Last time: we're talking about Arkansas. Just Arkansas. Not every team in America. JFC.

You are talking like there are coaches who place no emphasis on defense.

That isn't true.

Now there are coaches who dictate what is ran on both sides of the ball, Bert is like this, that is why little changed with coordinator changes, more so on the defense because that was "his" side of the ball.

Petrino was like this too, to his detriment.

Norvell is the only HC I can recall who has said you hire the guy you choose to run the other side of the ball and let him run it, defense in this case.

Now with that in mind, ignoring all the factors that makes Memphis's defense what it is, that isn't a bad philosophy from the HC'ing standpoint, but you are less likely to find a defensive guy who gives free reign to the offensive side of the ball as he's going to want a gameplan that protects and aids his defense with few exceptions in this such as Bob Stoops.

You're projecting. Playing in the SEC west is exactly why defense has to be the primary focus! If we were in the B12, B10, or PAC12, you'd be marginally more correct. But then 3 out of the last 17 champions having a defense outside if the top 10 is still in your face.

One could argue the offenses in the SEC West are of less of a caliber than found in the Big12 or PAC 12 so less emphasis on defense is needed...

This is the last time I'll roast you because I have to go to Walmart before the wife gets home:

The last time we had a top 10 defense we went 6-6. The last time we had a top 10 offense we went 10-2...

Good points, and the best argument I've heard yet. I haven't seen Norvell's teams in action, but the general apathy toward defense by a lot of spread guys befuddles me. The fact that Memphis is at present #5 on offense, and #112 on defense speaks to that, and should raise red flags for anyone, given the facts presented.

It is an absolute no brainier that unless Norvell can build a MUCH MUCH better defense here, he would be eaten alive in the SEC.

What do you think the chances are that the top 10 offenses from 2016 to 2014 had a better W/L record than the top 10 defenses I've already posted?

I'll do that work too, and if it's better, I'll quit the thread, ok?

Also #7 in forced turnovers. LINK

That is the name of the game defensively in 2017.

Create pressure, havoc and get the ball to give the offense opportunities to score.

Why don't you compare win loss records using offense and defense rankings AT ARKANSAS.

I just wouldn't waste my time with Stonehog. He is being deliberately obtuse. Surely he isn't stupid enough to not know what a statistical outlier is.

I mean the numbers are crystal frickin clear.

Some folks just want the guy they want no matter what and you couldn't possibly convince them otherwise.

I'll do that. Frankly it's a little tiring coming with facts that are just ignored.

It was closer than I thought, but again, the numbers don't lie. Again, every metric supports an emphasis on defense.

Top 10 offenses from 2016 to 2014 had a combined W/L of 9.16/4.0

Would you say Petrino's success with a defense-optional approach was a statistical outlier?

The example I provided in the OP of scoring 31 points against Alabama

That only happened once. You're cherry picking with that. We scored 9 points vs Bama this past season. The defense was on the field for most of the game.

2013 52-0
2014 14-13
2015 27-14
2016 49-30
2017 41-9

That's the scores vs Bama under Bert. 66 points in 5 games. Like I said, our offense was only good against teams with bad defenses. We need to load up on skill players.

Nonsense.
In 2014 we left 7 on the field which would have also been enough to beat Bama.

We need a better defense.

This is a great point, Norvell by default is going to be putting more pressure on his defense with his scheme as oppose to running a pro-style or run heavy scheme. One way to remedy this is playing aggressive on defense and getting takeaways. It is great to see this stat.

Speaking of 2014, in 2014 Arkansas averaged over 400 yards of offense per game. That is more than enough to win football games. Even in the SEC.

The problem under Bielema was defense, outside that one good year.

We need a better defense. Clearly. It was especially evident this season.

We need to sell the farm to get the best defense we possibly can.

Norvell has one of the worst defenses in all of college football. If Arkansas already struggles to field a good defense, Norvell will be a disaster.

Ok, has nothing to do with what I said

I get it, you don't want Norvell
