quote:

TROUP COUNTY, Ga. (WTVM) - The car that reportedly belongs to a missing Auburn student, from Georgia, has been found in Alabama - 45 years after he went missing.

Kyle Clinkscales disappeared in January 1976 while making the approximately 45 minute drive between LaGrange, Ga. and Auburn University.

Troup County Sheriff James Woodruff confirmed to an affiliate in Atlanta that Clinkscales’ car was found in Alabama today.

The Troup County Sheriff’s Office has scheduled a news conference for Wednesday morning.

You have to read the articles with this guy's voice; adds a lot of suspense. Don't worry about that eerie feeling you now will have for the next 45 minutes.

I’m not following the article...

Published 2005, which states an arrest has been made.

Ray Hyde has been responsible for the death, who died previously in 2001.

Did they arrest the person who came out and divulged the information that located Kyle?

I hope his parents are still alive and can finally have some closure. They have known he was dead for a long time, but to finally be able to bury his remains will be a big psychological thing for them.

I just looked at Google Maps+Street View, and County Road 83 in Chambers County is still very rural for most of its run. Still though, with hunters, etc. it is a bit surprising that someone didn't run across the car sooner. I can't believe it would have been underwater and just recently surfaced due to low water flow.

Without knowing anything I'd bet the group Adventures with purpose found it. If y'all aren't familiar with them go check out their YouTube

Sadly, they've since passed...2007 and 2020.

Vaguely recall hearing about this back around the time of his disappearance.

Did they ever establish a motive for Hyde shooting him?

If the car was found that close to the road it’s hard to imagine how it was not found sooner

I had forgotten about this case, but here is an interesting article that appears to answer some of the questions. John Clinkscales died in 2007 and Mary Louise died in 2021, hoping until the end that her son would be found.

Detectives believe that Ray Hyde murdered Kyle, but he died in 2001 without ever confessing to the crime. While they still don’t know why Kyle was targeted for murder, they believe that he likely overheard something that got him killed. Ray was a member of the Moose Club and frequented the bar there; he was also deeply involved in criminal activities. Six months after Kyle went missing, Ray was convicted of numerous auto theft charges; detectives believe that Kyle may have overheard Ray discussing where the stolen cars were concealed. Ray was also involved in the drug trade and it’s possible that Kyle witnessed some kind of drug deal that later got him killed.

Kyle was a part time bartender in Lagrange, and they think he overheard stuff about Hyde.

It was not a drug ring but a car theft ring, and supposedly Hyde had 50 acres to hide his stolen cars.

The witness who came forward years later was 7 at the time he saw Kyles body dumped in a barrel in a pond on the guys property.

Now why his car is in the creek, it's still being investigated. All the suspects etc, I think are dead now too...

Wait this was actually featured on Unsolved Mysteries? May have to dig up the episode.

EDIT: OK, I have done a lot more reading and now have been drawn in.

Can anyone tell me where the hell his car was found? One news article says Lafayette, AL. Another article says Cusetta, AL. And yet, another article says Troup County, GA.

The car was found in Chambers county in Alabama in an un named creek located between Lagrange and Auburn.

This is one of the more bizarre mysteries I’ve read about in a while.

Thanks.

Now the obvious question is were Hyde's two accomplices lying? Once of them CONFESSED to helping dump the body and was convicted and sent to prison. He said that he and Hyde put it in cement then dumped it into a pond. He then claims that Hyde went back later, retrieved the body, and moved it to an unknown location (he said Hyde didn't tell him).

Another woman was supposedly there. She has maintained she had absolutely nothing to do with it (denies she was even there). Nonetheless she was charged with concealing a death and obstruction.

If the bones in that car are identified as Kyle's, then this whole confession goes out the window. It means this guy was almost certainly lying and confessed while innocent.

That was my same thought process. You mean a guy dug a body out of a concrete drum in a pond, put it behind the wheel of a car, and pushed it off in a creek? Possibly, but weird.

It happens, and more often than most people think, for complex reasons that most people don't understand

That said, there's something we don't know here

Exactly. I guess it's possible. The guy did say Hyde later moved the body to another location, but it just seems highly unlikely he would put it behind the wheel of Kyle's car and then somehow put the car in the creek.

I guess we'll have to wait for the forensic people to 1) positively identify the bones as Kyle's and 2) See if the state of the remains are consistent with "being in cement" at any time.

BTW, the accomplice is now out of jail. I am sure the Police will be talking to him again.
