outside the North End Zone and the students are in the South End Zone.

I wasn't in the end zone, lol.

I always sat to the left of the band if you are facing the band, towards the north end zone. I always got there early enough to get a pretty good seat. Although I was always pissed at the frat section being roped off when I was there 2 hours before kickoff for big games and could basically pick my seat except for the frat areas which were the best albeit a bit low.

I did sit behind the band once and in the endzone once or twice but that's about it.

Oh, I should clarify, the game where the students got behind the bama bench and ran from end zone to end zone for the last few plays was 100% the 1989 game. I remember that 100% and I definitely remember the PA announcer saying about a dozen times to please stay off the field through out the entire 4th quarter.

If you go to YouTube you can see and orange and blue blur go by behind Bill Curry a couple of times when they show him in the final minute of the game. That was a small fast moving rowdy mob of AU students.

ETA: Just checked YouTube. It's with 4 seconds left when they show curry, you see the AU student mob rushing around behind him and the bama bench.

I was at the game as a kid where the goal posts were getting pulled up into the student section. Man that is an early memory. I was like six.
