First team - CB - Dwight McGlothern, LaDarrius Bishop S - Jalen Catalon, Latavious Brini, Nickel - Myles Slusher

Second team - CB - Hudson Clark, Malik Chavis, Trent Gordon at corner or Nickel, S - Simeon Blair, Malik Chavis or Myles Slusher Nickel - Jayden Johnson

Third team - CB - Khari Johnson, Keuan Parker S - true freshman Jaylen Lewis, true freshman Anthony Brown
Nickel - Jacorrei Turner

Four CB - Chase Lowery

Special teams guys from the secondary - McKinley Williams, Courtney Snelling, Drew Winn, Zach Zimos

Beyond that, a couple of true freshmen walkons we're all rooting for, John Paul Pickens and Landon Phipps

ETA: one report quoted Pittboss as saying Malik can play any position in the secondary, corner or safety or nickel.

Not sure if Penn State transfer Gordon came out of the blocks well at corner, or if it's just the lag of a reporting on new guys. He's reportedly a corner or nickel.

Myles Slusher can play safety or nickel.

Those guys leaving for LSU really hurt us. Rubs me the wrong way

I thought Brini was a safety. Did he work at corner during the spring?

Getting Catalon back helps a lot.

Think McGlothern is a CB too.

Hornsby will be in the WR group at least part-time, hopefully he can contribute

Not too worried about DB as a whole, WR and DL is what concerns me much more

slush was about to take foucha's spot (he ended up taking brooks spot, but go watch that lsu int and try and tell me that you think he isnt going to be a better player than brooks), and mcglothern is better than brooks. Brini is equal to foucha imo. so im ok with trading landon for him. one dude at SEC Media days said we lost that trade, but I whole sale disagree. I think the two we traded are not NFL material. the two we got will be before they leave. so im willing to trade 2 Good 1 year college guys, for 2 multi year future NFL prospects.

I was impressed by Slusher, I think he’ll be very good.

Based off the Penn State game, WR should be terrifying. Hopefully one of these new guys steps up and Thompson in the proud new owner of the stickiest gloves known to man.

Thompson will end up on the bench eventually, he gave up an easy interception in the bowl game.

The wide receivers just have to be good enough to keep the defenses somewhat honest. We're a power running team. Should be plenty of open lanes in the secondary.

Sam said he was pleased with how he and the staff were able to fill the holes in those positions.

They aren't high draft prospects. Probably in the 5-7 rounds or free agency. I don't see an upgrade or downgrade from these trades.

I was more concerned about Catalon leaving to the draft because he made the secondary so much better when he was playing.

I think you're right

he was a top corner coming out of HS so I didn't research enough that he'd become a safety (I think)

also McGlothern at corner instead of safety

also looks like Chavis has moved from safety to corner

I'm reworking the OP

yes sir, you are correct

Here's another reworked angle

So here’s our top 10 or 11 DB’s, for instance if we hypothetically had to go into a game with the same number of DB’s an NFL team has to with roster limits (D1 college travel squad is 70, and at home 80 can be eligible to play in a game, and you dress as many as you want)

Jalen Catalon – safety
Latavious Brini – safety
Myles Slusher – safety and nickel
LaDarrius Bishop – corner
Dwight McGlothern – corner
Malik Chavis – corner, and safety, and nickel
Simeon Blair – safety and could play nickel
Hudson Clark – corner, could probably fill in at nickel
Jayden Johnson – nickel, and probably safety
Trent Gordon – corner or nickel (or this guy could be left behind by incoming freshmen)
Jaylen Lewis – true freshman from Haywood County TN – he’s my pick as breakout FR in the secondary

This is pretty quality depth IMO.

A D1 team can travel 70 eligible players for a game, so maybe five more DB’s beyond this top 11 make the travel squad, if you figure in guys you could use on special teams. My guess is our DB depth is good enough that long-time squad guys McKinley Williams and Zach Zamos will not make the travel squads.

So here’s five more guys I’m guessing will travel with that top 11

Jacorrei Turner – redshirt soph nickel and safety
Anthony Brown – true freshman from Milan, Tennessee
Khari Johnson – Jr corner from Massachusetts
Chase Lowery – Redshirt FT corner
Keuan Parker – Redshirt FR corner

ETA: scratch that, I think we can only afford to travel 13 or less defensive backs, given the 70 player travel limit

I have no clue, I’m not a coach.

But it doesn’t seem like that many…

9DL would allow 3 Deep
9LB would allow 3 Deep
15DB/Safety would be 3 deep..
