Where is there, if any, proof that we're looking at him?

And what story? Why he took a lateral/downward move or has never been offered a head job?

You don't know shite.

Solid call on the UNC game btw, you ever going to own that one?

I don't think Venables has any interest in leaving Clemson, and I don't know what kind of head coaching material he would be, but Clemson's fate changed the minute he arrived on campus. The man is one of the best in the business at coaching a defense. Clemson's classes are consistently top ten now because somebody figured out they have to recruit the Atlanta area.

I have a feeling we are about to find out if this is true or not.

No, I want the OC to do that. You want an offensive coach to scheme around deficiencies on defense, which you admit is harder to do?

My point is that trying to focus on defense with our talent level is basically futile.

Ask 100 coaches if the cliché is true. Offense wins games. Defense wins championships. If our problem is talent level, how is trying to focus on offense going to be anything other than futile? Do you honestly think we are going to pull more spread talent out of Texas than the 25 or 30 colleges already recruiting spread talent out of there?

I can't say it would be a bad hire.

No, but I want our HC (who is presumably the best coach on the staff) to have an offensive background to ensure success on that side of the ball. I don't want a situation where we get a defensive guy and he finds it hard to field a good defense with our talent level, and then because of his inexperience with coaching offense nabs a shitty OC, and we end up sucking.

We're not winning any championships, soooo

You clearly still don't understand the point I've been trying to make for the last 2 and a half pages.

Look at the teams who have beat Bama in the past few years. All dynamic offenses that are difficult to scheme against defensively.

Look at Petrino. Wildly successful here with a good offense, didn't emphasize defense at all. Is this really that difficult to understand?

According to who?

They've been top 10 once in the last 5 years per 247.

BoarEd is either trolling or completely out of his mind. His example to show that a defensive minded coach can win at Arkansas is Bret Bielema.

I guess not, sorry. Dumb I guess. I've never been a football coach, but I believe the thousands I've heard say unequivocally that defense is more important than offense. The only championship team I can think of that didn't have a great defense was Auburn 2011 or so, with Gus as OC and a defensive head coach.

Can't say it would be a good one with certainty either.

Sorry, didn't mean to come off as an a-hole

You used Auburn as an example though... they have way more talent than us

Stonehog,

You are the most disengenous a-hole on this board. Either that or you're fricking stupid. I brought up Bielema's name as answer to the question about when was the last time we had a defensive coach.

I choose to believe you are not stupid enough to believe I was using him as an example as a successful defensive minded coach, because I didn't say that at all.

Instead, you are just a plain disengenous frickstick and aren't worth my time.

frick off and have a bad day.

What is his record again?

Does he get half wins for every Stoops and Dabo win?

Enlighten us.

247 is more accurate, but I follow ESPN as well

since 2012 when Venables was hired they have been in the top ten four times, and one time they were 11th.

0-0 as a head coach obviously.

The appealing part is that his defense has taken two different teams, in two different power 5 conferences, to SIX national title games.

Some people can see the worth in a coach like that.

Others can't.

All I can say is I'm glad we don't have morons making decisions for our program.

Yes, he is one of the very best recruiters in the nation. And one of the very best defensive coordinators as well. His results speak volumes.
