is their a realistic unicorn out there?

it would please me. after Bielema flop I have no reason to think I'm a good judge of these things

I'm confident our fans won't react like the Vols did today after rumors of their unapproved coach-to-be came to light.

I figure as long as no Holtz, Miles, Strong types.

I mean if we hired Saban or Belichick then I doubt we'd see anybody complaining. Other than them? Nah nobody will please everyone

i think most of the names thrown out will be well received and given a chance. even the guys im not super high on, i realize can make improvments to a talented team and move us forward

I think most fans would get on board with the names being floated right now. There might be some initial backlash with Kiffin and Venables, but I think most would come around pretty quickly.

Only Vandy had less wins than us.
Let that sink in.

Ditto.
Tennessee's fan revolt came about because of two reasons:
a) Schiano's alleged involvement in the PSU scandal
b) they hired someone other than Gruden, and he was an odd fit
The former is pretty terrible and obviously a nonstarter, but I have a hard time believing that's the sole reason they were rioting in the streets. I'm of the opinion it had at least a little to do with the fact that their fans were led to believe for months that Gruden was coming and had actually started to buy into that nonsense.
We don't have that sort of dynamic brewing. Heck, despite the Gus rumors, there's a large subset of our fans who don't want him. I think after the disaster that was the Bret Bielema era, our fans are ready for just about anything else.

That's exactly how I feel.

No serious candidate is going to please everyone. I just hope the folks making the decisions get it right.
Like someone else said already, we can all debate who we think should get the job, but I doubt many of us would actually want to be the one making the final decision. I know I sure as hell wouldn't.

There was a guy very seriously tweeting it was either Gus or Pete Carrol for him earlier and I had to refrain myself. There is no way any hire will please anyone.

Kiff, Venables, and Norvell are all three viable and good candidates but all 3 also have downsides. I think 90-pkus percent do the fan base woo do be happy with any of those guys... Like said above... It really can't get worse than the Bert era

I'm fine with an up and comer. I'm fine with a more experienced coach. I don't want coaches like Gus and Lane who have had mostly mediocre results at places objectively better football jobs that are easier to win at. That's research done for us, we don't need to see how they'll fare here.

For the most part our fan base will rally around the new coach after the initial hire.
We've got to admit, we have a pretty good fan base compared to most of the shite out there.

Winning will shut the whiners up. That is all I want from a coach

Norvell seems to be one that will go over the best. Loves Arkansas and no history.

I will be happy with just about anyone we pick after the last couple of years. I'm not sold on Lane Kiffin as the second coming of Knute Rockne for example, but I'll happily take him over Bielema's bunch. I will gladly hop aboard the Lane Train as long as it doesn't stop at "lose to Toledo" station.
I could see fans being a tad annoyed if we hire... say... Kim Jong-Un as our new football coach but even then, after the last couple of years, we'd find something to be happy about. "You have to hand it to Jong-Un, after he had Kelley beheaded we've haven't had any players get drunk and drive." Or "You have to admit, the team has lost a lot of weight on that North Korean diet he put them on."
As for the Vols... its like the entire fan base is Captain Ahab from Moby Dick. Their obsession with hiring a coach that hasn't been on the sideline for a decade and hasn't coached at the college level in something like 25 years is kind of scary.
