the new Yankees stadium, Citi Field, Bush Stadium, PetCo Park, and Citizens
Been to all of these except PetCo. As much as it pains me to say, Citizens Bank is the nicest of these.

part of the experience is being tied to something unique to the venue/city. The arch backdrop in St. Louis. Wrigleyville in Chicago. Chavez Ravine in LA. The city backdrop and stadium center in Philly. Yawkey way in Fenway. Being in LoDo in Denver. The iconic Camden Yards scape. The river just beyond the wall in Pittsburgh or the cove in SF.
I agree with you here, but lets discuss the "new" stadiums.

The area outside Yankee stadium sucks. I had no desire to hang out in the area after the game ended.

Citi Field (and Yankees fans call it Shiti Field, ) is in the middle of nowhere.

There is absolutely nothing to incentivize staying in the area surrounding the Philadelphia stadiums after the game ends. Every time we left and went to the City Center area of Philly.

They had just finished the Fox Sports hangout thing in St. Louis last time I was there. I like the area immediately surrounding Busch Stadium, but if you venture a block further than the "baseball area", then you're in Indian country.

The "nice" part of the Inner Harbor is shrinking in Baltimore. If you don't park in the lots between Camden and M&T Bank Stadium then you need to get your car out of the area pretty damn quick.

Stadium wise, Truist is as nice as any of these stadiums, but I agree with you that it is missing something iconic to Atlanta.

My critique about The Battery: I wish there were more Atlanta or Georgia unique things in the Battery. Every major city has a Yard House. A PBR Bar with Coors Banquet shite all over it but never has any Coors Banquet to serve in a city that isn't exactly known for rodeo is fake as shite. Walburgers? fricking please...

The stadium and The Battery do need some character.

Having the cookie cutter chains may have worked in the Braves favor during last season though. Those chains can take the hit of having to pay rent without any income from those locations much better than if The Varsity or something like that had a location in The Battery.

It's no Wrigleyville (GOAT), but, the area does have a lot of cool, iconic bars around it. Also, it's incredibly easy to get to via the subway.

If it's good enough for the most famous franchise in baseball, surely Atlanta is worthy...

Good post. Agree with most of what you're saying.

The whole idea of building an ecosystem around the stadium is really smart! The location and the bars/restaurants leave a ton to be desired.

. If there was an arena at the battery the NHL would be successful as well. The Thrashers outsold the Hawks many times despite being treated like the Cleveland Indians in Major League.

The Thrashers outdrew the Hawks every year of their existence, I do believe.

I won't hold my breath for an NHL return, but the League was willing to sacrifice the Atlanta market in order to get rid of the Atlanta Spirit Group. An arena at the Battery would be incredible.

I don't disagree but the giant corporate bars are just what you get these days in the entertainment complexes that surround these stadiums. Even Wrigley is losing the neighborhood bar character for the new giant trendy bars. The new development around Gallagher Way is like exactly what the Battery is.

I'm not sure what the Braves could have done differently, like if they put it in Atlantic Station its still the same general concept as the Battery just in the city. Maybe the views are a little bit better. The Gulch would obviously have been good but again the area around the stadium still would have mirrored the Battery.

They're essentially the only thing that can afford the business model.

And when the Battery was announced all we heard was "enjoy your chilis!"

Then came Antico and Superica and HF, etc.

Sure, I'd prefer a local establishment over YardHouse but people have moved the goalposts a ton on the Battery. Ultimately it's about the best you can do in a new growth city like Atlanta. And it's why every similar city is doing the same thing.

Yeah, the stadium itself is nice, but it needs a view out beyond the outfield, not just the damn hotels/office buildings. The view from Turner was great with downtown out there. Doraville could have been situated to see Stone Mountain, or Midtown/Buckhead.

Food-wise, I think ti's great that there a Fox Bros and Antico at The Battery. But like you I would love to see more "Atlanta" food places. Varsity, Taqueria del Sol, etc.

To have that kick-arse view of either would've required elevating the ground level there at least 50 feet.

In any case, Doraville was never seriously in play.

There are absolutely quite a few unique places at the battery. Yard House sucks arse obviously as does PBR but Pheast, Superica, El Super Pan, C.Ellet's and Antico are all fantastic.
Finally, Garden & Gun club is an absolutely phenomenal little gem.
The food is great and the cocktails are the best you'll find in Atlanta along with the theme and décor it's our go to place and is like an oasis from the crazy crowds.

I couldn’t be happier with the location. Getting to and from the Ted was an absolute clusterfrick. It was an extremely generic multipurpose stadium converted for baseball. The area sucked. There was nothing but parking lots and blight.

Had they built it in the gulch or the northside area mentioned earlier I certainly would have gone to far fewer games than I have over the last few years.

The Ted was very much designed for baseball with the track-and-field components secondary.

Yea I thought he was referring to old Fulton County but the Ted was a
very good baseball venue and Fulton County wasn't all that bad after the Falcons moved and it was used exclusively for baseball.

What? There may be a couple of restaurants consider part of small chains, but most are either one of a kind or part of a small local Atlanta group of restaurants.

WTF are you talking about? Yard house and PBR are the only chains. They have Superica, Fox Bros, Antico, Terrapin, El Super Pan, Atlanta Spirit Works, H&F, C. Ellet's....all local Atlanta or Georgia businesses.
