Very interesting thread that we all already know except the Arkansas admin. Pittman's 2021 contract actually may be worse than Bert's or Chad's and Hunter is 100% to blame.

I’m not overly familiar with Pittmans contract. Is this indicating that his buyout won’t drop next year regardless? Due to an automatic extension?
I was aware of his record being at .500 or better meant a higher buyout this year. Assumed it would drop next year.

This sounded great after we were going 2-10 but five years later seems like it’s put us in purgatory

There's a reason all Pittman cares about is getting to 6-6 and a bowl game. He gets an auto extension that way, and he won't go under .500 and if he does that every year, his buyout also remains high.
If he had not won Aub or Tenn, he would have already been fired when the buyout dropped to $5M. Now. To get that $5M figure again. It will have to be after next season (or unless he starts horrifically next year, which could happen).
Regardless, this is going to be the lightest P4 coaching cycle probably a decade or more and they are going to shite the bed and squander it. And next year will be filled with vacancies. It's simply the Arkansas cycle of suck.
Hunter should be canned over that contract. In trying to outsmart the system. He played himself...

I still don't understand the contract from our side. Why would you not just give him huge incentives to win on top of his smaller buyout and move down the road. We didn't have to offer him anything in the first place

Yeah Pittman's best year was with 6th year guys and Treylon Burks. Yuracheck screwed the pooch by giving him a big contract.
Much like Long did for Bielema after the Texas bowl. So dumb, I swear this football program is cursed

Came to post this, it’s all true. Should just be fired and be done with it. Do it before he gets back to 500

Everything I remember about it, is if he is over 500 it’s like 75% of the contract, and if it dips below it’s like 50% of the contract he is owed.

Pittman had no leverage, who was going to poach a 60 year old OL coach with no prior head coaching experience that had an average season?
No one and Jimmy Sexton got the better of the Arkansas brass once again.

Just negotiate a retirement deal.
Pittman doesn’t even act like he has the fire to coach anymore.
Hunter put us in the mess, botched the Kiffin hire and gave Sam a completely unnecessary extension.

It wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't for these stupid contracts.
Sam Pittman is the real winner here. He can lose out, get fired and will get his money. He can go 6-6 or 7-5 and he will get an extension, a raise. So he could end up the richest 6-6/7-5 coach in America.

Currently, Pittman is 25-23 since 2021. That's the number to look at for below 500 status, not his overall.
He will likely finish 26-24. If he wins some toilet Liberty Bowl, he will be 27-24.the big part of that though, is that he gets a 1 yr extension (base salary of $5M) so his deal would stretch back to 2028 (It's currently at 2027 because he won that Kansas Liberty Bowl and finished 7-5, triggering a 1-yr add-on).
He is owed 75% of his remaining salary if he is fired, that would make his buyout jump back $15 MILLION even if he goes 5-7 next year. He would have to go 4-8 for it to even jump back down to $10M, where it currently is now, and 3-9 to get it back to $5M.
I had no idea it was this bad until looking at the deal. They are so fricked. No wonder Pittman doesnt want to retire and can essentially hold the university hostage unless they can him after Mizzou.
Basically, if he does just enough to get to a bowl game every year and pull off in the Liberty or Birmingham Bowl, his contract basically never ends.
They have to pull the bandaid off right now, or they could possibly owe him just as much next year. It's absolutely nuts.

I’ve said this before, but we’re stomping on our own dicks if we don’t fire Pittman this year because in all likelihood next season Oklahoma, Auburn, and Florida could all be looking for a coach, and that’s not including any vacancies that happen in other conferences.

Amen.
An AD has 2 jobs — hiring good coaches and raising money. Hunter sucks at both of them because we have a bad football coach but somehow can’t afford to fire him.

Not very smart and not business savvy at all.

He can’t fire him because he gave him a Saban contract. No reason to auto extend unless you got a coach you never want to get rid of. Just a dumb as frick move like I said when it happened. You let the fatty walk.

Hunter has no charisma at all. Frank Broyles was many things but he certainly was better at doing business and had the charisma to reel in all razorback supporters from rich to poor.
His begging back in September came off as weak and pathetic.
But he is just the symptom and not the disease.

This is wrong. The automatic one-year extension for winning 7 games is only able to be activated one time, and he already used it when they beat Kansas to get to 7 wins in 2022.

Arkansas should have been a lot tougher with Sexton and tell him saying look Pittman had a good year but it doesn't warrant the incentives that you are asking, we need to see a bit more progress.
Sexton will lie and say that his phone keeps getting calls and text messages regarding Pittman getting job offers around the nation. If you could agree to this contract and Sam won't get poached.
They should have said no and my insiders tell us this is false information and if you don't agree to our demands then Sam Pittman is free to walk.

No one was looking to hire him for $4m a year. No one wanted him as a head coach. And no one is paying a position coach that much.
