While we are on the subject of old games, I'll throw out maybe the most underrated environment in JH history IMO. One of my top 5 games of all time and one of the loudest 4th quarters in JH history.

1990 Au vs FSU.

To set the stage everyone in the country had a loss except Virginia (who was a pretender no one thought was anything), and us and Tennessee who both had no losses but had just tied each other two weeks earlier.

We were #5 (#2 and #3 lost earlier in the day), FSU was #7. Both teams thought they were playing for a legit shot at the national title in a rare night game at AU (lol as it turned out).

We had 1 loss in 1987 - FSU
We had 1 loss going into the 1988 Sugar bowl when we were absolutely robbed by FSU on the worst PI call we have ever suffered (seriously).
We lost 2 games in 1989, one was to FSU.

We were pissed at FSU, every bit as much as we were when we played UGA at JH last year.

FSU was better and actually favored. However, we had won 20 in a row at home (Dye didn't lose many at JH in the 80s).

We scored on the first possession of the game, then FSU dominated until we got a field goal late in the 3rd to cut it from 17-7 to 17-10.

Both bands tried to play over each other and continuously the entire 4th quarter. Ron Franklin and Gary Danielson comment on it several times. It was bowden's infamous fumble rooskie that backfired. We were beat about 3 times in that game in the final few minutes then something crazy happened. When FSU goes for it on our 30 something and loses almost 30 yards on 4th and short, it has to be one of the top 5 (or so) loudest moments in JH history. The Auburn Tigers chant right after at 50 seconds left in the game was the loudest, fastest AU tigers chant ever. Each side of the stadium was screaming it at the other so fast it was blending together.

Here is the you tube. The fumble rooskie is at 3:10, the comeback starts at 3:15 and 3:33 is when the stadium loses its mind.

Couldn’t make it to ‘90 FSU because my then-wife was 9 months full of baby and ready to pop.

4:00 AM the next morning after she was waking me up going into labor. I always tell my son about how he was born because of a huge win over FSU.

Plus, that ‘88 Sugar Bowl, that was a huge pass-interference NON-call, wasn’t it?

Yeah, that 1989 sugar bowl blown call was so infuriating. Honestly, I cannot think of a more infuriating blown call in my life. Can't remember if it was Freddy Weagan or Shane Wasden, but I know it was to put us at first and goal at about the 4 yard line with under a minute left and all the momentum in the world. That BS absolutely won the game for FSU.

By the time that 1990 night game at home rolled around, we had had all we could take of Bowden and FSU. The fans and stadium were a buzz saw that night. We actually sucked in 1990 and FSU was one of the best teams in the country, but that was one of those games where home field wasn't 3 points, it was more like 3 TDs.

No, wasnt Tillman. It was a white guy.

I believe Weagan was a freshman in 1984 and Wasden was there in 89 and 90. Pretty sure it was one of those two.

Off to google...

ETA before google, going with wasden. If I'm right about Weagan, he would have been gone by 88.

It was Weygan. Been spelling it wrong.

And that shot was at the 1.5 or 2 yard line going in. 100% cost us the game. Now I am pissed off all over again. frick those refs.

Weygand. That boy had about a 6 year career at auburn with injury and red shirt and whatever. Never forget a punt return he made against UT for a touchdown in 84 or 85 in neyland stadium

Trey Gainous had an 81-yd PR for a TD at Neyland in 1983. Is that the one you're thinking about?

I was there, freshman year sitting in the student section endzone, front row. Kinda where the ROTC students sit now. I think Amp Lee (or some other FSU player) was the kick returner and he was taunting the student section and we were giving it back to him pretty good. It was an electric atmosphere and one of my favorite games as a student.

I remember 89 and how no one would leave the stadium. It was so loud the goal posts were rocking.

We always got there early and sat behind the band just above the handicap box so no one was in front of us. Had to go up a couple rows to mix a drink.

'90 FSU was awesome as well because I had two high school friends at the game that were at FSU. I had been down there to see the game in Tally and heard all the smack talk.
