Update at Arkansas

quote:

Sources tell FootballScoop that Arkansas has met with Memphis head coach Mike Norvell. At this time Norvell is said to be more interested in the opening at Florida State than Arkansas; however we wouldn’t rule Norvell out of this one just yet. Norvell, at just 38 years old, is 35-15 at Memphis and has the Tigers at 9-1 and ranked No. 17 in the country, in position for a prestigious New Year’s Six bowl berth with three more wins to close the regular season. That success, plus a buyout at around $500,000, has the former Central Arkansas as one of the most coveted coaching targets this winter.

Additionally, sources said a Gus Malzahn reunion is not expected to happen. The famed former ultra-successful Arkansas high school coach and former Hogs offensive coordinator was heavily pursued by Arkansas in 2017, but he elected to remain at Auburn with a 7-year, $49 million contract. Word within the coaching profession is that Malzahn is not interested in using Arkansas as an exit ramp out of Auburn in what can fairly be described as a tenuous situation on the Plains.

The whisper within the profession is that Arkansas has met with another candidate already and is expected to meet with others in the coming week. It will be interesting to see if the Hogs make a trip to visit with Hugh Freeze who many coaches believe could step in a right the ship quickly.

Arkansas’ regular season closes Nov. 29 against Missouri, and the school is moving swiftly to have the next head Hog in place quickly after that.

Couldn’t go wrong with either Norvell or Freeze. That gives me more confidence than what we were hearing yesterday from the local folks.

Still doesn’t sound like we get past Norvell or Kiffin, IMO.

FSU got the jump, other schools also contacting Norvell. He’s gonna get paid somewhere this year.

Not a fan of freeze. He cheated, got talent at ole miss that they’d never had before and still the best he could manage was a 9 win season and still lost to bert multiple times. Is he better than chad? Yes l, but that’s not saying much and I believe there’s 4 or 5 coaches out there better than him who we could get

He went 10-3 and won the Sugar Bowl the year of the 4th and 25 game. Honestly not really his fault they lost that game, that was a once in a lifetime type play lol.

He's not high on my list, but I could live with Freeze if we whiff on some other folks. Just get him a pass to Bottoms Up and keep him busy.

I'm told that this Football Scoop update on Gus is dated. Supposedly he's changed his tune in the last few days after getting word from his agent that options other than Arkansas may not be there for him. Question is, does Arkansas still want him after that deal two years ago?

Mike, Shut up.

The wording of that alone, should be enough that we never, ever allow Gus to bus in here.

Lordy Mercy!

You cant make this stuff up, it is too blatantly stupid.

Yeah I'm ok with Freeze tbh. He'll get us to at least respectable. He turned Liberty around in one year

Would think he’d come cheap(er) as a rehab project. Build in some strong performance bonuses and give him legit money for staff and DC. We would be light years ahead of what we’ve seen.

Frick Guz Malzhan and his wishy washy whats best for me ways.

Give me somebody who wants to walk away from their current job and come here, not because they are on the verge of getting canned.

If we are going to hire a cheater, wouldn't we be smart to hire a good one? You know, one that doesn't get caught?

I'd rather bring back Morris (spit) that bring in a bible quoting, caught cheating, Ole Miss retread.

Alright, I take that back. I would rather hire the coach of any of the 3A or above state champion high schools, than have Hugh Freeze on our sideline.

I'd probably just start ignoring Hog football, the way I have ignored Hog basketball for the last decade or two.

Sounds like Irwin has been getting played by Mustains mom again. That was the last time he trotted out such blatant stupidity.

As far as Gus goes, he would lose $20+ MILLION to walk away from the Aubbies. If his delicate ego can't take the heat for $20 million, then he is even more washed up than he appears, and sure as hell doesn't need to be here.

Fyi Malzhan buyout is reportedly $27 million currently. Say Auburn waves buyout to leave ($7 million and which they would no doubt love to do to be ride of him). No way Arkansas pays more than $4-4.5 million, certainly not $7 million. So that would mean Malzhan leaves $27 million at Auburn (if currently bought out by them) for a much lower paying job. While his ego is Houston Nutt sized, and doesn't seem to be nearly as smart as he thinks he is, I still don't believe he is that damn dumb and sensitive as to walk away from that buyout even if Arkansas wanted him. My guess is that its Sexton trying to create the appearance of demand trying to draw out the contract with Auburn for another year or two.

Now, if you think that is what's wrong with our fanbase.. I'm guessing you'd also be in favor of Art Briles on the sideline.

If so.. let me ask this. What's an acceptable rape to win ratio? How may extra rapes on campus would you allow if it meant 8 wins, 10 wins etc.
